Mooring House

Poor service and follow up. We booked accommodation through the website and over the phone, gave our credit card details by email. Something went wrong with the credit card, and the owners just cancelled, without informing us - we called a few days ahead and got fobbed off with an email telling us they thought the reservation was made "obsolete". No apologies, no follow up and no assistance in looking for alternatives - a real let-down and disappointment.

We agree with all the other reviews that this has been the happiest and friendliest place we have stayed in South Africa. Gary and Miriam made us welcome from the moment we arrived. We could not buy wine on a Sunday so Miriam gave us a bottle. Gary came over later to say it was not good enough for us and gave us another bottle. We were going out to the excellent Thai restaurant ten minutes walk away but Miriam insisted on making toasted sandwiches which we had round the pool. The accommodation was excellent with a good sitting room, galley kitchen and very comfortable double bed. Breakfast was served either by the pool, in the breakfast room or on a table outside your room. They are both keen golfers and we played with them the following day. We then went to the Thai restaurant with them and had a good meal.

I would have no hesitation in recommended Mooring House to anyone and I am sure we will go back some day.

Room Tip: Tell them John and Wendy sent you and you might get and extra egg for breakfast or something else.

We were three people staying at Mooring House and it exceeded every expectation. As employees of a charitable organisation, we have to search far and wide to find such a great find as Mooring House. We all had seperate spacious beautifully decorated rooms, but could sit and work together due to the lounge area in the one section. The breakfast was delicious! The price was beyond compare! And the garden is peaceful and absolutely gorgeous! The whole experience was fantastic! We often travel for work and our last trip to Somerset West was a very different experience. Mooring House has however redeemed the area and guest houses in general for us. We have found our "go-to" in the area and highly recommend it! Thank you!

We were 2 couples. We stayed at Mooring House for 2 weeks in January 2012. We loved the accommodation (2 self-catering garden-facing rooms, spacious with all your need). The garden was great and very beautiful with different areas to sit and relax or take a swim in the pool. A typical South African Braie evening was organised by Garry and his wife Miriam. We should like to thank them for their hospitality. We have been to South Africa several times before but found this guest house by far the best we have had. We hope to return!

Staying at the Mooring House was more than the cherry on the top and made our whole visit to Somerset West a very special one. A dreamy garden and Garry, Miriam and family we really hope to see again.

Well located close to Somerset West, Cape Town, airport and The Strand. Amazing views of the Helderburg and great opportunity for a brisk evening walk up the slopes of the mountain to be rewarded with wonderful views over False Bay and surrounding mountains. Everything you need in the apartments so great for Self Catering. Very welcoming, helpful and knowledgable hosts.
Watch out for the spiders (if you leave the garden windows open). A bit scary, but easily removed with a broom! Don't let this put you off (character forming!).
If you need to work - wireless internet connectivity (good signal) is provided free of charge.

Rain spiders (or proper term being the African Huntsman Spider) appears extremely scary to those who do not like spiders, but they are actually not aggressive and will not bite unless they feel threatened or provoked but are certainly not deadly to humans. They get their name from fear of the rain and seek shelter a day or two before a rain shower – unfortunately on occasions, in one or other guest room where the windows have been left open and then stay in a corner on the ceiling.

I know they are not the most pleasant of slights especially when you climb into bed at night and look up the ceiling and there staring back at you is this rather large spider – enough to put anyone off their sleep, but please do not kill them as they are considered beneficial because they feed on insects. So if summons by a guests because of this looming threat inside there room I simply take a broom, nudge them to the floor where they will curl up into a little ball and then gently sweep them outside – away from harms way.

Prevention. Unfortunately you will find them in most places where you stay but simply : shut your windows prior to a rain storm and you will have an unthreatened and peaceful nights sleep.
