My wife and I stayed two nights at the Old Thatch Lodge in September. The garden is a pleasant spot with lots of trees. Our room was decorated with lots of interesting artifacts that Karin had collected over the years. The room had a thatched roof and was spacious and quiet. A few more window blinds would have provided more privacy. Karen was entusiastic and very welcoming. She gave us directions for the De Hoop Nature reserve suggesting we take the back roads for an interesting look at the country side. The ferry crossing on the way was a real treat.
Breakfast was ample and we stuggled to finish it.
If you don't like dogs then perhaps this is not the place for you.

A beautiful place to stay in an old Dutch thatched cottage. The owner, Karin, is very friendly and gave us ideas for what to do during the day, including providing us with directions to get to the nearby De Hoop Nature Reserve along the more interesting gravel farm roads, which we wouldn't have found ourselves. Karin also provided us with a restaurant recommendation, which, true to her word, was fantastic.
Overall, a perfect place to stay for a relaxing weekend break, with fantastic hospitality, great breakfasts and a big, warm, open log fire.

We were doing the Garden Route and Swellendam was the perfect place to stop over. There were lots of places to choose from but we were glad we chose the Old Thatch Lodge. It was just off the main drag but with the big garden and setting it seemed like it was in the middle of no-where. A very friendly atmosphere (especially the dogs when there was food about!) and a very relaxing night. Topped off wonderfully with a champagne breakfast with delightful fresh fruit...

The old Dutch colonial building has been lovingly restored and whilst some of the floorboards creak, our room was very comfortable and totally unique.

The owner, Karin was very charming and helpful. Breakfast was served with a glass of champagne and comprised of the traditional full breakfast with a huge plate of cut fruit decorated by little flowers, picked from the garden.

Her dogs were large (Irish Wolf hounds), however well behaved and affectionate once they got to know you.

A charming place.

We arrived later in the afternoon to be greeted by a young fellow and several very large and some small and friendly dogs to this gorgeous setting. We were told we had the main building to ourselves which included a lovely lounge area that had a fireplace we were welcome to light. After heading into town for a lovely meal we headed back to our cosy cottage to light a roaring fire and relax in front of it sipping a nice drop of red wine marveling at all the wonderful nick knacks that scattered the rooms. We slept soundly in our beds and had a piping hot shower in the very original style bathroom. We met Karin our host the next morning and she made us a wonderful breakfast and talked to us about the history of the cottage and it's buildings. Thanks for a memorable and lovely place to rest our heads in this equally lovely town.

The Lodge is absolutely beautiful, Karin is also the best host and makes a great breakfast! This place was definitely one of the nicest places we had stayed during out time in the Western und Eastern Cape region! I love the african style rooms and the way everything was decorated! We can only recommend this place and hopefully we'll be back ourselves someday...

We received a warm and friendly welcome from Karin as we used this accommodation travelling both to and from the Garden Route. Quirky African style accommodation with self catering facilities and a communal room with a large fireplace. The large breakfasts were excellent and really well presented. Karin provided us with very good information regarding our intended onward route A good place to stay.
