I stayed at the Molen Guest House for 5 days and had a very pleasant stay.
The staf was friendly, helpful and made me feel very welcome. The rooms are clean, beds comfortable and Wifi is available over the entire property. Breakfast simple but complete with eggs, nice rolls, muesli, fruit and yogurt.
The pool is small but has the look and feel of the Maldives...

Without a rental car this location is a bit difficult but the friendly staff will sort you out with cabs or drivers..

I had barely got my feet into the reception area when I was affronted with a verbal bill. There was no record of my deposit either. When we got to the room the view and the room looked lovely but I could smell something not so good in the bathroom to find the large bin had not been cleaned out. The tea, milk or sugar had not been replenished. The duvet was too small for the king size bed. We had to ask for a king size duvet. There were no bath robes. The cupboard hanging area is inadequate. The hanging space only accommodates one item to hang in each of the hanging cupboards. The Tourism Grading Council stipulates that : Provision of adequate hanging space to accommodate full length clothing. This should also accommodate for additional pillows, blankets, etc. Two lights not working and were not replaced. The television has 3 foreign channels, SABC 1,2 and 3 and MNET (should you want sport you have to ask for it to be switched over) 4 Star according to the Tourism Grading Council stipulates that : A functional remote controlled flat screen colour television with multi-channels (minimum 12 channels) to be provided in each room e.g. DSTV / TOPTV etc. ? The extractor fan not working - no one on site to fix it. Toilet water does not flush the whole bowl so we hd to pour water over the bowl to clean it and stop it from smelling. No toilet spray. No soap. The material serviettes aare threadbare or stained. Margarine was served and when I asked for butter there was none. I asked for strawberry jam but there was none. I asked for honey and the ‘waitress’ cum ‘cleaner’ cum ‘receptionist’ had to go for a walk outside to get it. Wherever that was. The clattering of pots and pans in the kitchen and staff talking while we were trying to eat is not acceptable. Our room was only being cleaned at 4pm the one day. Definitely will never stay or recommened de Molen. No invoice could be produced when we paid. If we had checked out because we were unhappy we would have had to pay the full amount of the days booked so we were prisoners in that place. When we said we did not feel it was fair to pay the full amount they locked the gates until we were forced to pay and would not negotiate a reasonable rate as we did not have experience 4 star accommodation or service or breakfast!

We stayed for four nights in the one bed, self-catering cottage and had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

On the positive side, the cottage is quaint and simple but easily covered our needs for the stay and really private, there is a braai and lovely terrace. The views are stunning and the location is very peaceful and quiet. Really lovely staff, who couldn't do enough to help.

On the negative side, the decor and fittings in the cottage were a bit tired and shabby. We had a delicious breakfasts for the first two nights, with fresh fruit salad and freshly cooked eggs and bacon, but the last two were much more basic with the cooked breakfast left in food warmers.

Although attention needs to be given in a couple of areas, we would thoroughly recommend De Molen.

De Molen is located in the most amazing grounds. The property is stunning, beautifully decorated albeit a little tired in places. Our room was comfortable and clean with plenty of hot water for a shower. A curtain or frosted glass would have been nice in the door between the bedroom and bathroom. I would definitely stay here again.

I was really wanting to stay in Stellenbosch as my son is studying there, however, rates are very expensive. I was lucky enough to find this deal with De Molen and with a little extra travelling it was well worth it. The Staff in particular made us feel very welcome.

De Molen is a Dutch owned and operated guesthouse right beneath the Helderberg. Very quiet and because of the altitude almost (flying) insect free. Stunning views from your balcony on either Gordons Bay or de Helderberg. Friendly and informal staff who let one thing an another slip sometimes. Cooked breakfast on order was the best. Nice and good restaurants nearby (3-5 km)
Problems with the internet were immediately dealt with. Rooms are small to spacious with small or (very) large balconies. Small an nicely hidden pool to cool down. Nice morning talks with the owners. No elevator.

Room Tip: Choose the rooms on the front (eg. nr 5) lovely views!

At the start we have been a little disappointed not to be welcomed personally by the owners as we have expirienced during our longer trip in SA. At least we extended our stay by 1 week!! That tells more than necessary.
A very comfortable place for golfers, due to fast excess to most of the cources being around. Friendly and helpful hosts at any requirement we had. Rooms are quite big, furniture with historical touch.
German TV ARD&ZDF available.
Breakfast buffet could be a bit more flexible, but if you have a wish, it will be done.
