“Good enough to go back to!”
Reviewed 9 October 2011

This was our second stay at the Samaya in 18 months and we loved it all over again.

Absolutely ideal place to relax and unwind, but close enough to the shops to allow the "boss" some serious shopping therapy. It has to be the standout resort in Bali. Quiet and sophisticated, the Samaya is the perfect place for some mature-age, luxurious over-indulgence, and what a superb beachfront setting!

The staff couldn't do enough for us and genuinely seemed to enjoy meeting the guests.

Will we go a third time, (from Oz )? We probably will.

Room Tip: I believe all the Courtyard Villas are similar, so no real preference. But the closer to reception t...

My wife and I have stayed at the Samaya several times, mostly as a couple, but also with family and with friends. We first experienced the charm of the island thirty years ago, and although many parts of Bali now suffer from overcrowding, traffic snarls and general overdevelopment, there remains an oasis of tranquility on the beach at Seminyak, and that is the Samaya Villas.
Currently the beachside apartments are being rebuilt, but the Royal Courtyard villa allocated to us last week (over the road from the beach) was spacious and beautifully appointed. And we were still able to enjoy the oceanside pool, the music of the gentle surf, and the magic of early morning breakfasts and glowing sunset dinners at Breeze, Trip Advisor's #1 restaurant in Seminyak.
Samaya's staff are respectful, courteous and obliging. Here is a hotel that genuinely places the guest first and foremost. No request seemed too much trouble. The wi-fi was free and efficient. Reading lights above the bed were perfectly designed. The bathroom was huge. Room maintenance was always timed to coincide with the needs of the guest. Our view is that the Samaya is everything a hotel should be, but (regardless of expense) rarely is.
As an added bonus, Samaya is situated within walking distance of Seminyak Square, Ku de Ta, and some of the highest rated restaurants in Bali.

Having travelled from our home in London for our honeymoon, we'd stayed at the Mandarin Oriental (Singapore), Anantara (Seminyak) and Komaneka at Tanggayuda (Ubud). We'd love every single moment of our trip when we arrived at our last port of call - a week booked into the (we now know) atrocious Bali Hyatt in Sanur. After ten minutes in the Hyatt, we were in an internet cafe desperately trying to find somewhere to spend our last week which didn't look like a 1960's concrete tower block, when we chanced across a last-minute deal with the Samaya.

I completed the online booking form and, in the comments, explained our problem with the Hyatt and reason for moving. We returned to the Hyatt and went to bed, ready to move the next day. What we didn't expect was our hotel phone in the Hyatt to ring at 9.30am the following morning.

Me: "Hello?"
Ray: "Hi Mr Edwards, this is Ray Clark, the general manager of the Samaya. I'm so sorry to bother you at this early hour but I have your booking here and I just wanted to say I'm so very sorry of your experiences at the Hyatt. I am, however, delighted that you'll be joining us later today. How are you getting here?"
Me (half asleep): "Err, we'll be getting a taxi"
Ray: "Nonsense! I won't hear of it! We'll send a car - I'm not having you ripped off by any dodgy driver! He'll be with you for 11am, is that ok?"
Me: "Thank you!"
Ray "It's my pleasure! I promise you my staff and I will be fully at your disposal and promise to give your wife and yourself a honeymoon to remember"

... and so started out love affair with The Samaya. At 11am the luxury minivan and unformed driver picked us up and whisked us away from the hell on earth that is the Bali Hyett.

We arrived at The Samaya about 30 minutes later, and things simply got better and better. The villas are split across two locations, separated by a road. It takes 2-3 minutes to walk from one side (the beach side) to the other, which contains newer villas and this is where we wee staying. Having said that, you don't actually walk between the two sites - that's what the golf carts and personal butler are for.... I joke not!

On arrival, we were greeted by Ray and a number of staff. The welcome was wonderful, and we immediately new we'd done the right thing. During check in, Ray explained the facilities - the site we were staying on was newer with a gym, pool and brasserie, perhaps housing 20 or so private villas. The place has an almost Mediterranean style to it, narrow little paths and high white washed walls. As the paths are too narrow for cars to path, a fleet of golf buggies are on hand to whizz you back and forth the restaurant, pool, beach and so forth. You could walk any of it in 2 minutes, but this is absolute luxury.

Ray took great pains to explains that the original 'beach side' villas were in the process of being rebuilt (having been demolished earlier that year) as part of a regeneration process and, whilst it shouldn't have any impact on our enjoyment, he wanted to assure us that, should we have any problems, we were to let him know immediately. He needn't have worried - although the main pool, 'Breeze' restaurant (by far the best we tried in Bali), beach and spa were all on the same side as the regeneration works, we heard and saw nothing to suggest of building works, as all had been cleverly screened off (you can see the green fence in our photographs). We stayed back in May (I'm only just finding time to write the review) so, by the time you visit next, this work may be now complete!

We were then shown to our villa....

OH... MY.....GOSH!!

The villa left us speechless with delight. We've stayed in some nice places in our lives but this was simply extraordinary. A huge private pool, beautiful living accommodation, whirpool bath, twin monsoon showers with wet room access to the pool and garden, covered decking area, complimentary mini bar (including beer and a complimentary bottle of sparking wine!), honeymoon cake, complimentary dry cleaning, use of car to drop you and pick up from Seminyak... It was simply incredible. The icing of the cake was a 'butler' on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - there seemed to be two or thee chaps covering our villa and they were simply phenomenal.

Further to the above, we discovered our rate included a complimentary spa session for each (we had the most delightful massage) and breakfast.... a breakfast to die for. No buffet here - a full a la carte menu, serving the most delicious food, and no cut off time - on at least two occasions we took a full breakfast at gone mid-day. Fantastic, I've never know this in all of my time travelling, either for work or pleasure. Fresh fruit and in-room cakes or treats daily. Complimentary airport transfers and VIP airport treatment sealed the experience.

Our week in the Samaya was over far too quickly. We're simply not accustomed to staying in such luxury - and we've stayed in some nice places (see our reviews). Yes, it's expensive but my gosh, you do get what you pay for.

Although we had the most wonderful honeymoon, I wasn't itching to get back to Bali like I am when I think about, say, Singapore or Thailand - that was, until we stayed in The Samaya. We will definitely be going back at some point - it was truly heaven on earth, and we can't thank Ray and his staff enough for the most wonderful end to a wonderful honeymoon.

For the first time ever, I find myself wishing TripAdvisor could give 6/5 !

This was our first stay at Samaya having always been loyal Legian fans. We are a family of four (children 7 and 6) and are used to paying for quality holidays. We like the Four Seasons in Langkawi and Al Qasr in Dubai.
Our first impression was mixed as although the beach setting is stunning, the poolside villas are being renovated and we were therefore staying in a villa across the road in the club setting.
The villa was very nice though not overly luxurious (practical tile flooring and generally sparse decor with mediocre bedding luxury) but the gym and communal pool area were spot-on.
The overwhelming aspect of the Samaya that ensured our holiday was fabulous and made us loyal clients was the staff.
Not only were they constantly friendly, discerning, professional and helpful but they had the relaxed and assured way that comes with confidence and pleasure in being part of a great team under Ray.

Thinking back to a morning that involves a jog along the stunningly natural beach and returning to what must be one of the best breakfasts available anywhere is a great feeling and we look forward to the chance to return.

We stayed at the Samaya for 5 nights during our honeymoon in Bali and absolutely loved it. We stayed in a one bedroom Royal Courtyard villa. The villa was huge, the big bed very comfortable, and having such a great sized private pool was a real treat. When you didn't want to sit by the pool in your room, there was never a shortage of sunbeds elsewhere, our favourite being the decking overlooking the beach. There you were treated to cold water, cool flannels, facial spritzes, fruit cocktail etc.

The service at the Samaya was always fantastic, the staff couldn't do enough for you. If you wanted breakfast in the gazebo by your pool it arrived very quickly and just as hot as it did in Breeze. One evening I sent by husband towards one of the bars for some ice - he was intercepted en route and sent back, with the ice arriving a few minutes later! The little treats in the room every night are great as well.

We were very impressed with the food at the hotel. Breakfasts were really, really good. We only had lunch once because we were too full from breakfast, but the lunch we did have, a wagyu burger, was yum! For dinner, the Indonesian restaurant was lovely and Breeze was probably the best meal we had in Seminyak. For other dinners, we went to La Lucciola which was also really good, Chandi which was less so and a great and very good value Japanese called Ryoshi. We also went for a great cocktail at Ku De Ta at sunset (similar in price to the cocktails at Breeze but a little bit better we thought).

Don't hesitate to book at the Samaya, we would go back tomorrow if we could!

The best location in Seminyak area , walking distance to good restaurants in Oberoi street and beach clubs like Kudeta and Potato club or night clubs like Hu'u bar and Living Room , well designed comfortable villas , good and friendly staff , need to work on their menu for both in room dining and in their famous restaurant "Breeze",
Hopefully the renovation will finish soon , will always be my first choice in Bali.

Our whole experience at The Samaya has always been truly amazing! It starts with breakfast at Breeze facing the beach. Breakfast is always sumptuous and would last us all day! It's almost impossible to think of lunch. We love lounging by the chair afterwards - looking out to the beach, watching people play kite, and would then play with the waves which are only meters away (we rented boogie board this time). The staff are so friendly, pleasant, and will always give the extra efforts to serve us. Tea time is always enjoyable. The scones and sandwiches are delicious! The villa is always clean, because the staff will make sure to come and change towels, etc. There are always a little surprise in the room such as chocolates, cookies, and local fruits which are waiting on the table. The soda cans on the fridge are free. Oh, the whole premise is provided with wi-fi! Make use of the free ride around the Seminyak area.

Room Tip: The villas by the beach front or near are best!
