For my partner and I this was our second stay at Kiss - previously we had stayed in the Deluxe 2 bedroom Villa Surga, and we couldn't have been happier!! For this stay we were in Villa Kenangan, which is marketed as the honeymoon suite. Due to having a friend join us mid-way through our holiday, we had booked Kenangan for 5 nights, then 3 nights in the 3 bedroom Villa Cium and then the last 2 nights back in Villa Kenangan.
Luckily for us, and I suggest others do this too – we had negotiated the rates down substantially from those that are advertised on Kiss’ website. If we had had to pay the advertised rates, my review would be dramatically worse – but even with the discounted rate we paid, which is still a couple of hundred dollars a night, you would expect quite a bit of luxury, cleanliness and relaxation – so we were very very disappointed.
The competition for Villas has heated up dramatically in Bali over the last couple of years – sadly for Kiss their Villas have become run down, yet the prices are still very high – hence why you can negotiate so much!!
Although the staff were great and amazingly friendly – but I must say not quite as good as our first visit there 2 years ago – it was the state of the villa that was the reason for our disappointment. Ideally you want to spend as little time in the bedroom of your villa as possible during the day, but for us that wasn’t an option unless we were out in the pool or the spa – the spa had very little lighting, so going in the spa when it was dark wasn’t an option. The outdoor sitting / lounge area, although it was nice on the eye, it wasn’t practical or comfortable to sit on, and the fact it was constantly covered in ants, you didn’t even try and get comfortable!! When it rained the roof leaked and so there were dangerous puddles all over the wooden floors and on the seats – the water was also leaking dangerously close to power points and wires. So yes, we were resigned to the room for the majority of the time and this wasn’t overly great either, as the standard of cleaning left a lot to be desired, the tv worked only intermittently - but the air con was cold, so that was something!!
Then there is the bathroom – it is outdoors, so the concept is wonderful, however not practical for this particular villa – and the reason for that is the sun beats down in the bathroom constantly, so even a quick trip to the toilet can mean you need to change your t-shirt before you head out!! In the villa we stayed in last time - Surga, the fact it was outdoors was fine, but with the sun shining directly into the bathroom at Villa Kenangan it wasn’t good at all. Also, this particular villa backs onto a big block of rice paddy’s, so of an evening the noise from all the insects is very loud, the mozzies are everywhere, and a trip to the toilet during the night can be interesting to say the least, with assorted bugs, mozzies etc all vying for position with you and the area around the toilet constantly covered with ants – you wouldn’t want to have Bali belly that’s for sure!! Hardly what you would call luxury….. And although at first glance everything seems “nice” when you walk in, when you look a little closer the walls, floors etc are covered in cracks and big water marks etc, which gives a feeling that the bathroom is not clean – particularly in the shower, to the point where my girlfriend wore thongs in the shower. Security is also a concern in this particular villa, as there is nothing but rice paddys on the other side, and although the wall is high, if someone wanted to get in, they very well could, so you always needed to lock the door that led to the bathroom!! There appeared to be security cameras facing the rice paddy’s, but security couldn’t patrol this area as it was not part of the Kiss property. There is large bathtub, which appears wonderful, but you can’t use it of a night due to the insects and mozzies – however we did try and take a bath one afternoon, but were horrified when we moved the pull out water spout and nothing short of a few thousand ant like creatures joined us on the side of the bath – we cut the bath short and that was the final straw for us. After 4 nights we advised Rama that we would be moving to a new hotel or villa.
Before this we had also gone to view the crème de la crème 3 bedroom Villa Cium at Kiss that we were due to relocate to after 5 nights, but to be honest it also looked dark, dingy and run down, by no means luxurious – so the fact we were due to move to that villa the next day, it was in no way an incentive for us to stay on at Kiss. Rama tried to change our minds, and said he would discount our rate even further – but we were happy to pay what we were already paying - we just wanted a little bit of luxury and relaxation time during our holiday, like we got 2 years ago at Kiss, but it was nowhere to be seen and after Rama reluctantly agreed to not charge us for the remaining 6 nights we had booked, we were off and were so very glad we decided to do that.
I have read a lot of the reviews on Kiss before I wrote this and I am surprised so many of them are very positive. For the record we are seasoned Bali travellers, having gone there dozens of times between us and staying in numerous assorted Villas around Seminyak. Kiss was the first one we had decided to stay at for a second time, but sadly it was the first one we have ever walked out on half way through a stay. A beautiful villa, that is comfortable, clean and inviting is certainly not too much too ask when spending $200 + a night…… Unless drastic changes and renovations are made to Kiss very soon, it will continue to decline and people will stop going there – I hope for all the lovely staff that doesn’t happen!!
