“Great great great!”
Reviewed 1 September 2010

Probably the best guesthouse in the area. It is stylish, decor is fantastic and service great. The spa is probably the best - best massages ever.

You might be forgiven for missing SW1 in the directories.

You may even be forgiven for driving straight past it, in what is extensively a Residential Area, the streetname is actually shown as various combinations of Elsenham "avenue" "street" "crescent" etc. - nevertheless the TomTom had the right one

But you would never forgive yourself for not staying there !

The place has individually decorated rooms and suites that are very luxurious. The beds are large, comfortable and well positioned in the rooms to allow you to watch the TV/ / Satellite / DVD until you drift off, or look out into the gardens.

The showers offer vast walk-in areas with deluge heads and wall mounted nozzles for that all-over pummelled effect (if you so desire).

We were welcomed to the property and shown around - as I remember; saying "wow" a lot - the massive lounge area with an open view with the sea in the distance and bar area and study (with good quality Internet access) and left to explore the gardens and pool area at out leisure.

Simon the Manager couldn't do enough for us, without being over the top, continually checking if we had everything we needed or required any local information. Simon's mobile number is left in the room - just in case we needed something at 3am. They even managed to track down our relatives in the area through the local phone book and a fair few phone calls!

The property is very well positioned to get to and from the main N2 (about 2km and 3 turns from the main SW Mall and N2 interchange) to the Wine Vinyards, Strand Beach, Hermanus and even Cape Town (and particularly Cape Town International) is not that far away.

Once you are off the street you start to appreciate how large the plot is, it is very secluded and offers an oasis of tranquility.

The property seems very secure with high walls and a sliding main electric gate from the extensive offroad parking to the street (which guests receive a remote control for), CCTV and a security guard.

Although the Breakfast was not quite as extensive as other places we stayed, you would certainly not turn your nose up at it. To be honest the breakfast and the Internet Access beig a bit flakey in the rooms were the only things I could find that offered any room for improvement.

Unfortunately we didn't get time to chill by the pool or visit the SPA for a treatment as we were off here, there and everywhere.

The building and environs seem quite friendly to anybody with walking difficulties, with both ramps and steps.

  • Liked — The whole understated luxury of the place
  • Disliked — Internet Access didn't work reliably in the rooms

I hardly dare tell you all about SW1, but in the spirit of Tripadvisor, I thought I would share the secret.

SW1 is a 'Luxury Guest Retreat' and really is that.

The property is on a hilside with views to Cape Point. It is really beautifully decorated as the owners must have exceptionally good taste - it looks like a lot of time, effort and love has gone into creating SW1 and we had an amazing stay.

Our room was really stunning, all the pictures on the website are a true reflection of the rooms (I had a nosey around quite a few of them!) The bathrooms are large and spacious, with soft fluffy towels and luxurious shower gel, hand wash etc. Our room opened to a beautiful garden with tables and chairs. There is also a great pool with sun loungers.

There is also a covered lounge area with squishy leather sofas, fabulous cushions, great books - perfect for watching the sun go down.

The Manager, Simon is a complete star, he collected us from the airport, made us reservations at a nearby recommended restaurant (which was excellent) and also took us there too! He really understands what his guests need and nothing is too much trouble.

SW1 would make a perfect base for your trip to Cape Town as it's an easy journey into the City as well as being near to the winelands, beaches etc.

It doesn't seem as though SW1 and Tripadvisor have found each other until now - but don't let that put you off. If you're looking for a luxurious stay in the Cape Town area, then SW1 is for you. We would definitely say it was the best place we stayed in South Africa. Enjoy !

  • Liked — The stunning decor and fabulous management!
  • Disliked — Having to leave so quickly...would have loved to stayed longer but feared I may never have left!
