Owner description: This former government building, an architectural treasure in itself, is now a museum containing some impressive artifacts. Particularly noteworthy is a collection of late 18th and early 19th century Cape furniture.

“Fascinating buildings and history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

This was our first visit to Swellendam so we knew nothing of the history.
This compact collection of historic buildings is well laid out and tells you all you need to know about the past of this small town!
Go early as it gets a bit hot! You realise what tough pioneers the early residents were!
One thing that has stuck in our memories are floors made from peach stones! They seem to have worn well.

“Great historical building”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Swellendam being the 3rd oldest town in South Africa it is interesting to visit the whole reason for the towns existence in the first place. This is the 'Drostdy' that was built by the Dutch East India company in 1746-47 to house and act as official offices to the Landdrost (Magistrate) who handled legal matters in the area. I find the building style, informative history and late 18th/early 19th century Cape furniture extremely interesting.

“Great museum”

Lovely old buildings, not too much for our children to take in, and in a nice setting, with a restaurant in some of the buildings. Our children really enjoyed this place.

“a lesson in history”

the open air museum gives a good view of the life in the old days. The old houses (and gardens) are well kept and beautifully restaured. A visit here is a trip back in history

“Even learnt some Africaans”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2014

A very well planned and maintained folk museum built around houses of different periods in Swellendam and a variety of reconstructed industrial buildings from the 19th century.
The guides were very informative and only too happy to chat about the museum and their personal experiences, and also that of their families. We thought we would just pop in but managed to spend all of the morning, a great experience
