“Fantastic Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2013

What a great place to come to after a long drive from Cape Town to sit at the beautifull table in the kitchen with the great fireplace going and a glass of wine while waiting and chatting to Vera and Etienne while the pot of soup was brewing with fresh bread, cheese and jam for a light dinner. My room on the stoep was so private and warm with the electric blanket all set, it was a fantastic stay and beautifull town. Next time I wil stay a few days to enjoy everything Swellendam has to offer.

I had the pleasure of staying at Cypress cottage now recently on my business travels in Swellendam. What a lovely venue. Perfect setting under the trees. Was too cold to use the large pool but the views of the garden and deck were lovely.

The staff were always helpful and always had a smile.
The breakfast was a lovely spread. Bacon, eggs cooked to your choice, Sausage, tomato and mushrooms all plated in a very nice display.

Fantastic coffee was served as well with a option of teas and fresh juice and cereals. I had the pleasure of having a few lengthly chats with the owner Etienne who told me about the town and the history of the building.

I will be going back for sure.

Room Tip: Room 6 has a lovely deck and view of the mountain and trees and Pool

We stayed here on our drive from Cape Town to a safari at Amakhala in the Eastern Cape. Vera didn't seem that interested in us and we might have avoided some confusion if their daughter (?) had given us more information (where breakfast was, what the wi-fi password was) when she checked us in, but once we met Etienne he was a wonderful host and very helpful. Hint: walking out of the house, go left, right at the fork, and over the bridge to get to some restaurants and the museum complex. To the right, it's just some local shopping centers and grocery stores. This is deceiving because to the right looks busier and the place to go, and to the left you can only just see the bridge--but it's to the left you want to go.

Alan and I stopped over in Swellendam on our journey from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay. Cypress Cottage was a recommendation and it did not disappoint. We did not meet Vera but Etienne was the perfect host. The locality was good and the overall appearance of Cypress Cottage with its well managed gardens, swimming pool and relaxing area was great. The room was spacious, clean and the double bed very comfortable. Our breakfast was excellent with a very good choice of food. Because we were so impressed we decided on our return journey to Cape Town we would again break our journey and stay again but for 2 nights. We had decided to visit Cape Agulhas (southern most tip of Africa) and Etienne recommended places to visit whilst in that area such as the town of Elim which was off the beaten track. Again on Etienne's recommendation on route back to Cape Town we visited the lovely town of Franschhoek. I would definitely recommend Cypress Cottage for its good food, good value and excellent hosts.

My partner and I had drove from Cape Town and aimed to stop over in Swellendam which was half way to our next destination. We had got carried away exploring on our drive there so arrived in the dead of night. We had nothing booked and didn't know where to start! We passed a couple on the street who were English and asked where they were staying. The place they recommended was fully booked but the owner rang round the local b and b's for us (very kind and helpful!) and found a vacant room at Cypress Cottage. We arrived late; Etienne and his wife were so helpful and welcoming! They showed us to our room which had a huge double bed! It was rustic, comfortable and had everything we needed. Due to the time most places were closed for food so Etienne's wife made us some nibbles and gave us a bottle of wine to enjoy on the porch...Mega!
After a comfortable night’s sleep we awoke to a little piece of heaven! The gardens were gorgeous; the house was a grand old thing full of history and quirky furniture. Behind was a modern pool and sun bathing area. The breakfast was amazing...nothing was too much trouble. Etienne enjoyed to chat and recommended some lovely places to stop on our way to Plettenberg Bay. To totally top it off we came to pay and it was the best value place we stayed in! 700 ZAR which is about £55 for 2 adults!!! We would definitely recommend this place and the only regret we had was that we didn’t stay longer!

We arrived in Swellendam and went to the tourist info center to look for a room. After calling several B&B's we finally found space at the Cypress Cottage and immediately booked two nights.
We then noticed that it was Lonely Planet's pick for Swellendam. The service was excellent, the rooms were clean and cosy and the guest were friendly. We had a small issue while we were there and Etienne really showed that he was what an Inn-keeper should strive to be. He was truly concerned about us and showed it by taking the most unbelievable steps to make sure that we were safe and taken care of. Bravo!!!

In the end, we stayed an extra night and it was an absolute hi-light of our trip to S. Africa.

Thank you!
