Olive Garden Country Lodge
Reviewed 28 January 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights as our choice for the "luxury" part of our week trekking in the area and were not disappointed. There is no need to explore anywhere else for food (as my partner says "you are remiss if you go anywhere else"), when you have Ferdinand to cook meals for you! We thoroughly enjoyed every meal that we had - even breakfast is a gastronomic delight - looking over the gardens and nearby mountains. Both Gina and Ferdinand are very attentive hosts, but do not overwhelm you, and their Belgian heritage brings a continental feel to their exquisite cooking. We enjoyed their wine paring choices with our 3-course dinner, that was superb, and filled you perfectly. As South Africans ourselves, we loved their passion for our country, and commitment to caring for the earth through organic farming and care for the land.

We were treated to the "honeymoon" cottage, and even thought most of the decor is not our taste, it was comfortable, spacious and all the extras provided. We liked the bathroom with its stone clad walls, and fantastic large bath with jets. The bed was large and had percale linen. The little patio outside was private and provided beautiful views of the surrounding farm, well tended gardens, and backed by the mountains of the area.

When it rained, Gina brought us an umbrella to the cottage. When we talked about going for a walk, we were given walking sticks. When we asked about olive farming, all the details were explained, even down to how they are choosing their packaging. When we asked what we could do in our short visit, we were introduced to local spots to visit and support.

If you enjoy walking or hiking this is the spot for you. And, if you enjoy just being lazy, take your pick of hanging out by the exclusive little swimming pool, or indulging in a jacuzzi, or finding a spot in the pretty gardens with a blanket and your favourite book - all the while enjoying the bray of a distant donkey, or moo from the local cows.

Even though the lodge is out of Robertson and other areas, it is still close enough for day trips, or pop out to local wine farms if you feel that you want to explore the surrounds. Easy access, good roads.

Do not leave without spoiling yourself with the balsamic vinegar and olive oil gift pack!

Room Tip: All cottages are individual, with their own little patio, and even though we did not see into them...

Host and hostess - great.
Location - great.
Wildlife - great.
Accommodation - great.
Food - great.

What more can I say, we were welcomed by Gina and Ferdinand right from arriving and thoroughly looked after. This is a quality rustic escape in a "biodynamic" context where they care about the earth and not only are great hosts but also produce great olive oil from their organic small holding. They helped us explore the Breed river valley as they know it too well.
We would definitely go back.

My wife and I stayed at the lodge for three nights during our first trip to South-Africa. The combination of the wonderful scenery and the enthousiastic hospitality of our hosts, Gina and Fernand, made it a magnificent experience.
We stayed at the beautiful "honeymoon cottage" and thus enjoyed all its luxury in this rural environment. The cosy restaurant and Fernands splendid cooking with natural, home made products in combination with the hospitality of the couple made us feel at home from the first minute.
We will never forget the enthousiasm and the wonderful "home-made" olive-oil. Gina and Fernand made us remember never to give up our dreams...thank you for this experience...and believe me, it was very hard to say goodbye allthough I'm quite sure we'll see each other again...

The beauty of the Robertson mountains and the smell of fynbos combined with the hospitality and friendliness of Gina and Fernand made our engagement weekend at Olive Garden unforgettable. It is definitely a destination that I will recommend to all who enjoy quality food, beautiful and cosy rooms/cottages but most of all the serenity of raw nature which is also cherished by both Gina and Fernand.

Fendand took us for a tour through his olive oil making process, we went mountain biking and hiking, enjoyed fabulous food and wine and also the cosiness of a fire place in our room.

I am looking forward to my next trip to the Olive Garden

Although Gina and Fernand were not there (dentist appointment in Cape Town) we were met and attended to by Terry who settled us in. As soon as Gina arrived she came to our room with a welcoming glass of wine and snacks. She immediately made us feel right at home and was very helpful in organizing our activities for our two night stay. The guest house has a lovely setting in a surrounding olive grove. Gina and Fernand produce an excellent olive oil there. The rooms were clean and well appointed. My husband enjoyed the hiking path up the mountain directly from their property. The best part was the food. The breakfast was a gourmet delight with all the trimmings. We ate dinner there both nights. Fernand is a wonderful cook and Gina made sure that we had a delightful time. Since the menu is limited I am sure that if you let them know ahead of time of any dietary restraints they would be more than willing to accommodate you. Very relaxing time. We hope to return on our next trip to South Africa.
