“A Peaceful Haven”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 October 2013

My husband and I have just enjoyed a four night stay at "The Hideaway" - our hosts Stephen and Jackie couldn't do enough for us, nothing was too much trouble. Stephens enthusiasm - albeit a tad OTT at times - is second to none. He went out of his way to ensure we knew the best routes to take and the best places to visit on our outings, even providing maps! Also because Swellendam is so small they offered advice on local restaurants - which was appreciated although one does not have to heed their advice. The rooms are very comfortable and the garden is beautiful - a wonderful place to relax after a days outing with a pot of tea and Jackies lovely homemade shortbread. The breakfast are scrummy! with lots of homemade muffins, scones and bread, not forgetting the freshly made fruit salad and muesli - with a full cooked breakfast to follow wow! and lets not forget the "doggie bag" a nice touch to send you on your way. We also enjoyed being invited for a glass of wine and snacks in their home before going out to dinner - a chance to know them a little better - Thank you Stephen and Jackie.

We are currently staying at The Hideaway and are having the time of our lives. We have stayed in some 5 star hotels all over the world but NEVER have we been looked after as well! Stephen is a character and quite the `mother hen` in ensuring that everything is right,ok looking at some reviews some have found this annoying but come on I challenge anyone to find a hotel with such detail, thought and caring as this couple do!!! We have even been invited for drinks tonight with the previous own Audin and his wife, Audin took us yesterday in to the local national park (this was at the request of Stephen! Swellendam is a cute place round the corner as a cafe/shop the Pennant Wing, fantastic place the food divine all home made!!! Would I stay here again...... you bet!!!

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely but we had the Queen Elizabeth (named after a rose)

Stayed one night en route to Port Elizabeth. We were greeted enthusiastically by Stephen and shown our room which was beautifully furnished with all our needs catered for including a free mini bar and a decanter of Port. Stephen was a mine of information on the surrounding area and things to do and places to eat and nothing was too much trouble.

The invitation to drinks before dinner was a lovely touch and enabled us to get to know our hosts a little. The breakfast was exceptional with freshly baked bread, scones and freshly prepared fruit salad as well as hot choices cooked to order.

Overall it was a delightful stay with amazing attention to detail which included washing our car and would not hesitate to recommend The Hideaway to family and friends.

Room Tip: Queen Elizabeth room had a wonderful four poster bed and heated blankets.

My wife and I spent 2 nights at The Hideaway in March. We stayed in 2 different rooms as we stayed for a night either side of a couple of days in Knysna. I can honestly say that this is easily one of the best B&Bs I've ever stayed at.
The hosts (Stephen and Jackie) went out of their way to make our stays as comfortable and enjoyable as possible from making restaurant bookings to advising on the best scenic routes and things to do. Their hospitality is second to none and we particularly enjoyed the drinks and snacks with them in the evenings before going out for dinner.
The rooms we stayed in were both very comfortable and well-appointed. All rooms overlook a lovely garden which guests have full use of. I will not list everything that is in the rooms - suffice to say that they have included what you would expect to find in a 5 star place and a few nice surprises that you might not expect.
Breakfast is a truly wonderful feast with lots of local produce. There is fresh bread and muffins baked on site every morning and a lovingly made fruit salad which is not to be missed. All in all as good a breakfast as you could wish for.
Would we stay again? Without a shadow of doubt! The next time we are in the area we will definitely stay at The Hideaway even if it means arranging our itinerary around a night or two at this wonderful place in a most beautiful part of the world.
Thank you Jackie and Stephen for looking after us so well.

This was our first trip to S. Africa so we relied heavily on Trip Advisor recommendations for restuarants and accomodations. The Hideaway lives up to its excellent reviews. Jackie and Stephen thought of everything to make our stay enjoyable. They plotted out the subsequent days of driving to different areas of S. Africa with the most scenic routes to take, made dinner reservations for us at 2 excellent restaurants for the 2 nights we were there, gave us fabulous breakfasts, washed our clothes, and were extremely hospitable. They even washed our car the morning we left! They obviously love their B & B and are very enthusiastic hosts/owners. Swellendam is a charming little town, centrally located, and has some very good restuarants. (La Sosta is a must!)

The cleanliness and food can't be faulted. However the owners are intrusive, presumptuous, and arrogant, and will ram the questionnaire down your throat as you leave/try to eat breakfast, and stand over you as you fill it in, which perhaps explains the high rating. The rooms are dated but do contain what you would expect. All look out onto a well kept garden.

Breakfast was delicious, service was intrusive.

You will be invited to drinks in the evening with the owners, and they will book restaurants for you before you arrive. Make of this what you will, I would advise making alternative plans ahead.

JelsaySouthAfrica, Owner at The Hideaway, responded to this review, 28 April 2013
We have been deeply shocked by this review but, whatever else the reviewers may think about us, we are not so conceited to believe that we can never get things wrong. We would, therefore, like to apologise for anything that these guests experienced at The Hideaway that did not contribute to their enjoyment of their stay with us and offer the following comments

We are always sensitive to the fact that our guests will wish to enjoy their breakfasts in a calm, unhurried fashion. For this very reason, we try not to introduce the survey into the breakfast room until all our guests have finished their breakfast. Very occasionally this is not possible when some guests are breakfasting early and others later. We always ask our guests if they would like to fill out the survey. There is no obligation to do so and if they choose to decline, their wishes are respected with good grace. We do not stand over our guests when they are filling out the survey, indeed, we make a point of leaving the room if we can, but try to be near enough at hand to assist with the technology when the “aPad” does not work as it should. We never see what guests put into the survey which is submitted by them straight to the survey company via WiFi, so we have no influence over what is entered.

The Hideaway is a Victorian style guest house situated in a house which is a National Monument and, in keeping with this status, our rooms are Victorian in feel and furnishings, but very comfortable. As these guests acknowledge, they all contain the latest in WiFi technology, iPhone docking stations, silent running fridges, the latest reversing air conditioners, electric blankets (in winter) digital safes and modern fully equipped and well appointed bathrooms.
Part of our service at The Hideaway includes the offer of a sundowner for all our guests before they go out to dinner each evening. This can be taken in their room, on their porch, with the other guests in the garden, or in the sitting room around a cheery log fire if the weather is inclement. We find that the majority of our guests very much enjoy the opportunity to meet together to discuss their travel/life experiences but there is never an obligation to join in and personal privacy preferences are always respected.

In the high season, we do make reservations for our guests at the best local restaurants, the majority of which are very small, owner run and extremely popular. This allows our guests to eat at restaurants which would otherwise not have a table available for them if they tried to book on arrival. If guests do not wish to take up these reservations, they are easily cancelled. We have the menus from all the local restaurants at The Hideaway and guests are invited to look at these before they make any final decisions. Guests who know Swellendam and where they would like to eat often book their own restaurants in advance.

At the Hideaway, our aim is to be available to assist when needed, have useful information ready when required and to do whatever we can to make staying with us enjoyable. We are very pleased that these guests found their breakfast delicious!

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay at The Hideaway in March. We had stayed in Swellendam on two previous occasions and never quite found the perfect place to stay. Now we have!
We were warmly welcomed by Stephen and Jackie who were charming and most helpful during our stay.
Our room was large and comfortable with lovely views of the garden. Breakfast was excellent with so much choice of home made food including bread and muffins straight from the oven.
Stephen had provisionally booked restaurants for us as it was a week end and they could have been busy. This was a very thoughtful thing to do and we did appreciate it. He also picked us up from the restaurants so we were able to indulge in lovely some.South African wine!!
A wonderful stay - thank you Stephen and Jackie - we shall be back next year.
