“Wonderful stay - fantastic service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 November 2013

We stayed at De Kloof for the Coronation DC weekend as a team of 12. We were greeted on arrival by warm, friendly staff which included the owner herself. The staff on duty, Keith and Marjolien were super accommodative and friendly. They changed the morning meal times to suit our requirements...... Which meant breakfast was served at 5am!

The estate is lovely, well maintained and clean. Our rooms were clean, well stocked with all the essentials and were comfortable. De Kloof strikes a wonderful balance between luxury accomodation while still maintaining the feel of a home away from home. The staff are top class.

We will definitely be back again. See you all next year. Team CoachOne.

Positive - Beautiful location, good bed, lovely evening meal, nice cats...
Negative - 1. bathroom unclean (hair clumps on floor, cobwebs everywhere) 2. untrained, unfriendly and sometime bitter staff. Welcome drink poured but not offered, no one to take the luggage to the room (well, in fact the young female receptionist offered but we declined). Adele (who seemed to be a receptionist, waitress, cleaner) made a point of telling everyone she had fever but had to serve breakfast (you should have seen the faces of everyone thinking they were going to get sick) then she said when we checked out that she may come and say goodbye if she had finished washing the dishes. She never smiled and made you feel like you were just in the way. There is a serious staffing issue here. Not sure if it is a family issue followed by untrained and uncoordinated staff. 3. The complimentary wine tasting is a joke. The young female receptionist told us that the South African wine from the region was based on the English art of making wine. WHAT! When we prodded further she admitted she did not really knew what that meant. 4. Pool area very tired and needing a complete overhaul. Pool was dirty. 5. I could go on but this may just tell you everything you need to know - on the wall in one of the sitting rooms there is a newspaper article sponsored or written by the owners saying that Trip Advisor is killing their family business because people write lies about there stay. On our wonderful trip across the South Cape we visited fabulous Guest Houses and Hotels with amazing food, staff and locations. They actively asked us to write on Trip Advisor. Dear Owners - if your read this and the comment slip we left with you - read Trip Advisor and do something. We certainly will not be back.

Thank you very much for your contructive feedback.
We are very pleased to read that you enjoyed the beautiful location of the hotel situated in a quiet green lush secluded valley with breathtaking mountain views.
The comfortable extra lenght beds with quality linen & bedding and our food as mentioned in particular the 5 course evening tasting dinner in our Restaurant 18 Zero One.

We believe it is of great importance to listen carefully to our guests and where necessary use criticism to make sure incorrect issues do not repeat itself..
As the hotel is a small scale family run establishment , which is clearly mentioned , we therefor can offer a very personal service ,which we are well known for .
To have close contact with our guests to make sure and monitor their stay that everything is in order and to their satisfaction............................. because that is our passion ! !

The guests arrived at a late stage and the welcome drinks were offered next to the guest registration forms . One of the hotel management trainnees offered to assist with the luggage but this was declined by the guest.
Due to the size of the hotel our staff members multitask at night if necessary which means that a general staff member will assist with luggage as our dedicated porter & car washer works on day shift and not at night simply because most guests are inhouse before dawn

We always inform our guests upon check in if there is anything extra you wish or wish to change please let us know so we can arrange for , solve any issue or possible problem which may occur and to rectify this immediately.
Cleanliness is very high issue on the hotels list and we strive for total hygiene especailly in the large zen style bathrooms.

During the entire guests stay there was never given any single feedback or comment made about any of above points mentioned.
Without feedback during clients stay we can not do anything or rectify

The daily winetasting offered is just a complimentary free service, a little educational extras where guests can taste three of the local award winning wines accompanied by an informative map of the wine region and one can read all the detailed information about each of the specific wine tasting notes which are created by the individual winemakers.
Our staff members are not sommeliers and do not pretend to be one .
Its a informal way to have a chance to chat with other hotel guests and as the hotel is doing the winetasting service already since many years we still get many emails from guests to thank us and to say how they enjoyed this real nice touch.
The winetasting itself is totally self –explanatory and is free to join.

The pool area with its large pool with wonderful views has been given its annual renovation and has been finalised before the start of this new summer season- , it offers all new comfortable design pool loungers , new towels, pool service ,food & beverage menus and this was definetly all in place during your recent stay last week !

In the hotel lounge there is an newspaper article displayed and written by an well known South African Hotelier who gives his own opinion about what effect social media in general can have towards businesses and in particluar to the hospitality industry. It has been hugely supported by the hotel industry.

“Hospitality is a lifestyle, a calling, not a career.”

“ We go to bed exhausted but satisfied, because we have statisfied more than 99 % of our guests”

We in particular do not ask our guests to write on social media, our guestbooks are full of raving comments of 10 years of servicing the public.

“ If people do not like my hotel, tell me privately, try to solve anything inhouse first , talk with eachother but dont embalzon it across the ether, just like that”
The reviewer hitting a nail on the head

We as hoteliers want our guest to be happy , because if they are happy , we are happy.

We were welcomed at the door by the delightful manager - Adele. After a welcoming drink, we were shown to our upgraded luxury suite. No expense was spared by the management to make guests fell comfortable and pampered. the free wine-tasting before dinner was taken in the sun on the verandah. The 5-course taster menu was excellent and my partner's gluten-free requirements were well catered for. Complimentary, simple to use, Wi-Fi was included , (a necessary requirement these days). Breakfast was an excellent start to a new day on the Garden Route.

My wife and I spent a night at De Kloof on our first wedding anniversary. Service was world class and very friendly and warm. We were fortunate to spend the night in the Manor XL Suite which was super luxurious with all the necessary amenities. Breakfast was a lovely treat and we felt thoroughly spoilt. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Swellendam... we would def make a stop over the next time we're around the area

This is the place to stay when you want some luxury and be treated as royals! The entrance was very nice and the explanation by the lady at the reception was very helpful and friendly. There was a simple free wine tasting with wines from the area, which was very good. The diner was perfect, 5 taste courses and all very delicious. The breakfast the next day is as you wish and all you want with some nice wine as well. We stayed for two nights and will rcommend this place to others for sure!

Firstly, we were so glad we chose Swellendam as an overnight stop. It was a very sweet historic town set at the foot of the mountains, with the whitewashed cottages and thatched roofs.
Secondly, we were so glad we chose to stay at De Kloof Estate - what a wonderful place. It exceeded our expectations.
Such a warm welcome - you are made to feel special. Met at the door with complimentary drinks - and attention to detail second to none. We enjoyed the wine tasting before dinner, in front of the lovely log fire, where you can chat with other guests.
Rooms are lovely, with everything you need, and the breakfasts superb.
A very enjoyable experience.

When we arrived they gave us a couple of room options and both were great - we opted for a room at the front of the property away from all the other guests who were staying the same night. It was a little dark - but we knew that when we chose the room. They had a lovely wine tasting that we enjoyed before heading out to dinner - they recommended an Italian restaurant in town that was outstanding. Breakfast the next morning was lovely - would definitely stay here again.
