Description: Serves up authentic Balinese, Mediterranean and Continental cuisines. This rooftop restaurant and martini bar with an open sky garden terrace is a wonder fall way to watch the sun sinks onto the horizon and cult street lights blaze in to evening sky, with great music, exotic cocktails and fine food this is a lovely way to relax and enjoy night away.

We were a but nervous being the only two people for lunch on a Saturday, but it was a great place!

We had 1 western and 1 eastern dish, both nice but the eastern was better.

Other people started to come in after us.
Lovely rooftop setting with a pool table and bar

We really enjoyed the ambience of the al fresco dining up on the rooftop and were treated to some amazing Balinese food and service. We both had the chicken soup and then shared the beef rendang and nasi goreng. The fresh Balinese flavours were all there in each dish and this was by far the best traditional meal we had on our trip - it was disappointing to go there on the 6th night of 7 or we would definitely have returned 2 or 3 times in the week.

The staff were very attentive and their chocolate-Contrieu martinis were to die for and made an excellent substitute for dessert when we moved seemlessly to their chillout, cocktail sofas to relax and look at the stars.

As far as value for money goes, the night before we spent $151 AUD at samaya the breeze restaurant watching the sunset for the same amount of food and drink, albeit for western food. At vivai we spent $57 AUD total including our 4 cocktails, mineral water and food which is unbelievable value and besides the sunset, there was very little between them. You'd be mad not to go!

This is a sizeable rooftop restaurant, which has the opportunity to be much more than it is currently. The food is traditional, but nothing special (very chewy rendang). During our meal (large birthday party group), Balinese dancers treated us to a display of traditional dances, which as it was already dark and the area they were dancing in was completely unlit, lost it's appeal fairly quickly. Unfortunately, we were unable to return to convivial conversation, as the music which accompanied the dancing was at a 'you are not going to ignore this' volume level. On the plus side, the staff are friendly and capable and they coped very well with the very large group.

My partner and I did our 3rd trip to Bali and as we were staying in Seminyak, we decided to do a cooking class in the local area.

We found Vivai restaurant on the net prior to leaving and decided we would go with this school (they very quickly answered emails we sent them with reservation queries / questions)

We decided to do the spices cooking class. We ate at the restaurant 2 nights prior to the cooking school and was extremely impressed with the food and the prices!!!

We met chef Dean (an expat Briton who knows his stuff) on the morning and was immediately taken by his great personality and ability to communicate with all attendees.

Our group of 6 made our way in the restaurant van to the traditional Denpasar markets. Wow, what an experience! Rows and rows of fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and upstairs there are spices galore of all sorts of colors and shapes. We had our assistant walking with us and as the goods were purchased, were put in the basket atop her head.

We wandered around the market for about 90 minutes/2 hours before making our way back to the restaurant to start cooking.

Chef Dean clearly explained the different spices and methods of preparation of the different meats (chicken & duck) and the seafood (fish and calamari). I cleaned squid which I had never done before and prepared fish.

Throughout the afternoon we were supplied drinks such as bintang, dragon fruit juice and cocoa martini (beautiful)

We then sat down for a meal of a heap of different dishes, such as nasi goreng, the duck (beautiful), fish sate and balinese chicken. All the food was terrific!!

If you really want to do something different when in Bali and have a great time, then don't hesitate to contact Vivai restaurant - you won't be disappointed!
