We stayed here for 2 nights as our choice for the "luxury" part of our week trekking in the area and were not disappointed. There is no need to explore anywhere else for food (as my partner says "you are remiss if you go anywhere else"), when you have Ferdinand to cook meals for you! We thoroughly enjoyed every meal that we had - even breakfast is a gastronomic delight - looking over the gardens and nearby mountains. Both Gina and Ferdinand are very attentive hosts, but do not overwhelm you, and their Belgian heritage brings a continental feel to their exquisite cooking. We enjoyed their wine paring choices with our 3-course dinner, that was superb, and filled you perfectly. As South Africans ourselves, we loved their passion for our country, and commitment to caring for the earth through organic farming and care for the land.
We were treated to the "honeymoon" cottage, and even thought most of the decor is not our taste, it was comfortable, spacious and all the extras provided. We liked the bathroom with its stone clad walls, and fantastic large bath with jets. The bed was large and had percale linen. The little patio outside was private and provided beautiful views of the surrounding farm, well tended gardens, and backed by the mountains of the area.
When it rained, Gina brought us an umbrella to the cottage. When we talked about going for a walk, we were given walking sticks. When we asked about olive farming, all the details were explained, even down to how they are choosing their packaging. When we asked what we could do in our short visit, we were introduced to local spots to visit and support.
If you enjoy walking or hiking this is the spot for you. And, if you enjoy just being lazy, take your pick of hanging out by the exclusive little swimming pool, or indulging in a jacuzzi, or finding a spot in the pretty gardens with a blanket and your favourite book - all the while enjoying the bray of a distant donkey, or moo from the local cows.
Even though the lodge is out of Robertson and other areas, it is still close enough for day trips, or pop out to local wine farms if you feel that you want to explore the surrounds. Easy access, good roads.
Do not leave without spoiling yourself with the balsamic vinegar and olive oil gift pack!
