“Traditional villa and wonderful staff”
Reviewed 24 July 2013

Our family of five (3 teenagers) loved our stay at Bali Aroma Exclusive Villas. The villas had character and the clean, cool, private pool made for a relaxing haven to return to after being out all day in crowded, best Seminyak and Kuta area. We had such lovely helpful staff. Komang the daily manager and Rai the chef were delightful and bent over backwards to help. Nyoman the driver met us at the airport with a friendly smile and an air-conditioned car. Unlike some other reviewers we had no security issues and not many mosquitos either (staff sprayed our rooms each night). If you don't want to wake up to bat poo all over the place, leave the outside lights on at night. WiFi dropped out a lot - but that may have been our fault by having too many users on it at once.

The location will suit those who don't need ready access to nightlife (eg teenagers wanting to be independent) or shops. We found we used taxis to get into the centre of Seminyak and beyond because the busy roads and precarious footpaths do not make for a relaxing stroll. We discovered the beach was the best way to go, exiting at the Oberoi hotel - 20 mins or so. We walked along the beach to Kuta one day - about an hour at a fast walk.

The beach (for Kiwis used to pristine beaches) was a disappointment. Water not clear and filthy smelly streams pouring into it along the sand towards Kuta. I was not tempted to swim but can see why surfers like it. The walk through the empty lot to the beach is ok - shorter than going around via the road. The beach nearest BAEVs has a broken down seawall and, like the rest of Bali, plenty of litter. To the right (facing the sea) there are some good spots to relax in a beanbag with a beer to watch the sunset. Don't eat at the Balisani - menu from the 70s! Mozaik bar (to the left) was good for cocktails at Sunset too. If you really want luxury walk a bit further along to W hotel. Further down the beach towards Kuta (15 mins or so) are Potato Head and Ku De Ta - for hipper places to hang.

Local eating - Naughty Nuris just 2 mins walk away was great. Excellent ribs and vibrant atmosphere. Opposite the Semaya hotel is Sea Circus - probably our best meal in Bali if not Three Monkeys in Ubud (try the chilli prawn quesadilla). Give Biku (5 mins away by taxi) a miss for dinner (very average food but not expensive). Anomali in Seminyak was excellent for coffee. Sambal Prawn did a good dinner too in a lovely setting - try the shrimp balls on coriander salad. Warung Made in Kuta is better than Warung Made in Seminyak.

Spas - Beling at the end of the BAEV driveway was good value. Sundari (5 minute taxi) was more luxurious and a better quality treatment - owned by a German lady.

Excursions - we arranged a driver for the day through BAEV for US$50 which was very good value and for US$85 we had a car, driver and guide for 11 hours - a one-way trip to Ubud area and Candidasa (our next destination) on the East Coast. Again very good. For closer destinations, insist on Bluebird taxis as they are reliably metered and the drivers excellent. 5000 RP callout charge but worth it.

Opportunities for BAEV to improve include:
- new towels - the bathroom towels are now not white, worn and need replacing
- a refreshed breakfast menu - we got a bit tired of the same options every day for 5 days
- more rails/hooks to hang wet towels
- a comfortable chair in the rooms (to relax in air conditioning rather than having to sit on the bed)

They are building a large pool for general use which will be nice for those wanting to relax in a larger pool area (presumably with cocktails).

So BAEV was a lovely introduction to Bali that we would recommend.

I left Bali Aroma with mixed feelings as to whether it was good, great, or average. For anyone who has read my previous reviews they will see I am generally a positive person, an angle I believe helps to overcome the little obstacles you face when on holiday, and increase enjoyment - a lesson I need to impose on the reviewer before me, who happened to travel in the same group of friends !!
Firstly then, the positives.
The location is handy to the beach, with a short walk through the neighbouring overgrown paddock, and then a lane way . There is a quirky little restaurant at this point overlooking the beach, where they send scooters 100m down an alley to the kitchen to retrieve the food, and then again with the dirty dishes! The food was good, and cheap.
In the other direction you are quickly in the hubbub of Bali life, the near bye road has massage opens to the left ( great value at about $5 aus per hour ) and a convenience store that has all the essentials. There is also a formal money changer here. (Whatever you do, do not use the alleyway money changers, they have all the tricks in the book, and WILL rip you off ! ) Head to the right and you will come across restaurants, shops etc. We ate close by at Naughty Nuri's, Sardine (high quality, great outlook) and Warung ............forgot, but recommended by Aroma staff.
The villas look great, and are each a self contained haven. The upstairs bedrooms are large and well equipped and have great views over the surrounding area. The downstairs bedrooms are also large, have everything you need, however can be a little dark due to their main windows facing onto the large alfresco lounge kitchen area. The airconditioning in the bedrooms worked well. The open air bathrooms were great and didn't take long to 'adapt' to. The alfresco area worked well and included enough seating for our group. The pool was good, and a fun way to lower the core temperature on those hot and humid days.
The staff were always very friendly and tried their best to be helpful. They were quick to organise taxi's, transfers even buses when required, and made phone calls on our behalf when we felt the local language would be an asset.
Breakfasts were delivered at the arranged time, and offered a good amount of options.
Now for the not so good -
We arrived to find that Bali Aroma is half way through a redevelopment which meant that they are building about 3 more villas, and a large communal swimming pool, in the area that was once the open lawned areas between the villas and the reception block. Unlike my friend, the noise did not have a big impact on my holiday, but the fact was, instead of experiencing an open and tranquil space presented on the website, we had workmen with wheelbarrows, masons, brickies , roof tilers etc.
The kitchens were short on cooking equipment and crockery - no pot big enough for cooking for the number of persons in the villa - I'm sure staff would have helped us out with this had we asked.

To leave Bali Aroma , apart from the track to the beach, you need to travel a lane way that is about 100m long. At present there are a couple of building projects in operation, and many of the workers seem to live on-site , essentially sleeping rough. We had 5 teen girls in our group, who along with the mums, felt uneasy walking along there , at one stage feeling intimidated by the actions of some of the men - this is however all perception, and not within the control of Bali Aroma - just possibly current location advice.
Arrival our bathroom had an unpleasant smell, knowing that there had been significant rain in the days prior, we gave it the benefit of the doubt, thinking that the drainage was probably overwhelmed and would improve as things dried out. We were wrong, so in the last 2 days (we are not good complainers!) of our stay we mentioned it to management who immediately sent someone to rectify the problem. This first attempt did not change the problem so we asked again, to which again there was a swift response again, however the person with the skills needed wasn't there - so no change. I suspect the problem was more systemic in regard to the building works, but hopefully it is sorted for the next person.
Our pool was out of action until our second day because it had lots of tiny crabs in it - but we had our friends pool next door, so no big deal.
A problem that Bali Aroma can do little about is the condition of the nearby beach. It is true that there had been significant rain in the days prior to our arrival , which exacerbated the problem of rubbish, but it was quite depressing to see the beach covered in garbage. While the condition did improve over the week that followed, there was always rubbish in the water and on the beach - the same but to a lesser extent the week after that In Sanur. Likewise the waterways flowing into the see both north and south were smelly. I have it on reasonable authority that even the new W hotel simply has a pipe that runs 300 m out into the ocean to release all it's effluent............

So.......... We had a good time, and couldn't fault the efforts of staff at Bali Aroma, but we just felt a bit let down by the image of the perfect tropical holiday, versus the reality .

Room Tip: The single story villas all look out onto their own garden and pool area which is beautifully manicu...

Booked in as a group of four families. Turned up with the excitement of the 'short walk' to the pristine 'white sandy beach' as quoted in their brochure. Absolute crap. the short walk was through discarded land strewn with rubble and scrub. The beach was worse - black volcanic sand hidden under a virtual blanket of rubbish (old shoes, cigarret butts, food wrappings, animal or human poo etc) from the local drains and no doubt sewers. Plenty of red flags warning of the dangers of entering the water. Did i mention the smell? The Villas look great, but take a closer look and they are slapped together, Our loo was falling apart, rising damp is emerging, no ceiling fans so it gets really stuffy under the outdoor roof, tap fittings are corroding, our fridge was rusting, and one of the pools was unusable as it was infested with small crabs for a few days. Adding to this you are staying in a construction zone with hammering and circular saws going all day, and any amount of creepy workers hanging around the shadows outside your Villa door. Made mention of all this to the front desk with a suggestion that perhaps a discount on the hexy $350USD(plus) cost per night would be appropriate - but this, it seems, was too difficult to consider. Anyway, if you want to know what it would be like living in a compound of retirement homes with no views, flood prone paths, and humming air conditioners, book away and line the pockets of the owners with @#$% loads of $Rupiah. Personally if these Villas are what you call 'exclusive' next time i'll be hunting for something more 'inclusive'.

Dear 95David_F95,

Thank you for your recent stay at Bali Aroma Villas, and for taking the time to share your feedback with us.

We are indeed a short walk to the beach, to walk from the main road which may take longer (10 to 12 minutes on foot) or the short stroll crossing the empty land (we always recommend to take the main road due to safety and convenient reason). however some of our guest chose to take the shortcut if they want to go to Mozaic Beach Club, etc. and of course when it was raining last couple of week, the path become muddy and wet.

In regards to the Villa, thank you for bringing up the issue. We have done several checks before each guest check in to ensure all the facilities and amenities are in good condition.
I have passed your several concerns to department related to check again and fix any issue of the amenities.

I'm dismayed to hear the condition about the beach when you were here. The reason for some rubbish found is perhaps due to constant rain last week, and i just visited the beach this afternoon, it has been cleaned and a lot of tourist are swimming.

In addition, about the upgrading projects, apologize for the inconvenient it has caused you. We tried as much as we can to keep the noise to a minimum level with working time from 9.30 to 5.00PM. no big machines were used. and since each Villa is protected with high wall, the noise will not be really disrupting.

You stayed in our 3 bedroom pool Villa with a pool view in lower ground and rice field view on the 2nd story. We received all the booking from your friend who also staying with you, Ms. Emma Bryant. and we have extend special early discount when she made the booking in January for your group.

Again, we are sorry if your recent stay did not meet your expectation. Please be ensured we took your comments in consideration for future discoverers. We sincerely hope to accommodate you again at Bali Aroma Villas.

Best regards,

Despite BOOKING AND PAYING IN FULL for our booking 6 months prior to travel through Agoda, we sent an email 2 days before we were due to arrive telling us that the villas were booked out and that we were to be sent to another villa, apparently managed or owned by the same group. While the other villa was very nice, it was not in the location that I had sought in making the original booking nor was it the style of villa I had carefully researched and selected. I feel that taking the booking and payment AND receiving a booking confirmation only to be sent elsewhere is extremely dishonest - we were already in Bali and did not want the stress of having to locate other accommodation at short notice so accepted the alternative. Obviously there was a request for a longer booking that was given preference to ours. So much for careful booking well in advance to avoid disappointment!!!! The experience with Bali Aroma Exclusive Villas was very very disappointing.

Dear Addicted_to_Byron,

Thank you for your review of the Bali Aroma Villas. On behalf of Management, i would like to extend an apology about your recent stay in Bali. As you might already know, we experienced an issue with our reservation system which resulted in overbooking. This is absolutely not the service we strive to provide here at the Bali Aroma Villas. Therefore we decided to relocate you the same or higher category, to Bali Luxury Villas to avoid further complications once you arrived in Bali Aroma.

We sincerely hope to have the pleasure to accommodate you at the Bali Aroma Villas.

The villa's were amazing, set in lush tropical gardens with high walls and old decorative double swinging doors with individual private pools. However, the outside grounds are currently (June 2013) under construction and there is a lot of daytime disruption with noise and heavy machinery movements. Once this construction has been completed, I have no doubt about this villa complex being what everyone envisages Bali to be.

A note about security - The Villas have semi exposed bathrooms with baths and showers in a separate private garden to the rear of each Villa. The bathroom is also where the wardrobes and safe deposit box is located. We, Unfortunately, had an incident of theft from this area. We can not establish if it was from internal house keeping or from someone accessing the bathroom area via the external wall. The incident was reported to management. With all the extra building personnel and the fact that the exposed open bathroom wall backs onto adjoining property, I advise to all to keep your belongings secured within the main bedroom.

Room Tip: Stock up on Mozzy coils. Call and enquire when the building works will finish.

This was the most relaxing vacation we had in a long time. The pool was perfect as were the accommodations. From day 1 the staff knew my kids name and made them feel welcome. They were always willing to help with any of our request. The food was delicious, especially the pancakes and the sweet and sour chicken. There were a few bugs, mostly ants and mosquitos, but the staff provided us with some coils and bug spray which resolved the problem. It was really cool having a shower outside and we always felt we were in complete privacy.

After travelling 12 countries in 1 year with 3 kids (2, 8 and 10) , it was a great way to finish our Asian adventure.
