This is a class act. Great welcome, luxurious rooms and good quiet location.

We were there on a night when the restaurant was closed but the close by recommendation was very good and made more so by it entertaining staff member.

Breakfast at the Country House is huge and high quality - nominally 3 courses but seemed more. A walk to the nearby museums and craft stores is needed after such a feast.

In a very nice touch, we found that our hire car had been washed while we were at breakfast.

Presumably all good travel experiences depend on a host of factors: the weather, first impressions, etc etc. Things may have just panned out really well, but I can't speak highly enough of Schoone Oordt: from the time we arrived till we left, everything was perfect: rusks and a cup of tea when we arrived, sharing a glass of wine outside our room, watching the soccer while sitting in front of the room fire....

In truth, the crucial factor must be the owner's intelligence and perception of what should be an appropriate standard: the renovations to this historical building are in excellent taste, and the rooms are similarly designed; the attention to detail is commendable.

I can't wait to return!

... in a town called Swellendam at a placed called Schoone Oordt... where The Walker's know a thing or two about style, class and hospitality. The rooms are great with super comfortable beds, high thread count linen and spacious bathrooms with heated tiles and towel racks, a shower and a bath. The rooms are very private and quiet and surrounding them, a huge beautiful lush garden. The breakfast is a delicious 3 course meal fit for Kings and Queens. Our friendly waiter joked "With our breakfast you can skip lunch". And then they top it off by washing your car before you leave. What more could you want. If you feel like spoiling yourself do yourself a favour and book a stay at the Schoone Oordt. The best of the best. 5*

Tucked away in a neighborhood, the SOCH was an oasis of beauty and comfort. From the initial greeting to the final exit, everything was done in an understated but high quality manner. The grounds are serene with paths to wander around, a large lawn to play on (plus another hidden away up a narrow set of stairs), and a river just beyond sight. If Shadow, the incredibly friendly resident Husky, chooses to do so perhaps he'll take you on a walk down to the river. The food is high quality, the beds are soft and comfy, the fireplace in the room warmed us up on a chilly June night. My only regret is that we didn't stay more than one night. Highly recommended if you're in the region, driving the Garden Route, or just looking for a romantic getaway.

Traveling from Cape Town to the Garden Route, needed a stopover. This was the only luxury property I could find on the internet.
It was very difficult to find as GPS indicated wrong side of road and the property is not actually on the main road, you have to turn into a side road to find their entrance and there is no sign on the main road.
The check in was in their conservatory - unfortunately being mid winter it was freezing cold, no heaters on in this glass and tiles expansive room!
The room was very nice, but was not prepared, windows open, no fire lit or heaters on. Would have been much more welcoming if initially warmed up. The hot water bottle in the bed was appreciated when returning from dinner.
The food was also very good and the check-in clerk, waiter, cashier being one person called Fidiney keeps the establishment running. Never saw the receptionist or owners anywhere. Fortunately the chef came and helped get the TV working.
Overall I would recommend this property as I had a very comfortable nights sleep.

Room Tip: There is no fitness centre that is why I rated it 1, as there is not n/a I was in room 8, at the e...

Thank you for taking the time to review our property, Debbie. We do appreciate all feedback, even though we are quite saddened to receive an average rating after so many excellents.

We are truly sorry that your room and the Conservatory were not warm & toasty when you arrived. We do have lovely heating and fireplaces, but it seems that the staff misjudged your arrival time and we have chatted with housekeeping that this doesn't happen again. We have noticed that some GPS's send guests across to the other side of the main road, so we always send concise directions and a map on confirmation of booking. Our main road signage is with the town municipality for approval and we hope to have that up soon. We do apologise that we were difficult to find.

On the other hand, we are very happy to read that you had a good nights' rest, enjoyed your dinner & breakfast and loved our Assistant Manager, Fidiney. Thank you for your recommendation and we do hope that you'll return soon, to a better and warmer experience.

With love.

My wife Nancy and I visited here in May 2014. It is a place to stay more than one night. It starts by an warm greeting from the host who is resides here with her husband. They are not, however, the owners. We were greeted with scones and cappuccinos, but tea would have been standard if desired. As the name indicates, this community reflects the Dutch period of colonization. The breakfast had three courses with eggs cooked to order and a nice selection of fruit and pastries. It is a leisurely experience that should not be rushed. Our room was one of several units attached to the main house. They provided turn down service with hot water bottles in the bed to keep your feet warm. It was a bit chilly late in May there. It is considered a safe area and we walked a few blocks to an excellent dinner establishment without feeling the need to take a cab. This was a rarity in South Africa. This was simply a wonderful experience and is worth paying a bit more than the typical B&B in South Africa along the Garden Route.

Sadly my wife and I stayed here only one night. The property is beautiful, but what makes it perfect is the warm and friendly welcome we received. We loved the gardens and our room was delightful; as it was a cold night we lit a fire. The decor of the bedroom is very tasteful and the bathroom had a full size tub and separate shower. We were invited to drinks in the main house prior to dinner outside - it was like catching up with old friends.

The next day we enjoyed a delicious breakfast whilst our car was being washed ready for the next stage of our trip.

A lovely stay and we thoroughly recommend Schoone Oordt Country House. Our only complaint is that it will take us over 16 hours travelling by plane and car for our next visit!
