“Well situated villa with good amenities”
Reviewed 7 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013

This was our first stay in a villa in Bali, as we have always stayed at a large resort in Legian previously and thought we would give a villa a try.

We stayed in this villa for four nights with our daughter & her fiance, and my niece. It was very nice, but we did find the presence of staff lurking around a bit uncomfortable as we are not used to private staff in Australia. However, they were really nice and did whatever was required to make our stay comfortable. The villa next door was being finished off and we had to walk through a construction site to get to our villa, and walk under ladders etc. Have to say we didn't hear any construction noise. Lugging heavy suitcases over a path of stepping stones was not easy either, but is typical Bali. The decor in the villa is lovely and each room has it's own full ensuite and safety box (we did have issues with the safety boxes, but they were resolved) and the bedding and linen were very comfortable. There are marks all over the wall that they photoshop out of the pictures and this makes it look a bit shabby. TV's are in each room as are DVD players.

The pool was a blessing as the time of the year we were there it was incredibly hot and we did not experience any of the coldness that other reviewers spoke of. It was kept clean and we used it quite a lot. The doors going out to the pool were not very easy to use though and the front door had swelled and it stuck to the floor making getting in quite difficult. They were going to fix this when we left as the staff found it difficult also. Having doors open also allowed mosquitos to get in so invest in some Bushman's insect repellent as the one supplied is ineffective.

The other issue was there are 4 separate bedrooms but only 2 keys for all of the guests. This was a real pain in the bum as we all did separate things and it required leaving a key under a statue where the construction workers could see us doing that - not really good for security. Each room should have their own entry key.

Breakfast was good and they made anything you wanted and then some. There is a water filter that provides iced water or boiling water and this was a boon not having to buy bottled water all the time. The main shower is a rain shower and the shower head needs cleaning as the head has calcification that makes the water shoot all over the place. The taps also are on the wall behind the shower head meaning you get wet just by turning on the shower (we have a plumbing business so expect taps to be accessible safely so you don't get wet or burn yourself with the water). Toilet doubles as a bidet (discovered as it shot up on the wall!!) and lid needs to be adjusted as it falls onto your back when sitting on it.

The electricity went off too one morning early and as it was their Hindu Xmas celebration that day, we could not get onto anyone to sort it. There appeared to be a generator outside the villa in the wall, but it wasn't clear which villa it belonged to, so we had a whole morning without electricity. In a resort this would go unnoticed as someone would activate backup generators at no inconvenience to you.

Kitchen is fully functional and all supplies are in cupboards or behind the cupboard curtain (this looked slightly tacky in what was otherwise nice decor). There is a laundry just outside the villa - very cheap - t-shirt cost 2000rp (20cents) to be washed, ironed and packaged. Not far from double six and Cocoon is just up the road.

The other complaint was changing your money. Do not trust any of the moneychangers around the villa as they are absolute rogues as was the Circle K off double six (Jalan Legian I think). The only reliable one was the Circle K near Cocoon and you could access down this long short cut alley that came out at the Circle K that faced the beach. This was the only place that did not rip you off or cheat you.

Overall, the villa was lovely and my review is probably indicative that we prefer a larger hotel or resort where staff are not so obvious and there is someone to sort any issues immediately, and you can change money within your resort. We have a lovely house in Australia, so this was probably no novelty for us and felt a bit isolating.

If you want seclusion and home environment, then a villa will be what you're looking for. If you want something more social and vibey with everything taken care of, then consider a resort instead.

I would recommend this villa though for families and those with young children as there is plenty of space for kids to let off steam while you can still watch them. The pool however, would need to be closed off with the doors (they can lock) to ensure safety for real little ones. Excellent value though over resorts and an economical way to holiday in style.

Dear Guest, thank you for your detailed review of your recent stay with us at Villa Raffaela.
Firstly, let me say I am sorry for any inconvenience caused by the building works for the new 3 bedroom villa next door which we will also starting holiday renting this month. Please to report that the works have now been completed with all building materials removed from the site, so these issues wont occur in further.
You are also correct about some of the walls having cracks etc. I can assure you that these weren't photo shopped out of any of the photos we have of the villa, its just that when we did the photos the villa was brand new. The cracks have occurred since then due to the works of the adjoining villa, and now that these are fixed, these cracks will be repaired and also some of the doors fixed that have dropped. We have the villa blocked out for these maintenance works over the next week, so the villa will be as good as new again by mid November.
Sorry to hear that you had some troubles with money changers. There are several trust worthy money changers nearby, so we will ensure in future that all guests are informed by the staff and also noted in our guest directory for the locations of these businesses.
Thank you again for your feedback.
