“A gem in Swellendam”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2014

Had to say a couple of words about this place (and also the town it's in, which gets less visitors than it should.) Swellendam is the third-oldest Afrikaner town in South Africa. That's not a simple history, obviously, but it remains hugely interesting and instructive to see the heartland in all its pride and complexity. There's an incredible nature reserve (Marloth) just north of town -- you hike through the most stunning peaks -- and the food options are very solid: The Old Gaol for casual stuff, and the Drostdy or Koornlands for something more festive (with the former being less starchy and in a gorgeous setting).

But the real highlight of the stay was this cottage, more than two centuries old, and decorated with the utmost taste. The rooms are huge (mine had its own private garden), the bathrooms are massive (clawfoot tub), the bed was king-size and soft, and the morning breakfast was... well, I couldn't eat it all. There's a pool, too. And Vera and Etienne, who run it, are wonderful -- you feel like you're staying in their home, which you kind of are. Utterly charming experience all around, and for $450 ($40) per night if you're solo. It was all I could do not to tell Etienne he should charge double.

Cypress cottage is home away from home. In a welldecorated old house in a beautifully maintained garden with a fine swimmingpool at the back of the house. Most of all the feeling that our hosts Ettienne and Vera gave us that we were very special guests during the four days we were there. The breakfast is great. And the staff, Eunice and Monica, are very helpful too. We look forward going back there.

After many years abroad working in the middle east I had this incredible yearning to return to my roots and decided on a road trip from Jo'burg , Kosi Bay the Karroo and finally back too Kommetjie on the Cape peninsular .I stopped over at Cypress Cottages for a night and ended up spending five nights .The beautiful settings , hospitality and friendliness shown by Hillary Palme was incredible .I joined a group of friends for a Karroo lamb braai in her wonderful garden shadowed by the magnificent mountain over looking the estate .
I can highly recommend this venue as I have stayed all over the world and for what you get it is very inexpensive !

What an amazing place. Stunning rooms full of history and charm, delicious breakfast cooked to order, ideal location in a town crammed with Dutch influence, and a warm, helpful, interesting host in Etienne. It was an absolute pleasure to stay here. The attention to detail at all levels, be it in the bedrooms, bathrooms, breakfasts and gardens are unmatched. Come here and relax for a couple of days in some great company and unique surroundings. You'll be glad you did.

We passed this little beautifull town on our way to Franschhoek, as we booked a room in Cypress Cottages. Our host was the daughter of the couple who were on holiday, she was very friendly and helpfull, as she even made reservations for dinner in a local restaurant for us.
The gardens are full of flowers, and the room gave me a real Afrika feeling.
Breakfast was amazing, just surfing outside on the veranda, no rush.
We strongly recommend this cottage, value for money is good, as we think IT was not expensive at all.

And I loved the little knakworstdog!!

In a quiet location, but still right in the centre of Swellendam, withing walking distance of the Drostdy Museum and some excellent restaurants, Etienne - a charming and very helpful host, receives his guests in this historic house, oozing character and charm. Rooms are spacious, clean, and decorated in good taste and with attention to detail. Bathroom was small, but had all it needed. Beds are fantastic. There is a secluded parking. Breakfeasts, on the porch or inside, are a real treat, both for the eyes and for the tastebuds. We fell in love with this place : highly recommended !

Room Tip: We got the "family-room" (capacity 4) for for just the two of us, and felt like royalty !
