“Top of the bill”

September 2010 I stayed in The Kloof for three days, together with colleques. It is beautiful and authentic estate that sets the standard for all my South Africa experiences. Personel is very friendly. Breakfast and dinner were superb. I would recommend it to anyone travelling without kids. Young kids would not appreciate the luxury and probably "run" into some delicate art that lifts the atmosphere.

Room Tip: I had the loft above the attic, which was very nice. I liked the loft in the cottage the most, altho...

We stayed for 2 nights as part of our 12 day trip from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth.
The welcome we received including comp drinks was very positive though we were surprised to hear we would be sleeping on a waterbed. We didn't like it.

The bathroom was large and looked fab but the basins were set back too far to use easily, the rain shower just dribbled and took 10 minutes to warm up. The jacuzzi bath took 25 mins to fill.

The pool and views were fab but there was barely room to navigate the sun beds around the pool and there was no poolside service which was a pain when we were thirsty.

On the plus side breakfasts were very well presented and the staff were all very friendly and helpful.

With the benefit of hindsight we would not return to Swellendam as it did not seem worth the stop.

Room Tip: Avoid the manor room with the waterbed unless you like that sort of thing.

The travel agent did book this very popular Manor Suite with latest high -stabilized super king waterbed for guests. A waterbed contributes to an overall feel of well- being and is proven good for people with back/neck problems and in this case the knee problem of guest.

The waterbed was explained upon check-in to guest and they were excited to experience it. Hotel could have easily booked guests to another suite with xl bed mattress if guest had ventilated this.

Upon check in the receptionist always recommend to guests to explore the beautiful hotel grounds with several areas with great mountain views, secluded gardens, rose gardens lavender paths ,dams and koi ponds. Especially in summer guest can enjoy the several different located sitting areas and can order a drink or a meal.

According to the guest bill guests did enjoy on both days a lunch at their own private suite terrace as well drinks which were served at the pool.

The large pool area with a 12 meter pool with panoramic mountain views is designed in such way that it can be enjoyed for all times of day to enjoy morning and afternoon sun or the shade .
In this way there is no need to navigate with large sun loungers, umbrellas or furniture.

A staff member was asked to come and assist with the Jacuzzi bubble bath and noted that the swivel had been turned to the wrong way ,to cold instead of warm.

As the guest was unfortunately sick and in bed for the whole day, breakfast was served to their suite and a late checkout granted.

Hopefully we may welcome the guest back in good health to be able to explore the historical safe quaint village of Swellendam with Cape Dutch architecture buildings, shops & boutiques, many good restaurants. A great destination and base from where to explore the unspoilt Overberg region with its many nature parks, wineries and so much more to offer

This elegant boutique guesthouse lies in a secluded valley, surrounded by the majestic Langeberg Mountains, and is set on a historical estate. The manor house dates back to 1801 and is an outstanding example of Cape Dutch architecture.

We find the location excellent because it is within walking distance of the characterfull, historical center. To Bontebok National Park is approx. a 10 minutes drive.

We stayed 2 nights in room 2, one of the two deluxe garden suites with private terrace.
This room is a spacious retreat with attention to detail, thoughtful touches, decadent soft furnishings, modern necessities, a very comfortable bed with clean crisp sheets, and an ensuite bathroom to die for.
Room and bathroom were kept spotless.

Breakfast was served at our table and was very good, with fresh bake of the day.

The first night we were the only guests and therefore we decided to have diner in town at Field & Fork (however Marjolein was willing to prepare a diner for us), which was an excellent choice. We took the (only) taxi into town, and everything went smooth and safe.

The second night we dined in (tasting menu) and the diner was very good and tasty and the food was very well presented.
Before dinner we had a complimentary wine-tasting with other guests in the lovely lounge in the manor house.

Our experience: a hidden treasure, beautiful location, lush gardens, total tranquility, great atmosphere, warm hospitality and service, very friendly staff, personal attention, luxury and charming rooms, very good food and a high level of cleanliness.
And: Marjolein and Roy, the Dutch owners, are perfect hosts.

We stayed 3 nights at this excellent guest house - it has a lovely 8 acre garden, but is not on a wine estate - where the owners and staff could not do enough for their guests. Large swimming pool and good food. Bedrooms first rate.
Swellendam is a lovely small town with a historical centre worth spending a few hours in - do visit the museum. Also, just across the N2 is the Bontebok National Park where you may see those rare antelopes and also swim in the river if you wish.
If you want to break your journey on the N2, this is one of the best.

We stayed two nights en route from Franschoeck to Plettenberg. Our Dutch hosts couldn't have been more helpful even getting me a doctor's appointment to sort out my bronchitis. Well appointed suite with great his @ hers washbasins, bath and separate shower. Wonderful breakfasts with fresh fruit and eggs etc., cooked to order. We also dined in one night and had a very good meal. If you stay at De Kloof we strongly recommend the Italian restaurant La Sosta

This is a really welcoming and friendly Guest House, with all the staff very helpful. Here everyone is treated as if they are special and important to the staff and owners. UNfortunately my wife wasn't well while we were here, so we didn't make the most of the facilities. The food was top quality, very well prepared and presented. The only thing that we believe could have been better, was the room, it was a little dark, though it was old and in character with the rest of the estate, It was thatched, and all the fixtures fittings and toiletries etc were of a very high quality.

We stayed at De Kloof in early 2012. The grounds are extensive with various charming buildings which make up a farmstead atmosphere. Our room was large and thoughtfully decked out in a contemporty design and a modern luxury bathroom. The beds are comfortable and out sleep was brilliant as to was the hospitatlity offered by the team.
