“Enjoyable stay”
Reviewed 23 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

We were so happy to be able to stay at villa erama after being stranded in Bali due to the ash cloud. Putrid and the other staff were all so helpful and accommodating. Thanks for a great stay in a wonderful villa

“Quiet relaxing Bali weekend with a bit of sightseeing.”
Reviewed 2 April 2015 for a stay in March 2015

Traditional Balinese villa with a bit of character. Large rooms, plenty space. Outside area, including pool and sitting area was lovely. House very clean. Beds made up immaculately every day. Breakfasts were superb, served on time each morning and exactly what we asked for, Hati was so obliging. We had one evening meal cooked for us in the villa and it also was superb. Only negatives were towels, smelled lovely but so discoloured and some had holes in them. Taps and shower heads were a bit dated as well. Putu our driver was great he gave us suggestions for dinner and helped us decide on an itinerary for a day's touring around Bali. This is the second time I have booked with Susan and was not disappointed.

We are regular visitors to Bali and decided to treat ourselves to a Villa experience, we will never stay in a hotel again. The Villa is huge and very well fitted out, the outdoor area is perfect for entertaining. The Villa staff really made our trip, they are some of the most amazing and basically became friends within the week.

“Everything we wanted...”
Reviewed 1 February 2015 for a stay in December 2014

There were 8 in our group, including 4 adults, a teenager, and three young ones between ages eight and twelve.
Booking was as easy as pie, Susan was super good to deal with, and the communication was attentive, detailed and spot on.
The house is cared for by the invisible Hati. He is an absolute magician at cleaning and keeping himself unseen at the same time. He is well back up in the kitchen by Mati. The food we had prepared for us in the mornings was great, and kept us going for the day.
Our dirver Gede was the best thing about our holiday - we wouldn;t have survived without him and his knowledge... We should have sought and taken his advice earlier in the trip - where to go, where to eat, what to see, and when to see it...c'est la vie...he is the guy with the knowledge.
Fair warning, the house is in mostly good condition, but is starting to get old. The bathrooms need a little extra attention and the hot water is limited and slow to appear.
The location of the house is fine, and the locale is quiet and peaceful, but still close to the main road. The Wifi in the house is present, but sluggish - I wouldnt reccommend streaming movies, but it's fine for downloading emails if you don't mind having a galss of wine while you wait.
Mosquito's are a bit of a problem, but they're a problem everywhere.
Our group is happy to have stayed here, and we all have fond memories, Thanks.

“Perfect for the big family”
Reviewed 9 January 2015 for a stay in January 2015

Perfect villa that has everything you require on a holiday! We stayed three generations and the villa is perfect if you have some people who wakes up early and maybe some teenagers who wants to sleep until noon. There are big social areas with comfortable sofas on both floors.

The pool area is also very nice including a nice sitting area by the pool, sun beds, outdoor shower and a very special and comfortable "bed" where you easily have an extended siesta when needed.

The villa is within walking distance from Seminyak city center, but in the heat you preferably go by car. That's one downside with the villa, that it's not situated down town. If it would have been situated closer to the city we would have rated it Excellent. On the other hand a car + driver is included in the price so we used him to go down town and also to make day trips to for example Sanur, Uluwatu and the beaches in the Seminyak area. The drivers are very flexible and can also help out with some sightseeing, depending on which of the drivers you get.

In the villa there is a young guy doing the housekeeping. He is working from breakfast until 17:00. He serves breakfast at the time you want. There is also another person preparing the breakfast. That service is excellent!!! The housekeeping service in general is excellent! He makes the beds, changing linen and towels and making the rooms tidy and clean. Apart from that he helps out with calling the driver or other services when needed. So thank you Hadi!!!

One thing to keep in mind. The agreement we had was in USD but there are three different options of accounts where to pay, USD, EUR and IDR. We apparently picked the wrong account number, transferred USD to the EUR account which at the end cost us 200 USD for nothing.

All in all we are very happy to have spent 6 days in villa Erama!

“Simply superb..”

Our girls mini break was a most enjoyable 4 days and Villa Erama was the perfect place to spend it. Clean, peaceful, spacious, great location; the pictures on the website do not do it justice. Highly recommended.

“So difficult to get in touch with the owner we thought we were scammed”

First, the good stuff:

1) The housekeeper, Hadi, was extremely helpful. He answered our questions and attended to our requests promptly, including requests for additional bed, blanket etc. The guest relations manager, Sindu, was also helpful. Twice, our internet went down (and it was because one of us unknowingly unplugged the power supply to the router) and he got someone to fix it for us promptly.

2) The villa is huge and accommodated all 10 of us comfortably. There were four rooms, three with king-sized bed, one with three single beds. My wife and I stayed in a room, my parents and brother stayed in another, my in-laws in another, my three sisters-in-law in the room with three single beds. We had to ask for an additional bed in one room. Note that there are only three ensuite bathrooms. The room with single beds do not have an ensuite bathroom.

3) The housekeeping was very meticulous and well-done. We reused our bathing towels, but our face towels were replaced, our beds made, our clothes folded and kept nicely each day. They were also unobtrusive.

4) A mobile phone with local prepaid SIM card is provided at the villa. It has the contacts of the villa manager and the housekeeper. It was helpful for us to contact our driver.

5) The sofa in the living rooms were large and comfortable. They also come equipped with coolers and air-conditioning. We never felt warm indoors despite the soaring temperature outdoors. My younger brother and sisters-in-law had fun gathering around the living room playing card games. There is also a big TV with cable TV (I think, I didn't watch). There is also a wide selection of DVDs that you can rent (for free) from the villa staff (we didn't). There is also a grand piano in the living room, and my wife and in-laws had fun playing it.

6) There is internet connection via Wi-Fi throughout the house.

7) The pool is a lot of fun for the children.

8) There are some interesting shops along the road within walking distance of the villa. They are not the usual tourist shops selling souvenirs.

---

Next, the not-so-good stuff, but what you really need to know:

1) There are a lot, a lot of mosquitoes. We come from Singapore, a tropical country, and we are used to seeing and living with a lot of mosquitoes. But the number of mosquitoes we encountered at Villa Erama scared us. There were at least one electric mosquito repellant found in each room, and one in the common area of each storey, and so the whole villa does smell mildly of repellant/insecticide. However, that has not stopped the mosquitoes from infesting the house. My parents bathroom was swarming with mosquitoes (they managed to kill four mosquitoes at one go)

In a guest information document provided at the villa, it says that mosquitoes are to be expected because there is a lot of nature in Bali. It advises you to use repellent to protect yourself against mosquitoes.

2) Elaborating on the previous point, the villa is actually found at the end of a road with a number of other private houses (possibly belonging to residents). The surroundings are currently other houses under construction. It definitely doesn't look like it is near 'nature' (to justify the mosquito problem). In short, the view outside the villa is unimpressive, and even ugly because of the construction work going on.

3) The professional photos provided by the villa on TripAdvisor look really impressive, and feel a lot better than reality. The bedroom, the bedframe, the cupboard look a lot more tired in reality. Also, the photos cleverly hide the not-so-impressive surroundings of the villa.

4) We experienced at least 5-6 power trips while we were staying in the villa (there could be more while we're out). According to the guest information document, this is to be expected. Power was restored in a minute each time. I later checked with the housekeeper Hadi whether the power was designed to restore by itself. He told me that it does not, and that another staff (perhaps the driver) was probably nearby to fix it when the trip occurred. We were worried about not being able to restore power if the villa staff were not nearby, so I got Hadi to show me where to flip the switch in case of power trips. Seems easy enough, but good to know.

5) The villa was supposed to provide a cook who will cook us a breakfast and dinner for free (groceries excluded). In the end, we could not use this service at all. The driver/guide that we engaged brought us to a local market to do our own shopping for seafood (my mother loved that). We had planned to ask the villa cook to cook a dinner for us with the seafood that we bought. However, our housekeeper Hadi told us the chef can only prepare them by steaming. In the end, we brought them to a local restaurant for cooking instead.

6) Perhaps the worst part of my experience with Villa Erama took place even before we arrived. I started sourcing for accommodation in early January for our stay in late March. Initially, my queries were promptly replied by the villa owner, Susan. Eventually, replies took 5 days, then 20 days.

I must have sent 3-4 emails to follow up on my queries but received no replies. I tried calling Susan but could not reach her. I eventually had to call the guest relations manager, Sindu, to check on my queries. Sindu, however, is not in-charge of the booking process and could not answer my queries. He then offered to get in touch with Susan. Even then, it took another few days before I heard back from Susan.

This entire process was especially worrying. I had already paid a security deposit of US$400 and 50% of the entire cost to book the villa but could not get a confirmation nor get in touch with Susan for almost a month.

In the days leading up to our vacation, I was worried that this would all be a scam, and we'd be left with no accommodation upon arrival in Bali (and be a few thousand dollars poorer). Thankfully, that wasn't the case, but the stress was very real. If anything, this experience made me unable to recommend this holiday rental to my friends.

---

Finally, the not-so-good stuff that are good to know, but not critical:

1) While the description of the villa states that there are iPod docks provided in the rooms, they are of the older 30-pin docks that do not fit the new iPhone 5, 5s, the iPad mini, or the newer iPads using the lightning cables.

2) The jacuzzi at the end of the pool is actually too weak to have any effect.

3) The internet connection is very slow. I had to do some work during my stay there and had trouble uploading a file about 20 megabytes. It took multiple tries, and took about 15-20 minutes on ethernet cable.
