“A wonderful peace of earth.”
Reviewed 2 June 2011

We really enjoyed our stay at Olive Garden Country Lodge. It was definetly one of our highlights during our holidays in South Africa. Ferdinand was a wonderful host and pampered us the best way possible to make our stay comfortable. We can recommend Olive Garden Country Lodge to all appreciating a wonderful landscape, very nice accomodations and especially to all loving good wine and food. Thank you very much.

Although Gina and Fernand were not there (dentist appointment in Cape Town) we were met and attended to by Terry who settled us in. As soon as Gina arrived she came to our room with a welcoming glass of wine and snacks. She immediately made us feel right at home and was very helpful in organizing our activities for our two night stay. The guest house has a lovely setting in a surrounding olive grove. Gina and Fernand produce an excellent olive oil there. The rooms were clean and well appointed. My husband enjoyed the hiking path up the mountain directly from their property. The best part was the food. The breakfast was a gourmet delight with all the trimmings. We ate dinner there both nights. Fernand is a wonderful cook and Gina made sure that we had a delightful time. Since the menu is limited I am sure that if you let them know ahead of time of any dietary restraints they would be more than willing to accommodate you. Very relaxing time. We hope to return on our next trip to South Africa.

It took two stressed out city slickers two hours to get to Olive Garden and it was so worth it. We drove in through the gate and Gina had already started walking down the garden path with a tray with two glasses of wine and snacks on it ready to welcome us. We hadn't even pressed the bell but she knew we were there! Magic. The room was like a suite, really, with a huge jacuzzi (didn't have the time to even test it, sorry) and an amazing shower the like of which I'd never seen (made of solid stone and with funny spouts of water popping out everywhere which kept me amused and clean). There was no air con which was a) brilliant to see and b) unnecessary. The quality of things like the sliding door, the coffee in the room and the TV was really top notch, certainly not what I expected from a rural retreat.
After our glass of wine listening to the sounds of the bush around us as evening fell, we strolled across the garden (lovely, indigenous and tended to exactly the right degree) to supper. This was again a treat: a set menu of superbly cooked steak and very nice Arabella Voignier, which I wasn't familiar with but a good pairing none the less. I could have done with a dessert but we were a very long way away from anywhere so that could certainly be forgiven.
After a few more glasses of wine (!) we 'walked' back to our room and fell very fast asleep. Next morning's breakfast was a treat too: fruit served in a tall glass with lovely coffee and home baked bread served in a wicker basket to the table, accompanied by three types of homemade fruit jam. Beat that. Then, to top it all off, a wonderful ramikin-baked egg and bacon wrapped in brown toast. Really most memorable.
The only downside? We had one night and had to leave. We'll be back.

We had a wonderful 2 day stay at this really special and unique place.
Gina and Fernand are a delight and so natural and very welcoming. The accommodation is quirky, charming and comfortable. The setting in the foothills of the Kranskop Range is beautiful and very peaceful with great hikes/walks in and up the mountains. The "cherry on top" (excuse he pun) is the exceptional cuisine perfectly and caringly prepared by Fernand and proudly and pleasantly served by charming Gina. Altogether a weekend we shall always fondly remember! Carol & Peter Knysna

Wonderful scenery, fabulous views. We unfortunately only had one night here, wished we could have stayed longer. Room was in the pretty gardens and was private, comfortable clean and spacious with a shaded verandah to relax on after a days sightseeing. Welcoming drinks and nibbles served on our verandah by our hosts at 7pm - a lovely thing to do. Great dinner and breakfast too. We would love to come back to this peaceful place again.

The personal attention at Olive Garden was what stood out for me this weekend. The hosts are very friendly and accommodating; one could really see they wanted us to enjoy ourselves. The setting is beautiful and quiet, ideal for a romantic weekend away. Swimming pool, jacuzzi, hiking trail etc. all contribute to this being a very special place.
Thanks Gina and Fernand!

The couple were very unfriendly and unwelcoming. We arrived just after midday and were made to feel very uncomfortable about 'arriving so early'. Views massively disappointing, rooms comfortable with good facilities but decor odd (ie western-style swing doors to bathroom so you can see/hear your mate on the loo while in the room). Also very expensive for the facilities and smelt of dog poo. Went for supper around the corner at Fraai Uitzicht where the host was charming, location much better and we were welcomed warmly and given delicious food.
