The Samaya Bali Seminyak
Ranked #6 of 148 Hotels in Seminyak
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 6 September 2009

The Samaya is well deserving of it's top 100 hotels in the world and it's numerous trip advisor awards. This Hotel is a real gem where luxury comes as standard.

The hotel lobby and grounds are beautiful and pristinely kept, and the rooms are huge, with quality furnishings. The villa's are completely private and not overlooked with every amenity you could ever need. We stayed at the newer royal courtyard villas and whilst they are over the road, you get taken by golf buggy everytime and it is well worth the buggy ride for the bigger pool that you have.

The staff are fantastic and can't do enough for you, they helped us with everything from recomendations for restaurants and bars to lifts to and from places. Their attention to detail is a sign of the quality of the whole resort. The hotel restaurant (breeze) is fantastic for breakfast on the beachfront but also for evening meals aswell and you can see why it is renowned as one of Bali's best restaurants. The Spa is also fantastic and whilst expensive is well worth the money, my wife had the warm oil massage and raved about it for days. We also went river rafting which was good fun and lasted a couple of hours even though it is a nice steep walk down to the river, the lunch is good and the scenery is very nice along the way.

We went to the managers cocktail party and really enjoyed it, meeting with the staff and having a good chat with them. It is also here where we found out about some little nuggets of venue's to visit, among our favourite's for food were Dahana (Japanese), La Lucciola (Italian) and Gado Gado (indonesian). For drinking at sunset, Ku De Ta is packed and good to chill out for an hour or so, also Sunset On Seminyak is good with some nice cocktails on offer. For later on Huu Bar and living room are good and both are only a couple of minutes walk from the hotel. There is plenty of choice though and with Taxi's being so cheap it is a better idea than walking - these are negotiable fares though so best to agree a price or ask for them to use the meter.

all in all we had a fantastic honeymoon at the Samaya and in Bali generally and would thoroughly recomend it to anyone, we intend like many others to return which is further proof of the quality in this resort.

We booked the Samaya given how fantastic the reviews are on a few travel websites and also on word of mouth. This truly is a superb hotel. The grounds are gorgeous and the food is excellent. It is pricey but that is what you expect in this area and in a hotel of this standard. We stayed for 8 nights and got to know the staff. Ray, the friendly General Manager, makes sure everyone is enjoying their stay and adds a personal touch to the service. We had dinner at the Oberoi and went over to neighbouring Legian and I would certainly stay at the Samaya over these 2 hotels. Service can be slow over busy periods - this is the only fault I could find over 9 days here. Definitely try Sarong for dinner down the road for excellent Asian fusion.

We had a lovely stay in our Royal Courtyard villa. Wifi worked well, something a lot of hotels can’t boast. It had everything you’d ever need but if you thought of anything else it would be there in a mo. My daughter loved the tv in the bath room! The rooms were immaculate but never did housekeeping intrude. In fact the only time we saw them was to say hello to in the lane. The only thing you could mention is that the blinds into the bedroom let in lots of light so if you’re a light sleeper you’ll awake early – although we found that to be an advantage as it makes you make the most of the day! The little carts would pick you up or run you back, never did we wait more than a couple of minutes.

Breezes was a dream, just amazing sitting there (plenty of tables in shade if that’s what you like) watching the ocean. The breakfasts were lovely, from a menu with lots of choice and served at any time. Alterations were not a problem, they were happy to oblige, which was a god send as it seems my 14 year old daughter can’t live if she doesn’t have chocolate sauce on her pancakes! Mid morning we’d receive an ice cold fruit salad whilst lying around the pool – always seemed to turn up just when you needed it! Then between 3 and 6 you could request afternoon tea, which consisted of some ‘delicate’ sandwiches, scones and a cake with of course tea or coffee. This was a real delight, only something small but my husband still asks for it now and we’ve been home a fortnight! Diner was of high quality and again if my daughter made a request for something ‘plain’ no problem and was done with a smile.

At night the hotel was lit up with candles and lights, it became a magical place – especially with the sound of the crashing waves at Breezes for a late night coffee and port.

The main pool never seemed to have more than a couple of people in it surprising considering it was August. The pool at the Royal Courtyard site never seemed to have anyone in! Although the sea was so inviting that if it wasn’t a red flag (we were there during a dark moon so the waves were large and something bewitching to behold) you’d be in that. My husband never got to move a bed or a umbrella as the pool boys were there before he could start and although busy some days we never had a problem getting beds. I spent ages just staring across the beautiful beach and into the sea. Not a jet ski or banana boat in sight – wonderful!

There are a few ‘sales persons’ that walk up and down the beach and a few umbrellas to rent with a fruit & water stall just to the left of the Samaya but it or them didn’t intrude.

The SPA is lovely and the girls excellent. The only sad part is that although it’s in a beach front position in front of it are the stalls and umbrellas I mentioned above. So the high windows are shut and you don’t get the sea breeze or sound of the waves crashing during your massage – although thinking about it I never asked if they could be opened just presumed they were shut because of what was directly outside? The prices are in line with most high class hotels in the Far East.

However best of all were the staff. They were friendly yet professional nothing was too much trouble. Everything was so seamless, we never waited for anything and that thinking about it probably takes a lot of hard work and practice.

So although it would be better if the villas were all on the same site we can’t wait to go back.

We spent 4 nights at Samaya from Aug 24 to Aug 27, and wished we could have stayed longer. We actually tried to postpone our departure to Singapore, but both Samaya and Samaya Courtyard were unfortunately full :(
What makes Samaya very unique, besides its beautifully manicured grounds, lush greenery (we live in the Middle East, so we do appreciate), large pool and sun loungers, comfortable villas with all the amenities and privacy one can dream of, and wonderful sunsets from the sundeck while sipping great drinks, is the dedication, professionalism and kindness of Samaya team: from its butlers to waiters to pool attendants to spa therapists and to all other staff, “impossible” does not belong to Samaya’s vocabulary. Whether you stay for a few days or a few weeks, Samaya makes you feel special. We have been traveling extensively in Asia, and stayed in numerous 5* or equivalent, but for the first time I decided to share my feedback on Tripadvisor.
Interestingly enough we came from another 5* in Seminyak (Anantara), which we found overrated in many aspects and lacking the soul that makes Samaya stand out.
Just a few other things to appreciate: enjoying breakfast at Breeze with classical music in the background; villa cleaning and turn-down service which take place while you are having breakfast, drinks or dinner; fantastic treatments at The Spa, impeccable food and service at Breeze, discrete security (folks don’t check you every other minute once they figure out you are hotel guests); albeit the hotel was pretty full it never felt crowded and last but not least, the wonderfully refreshing kindness of Balinese people.
If you are looking for 5* hospitality redefined, Samaya is a special place to go. We’ll be back to Samaya for a special occasion and for a longer period this time !

We spent 3 nights at the Samaya at the end of a two week honeymoon in Bali. It was truly fantastic and we just cannot wait to go back. We stayed in a garden villa because we preferred to be beach side. Service was faultless, the spa is excellent (yes expensive, but we also had loads of super cheap treatments in other places so were happy to splurge here) and the restaurant is great too capped off by the beachside setting. I actually feel the hotel is worth every penny with all the little extras they offer, afternoon tea, fruit salad by the pool at lunch time, cold towels etc.. We felt totally pampered. Loved it!

My wife and I have just returned from The Samaya in Seminyak, Bali. Our stay was heavenly and we will remember the sunsets from the sun lounger, after afternoon tea served by the pool, for the rest of our lives. The Samaya staff could not do enough for us and were lovely in the manner in which we were treated. Such kind and smiling faces and each would admit that it was their pleasure to work there. As soon as you arrive you will know why.

From the Bose system for your ipod in your private villa, to the fresh fruit and pastry's delivered to your villa every day, the attention to detail is amazing. The breakfast is served at any time in the day (The Breeze Benedict is the finest meal I have woken up to!) and lunch or dinner is taken overlooking the beach. You can rest assured that this will be a wonderful rest that you will convince yourself you deserve! Enjoy and let the good times roll, personally we cannot wait to go back.

Just returned from 8 days at the Samaya. It was our first trip to Bali and we researched all lodging options to death, finally settling on the Samaya. Cut to the chase: it was everything we hoped and more. Property is beautiful and impeccably maintained; villas are lovely, well-designed, and kept spotlessly clean; location is excellent: right on the best stretch of beach and walking distance to "downtown" Seminyak yet far enough away to be quiet. The property is a really good size: small enough for staff to remember you, and never to feel crowded, but big enough to have all the amenities you'd expect from a larger hotel. Staff and services are top-notch, with lots of small touches that make guests feel really pampered (like bikes for guests' use, free car service in the Seminyak area, and a selection of books and magazines by the pool/boardwalk). An added bonus: the hotel's restaurant (often a throwaway gesture on many properties, designed for utility rather than quality) was so fantastic that we stayed on property for dinner 3 times - highly unusual for us. (Menus for both breakfast and dinner include authentic Indonesian options, another nice touch.) A final note: the staff takes great care to control insects on the property, so it was mercifully free of mosquitoes - no small blessing in this tropical locale.

One more comment that I think illustrates the soul of this property and its staff: Our Bali adventure initially was intended to have two parts - first, the Samaya and second, another property elsewhere on the island. When we had to flee the second place (which turned out to be a disaster), we called the Samaya in desperation and, even though they were technically booked (it's the height of busy season on Bali), General Manager Ray Clark and his staff found a way to juggle rooms so as to squeeze us in for the remainder of our holiday. It's no overstatement to say that they saved our vacation.

We can't recommend the Samaya highly enough - and can't wait to return.
