“Lovely place to stop and stay”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

We booked at the very last minute and were pleased we did! Dave and Amanda were great hosts and were really helpful in planning the next stage of our drive. We stayed in the Leopard room which had been fully themed! We even had a fluffy leopard on the bed to greet us. Breakfast was lovely with home made jams and even some freshly made fried bread. A real good find.

My partner and I decided to have a stop over at Impangele to break up the journey on our way to the Garden route and we are so glad that we did. Amanda and Dave the owners are very friendly and relaxed and obviously take great pride in what they do and this shows in their charming house and indeed in our room. The leopard room was large, tastefully furnished and had lots of pleasant little surprises. I particularly enjoyed the outside stoep and the breakfast area which made for lots of enjoyable and relaxing breaks. Our bathroom had a rustic feel to it and was modern and well equipped and had great bathroom products.

The breakfast area was a haven for birds and we watched the double collared sun birds as we had our lovely and plentiful breakfast. Our hosts also kindly invited us to "help yourselves to our private bar" which says a little bit about the kindness and generosity of these ex Londoners. (St Albans to be precise. )

We were recommended a place for dinner which turned out to be lovely and just what we felt like and which also showed us some more of the easy-going Swellendam charm.

There was so much more to see and do in Swellendam than we thought and it was also really nice to see how community minded Amanda is and to see her involvement with the area's tourism as well as her own establishment and her staff. If you decide to visit and I recommend that you do then be sure to add to the "skatkis" and to read the guest info folder, it brought a smile to my face which probably sums up our entire visit. If you are thinking of stopping over in Swellendam then this is the place to do it!

Likes: Nice personal touches like biscuit in the room. A generous drinks tray and some liquors to sample and the friendly and relaxed atmosphere and the knowledgable and unobtrusive hosts. Quirky and interesting items in the bedrooms.

Dislikes: The fact that we only stayed for one night.

Oh and if you are in the area and have children with you then be sure to ask Amanda about the Fairy house down the road, it's unusual and a bit too"hippy" for me but it's great for kids and the free spirited.

A one-night stopover down the Garden Route from CT found us staying with Dave and Amanda at their delightful B&B, in the Leopard room with our son in the Giraffe room. After the driving, it was great to sit on the verandah with a drink to chat and watch the birds flitting to the water feeders. Good advice on all the local restaurants for dinner. Sadly, the weather turned overnight so we had breakfast inside but no matter, it probably has the vote of the best of the holiday ( we didn't have any bad ones and nearly all were very very good). Especially Amanda's deadly nightshade jam which went down a treat. They are clearly working hard to build up the business and the styling of the rooms works very well with all the little touches that one needs, especially samples of the local Wildebraam liqueurs - well worth the short drive up the road. Clean and comfortable, great hospitality, friendly service, good value. Would happily stay again.

For us it was a stopover on our way to Cape Town. I wish we had spent more time there, as Swellendam appears to be the "Clarence of the Western Cape". The B&B was comfortable and clean with basic amenities. We were upgraded from a room to the self catering cottage as they were full. We were asked in advance, which I appreciated. The owners go out of their way to make you comfortable, and ask that you let them know if there is something you are not happy about. There are loads of different restaurants within walking distance, and the B&B has a beautifully set out file with all the restaurants, examples of some menus, and comments from the owners about their general opinion of the restaurant e.g. "on the more expensive side, but we have never had a bad meal there". We were forewarned by the lady of the house that there was a juvenile Boomslang ( direct translation-tree snake ) in the ornamental grape vine above our breakfast table. As I am from Africa, that didn't bother me. If you leave it alone, it will leave you alone. As we finished our delicious breakfast, a very competent LADY snake catcher arrived, boxed it, and took it off to a more deserted location. What more could you ask for? A good night's sleep, a scrumptious breakfast, a bit of excitement with the wildlife and we were on our way to Cape Town. I will try to download a picture of the lady in action. Here's hoping!

I stayed at Impagele with my wife for two nights in the Zebra room. The room was really nicely decorated with every detail having fun Zebra and African accents. The bed was very comfortable, the room and guest house were very clean. The bathroom had very nice towels and designer brand soaps. For breakfast, there is a good selection of fresh fruits, cereals coffee and tea, and since the hosts Dave and Amanda are English you can also expect a full compliment of warm breakfast items.

The location is very nice. It is located just off the main street in Swellendam, and easy walking distance to many restaurants and shops. The house has a beautiful garden and excellent views of the 'Langeberg' mountain. The garden has a 'braai' (grill) that can be used by guests. We actually stayed in one evening and grilled. Dave made it very easy for us to have a barbecue because he had wood, utensils and starting blocks to help give us the real South African experience.

The hosts are really very genuine and friendly people. They are very knowledgable about the area and were really able to help us with the planning of our activities, as we had some ideas, but nothing really planned. They gave us some great restaurant tips - we went to Sabine's, which I also will recommend. Throughout the whole stay they were very welcoming and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. For the price, location and quality I would highly recommend this guesthouse to anyone going to Swellendam - we really had a wonderful.

We stayed for one night whilst on a tour of the sourthern Cape but received one of the warmest welcomes of the many places we stayed during our trip. As it was a Sunday Amanda advised us that it would be better to book a restaurant. She suggested various options and then booked for us and it turned out to be the best meal of our holiday. Extensive breakfast in a lovely setting and we enjoyed their company so much it was difficult to leave. However we had to move on and followed their advice to visit Monkey Land and Birds of Eden which turned out to be a wonderful experience. All in all we couldn't have asked for any more.
