“Perfect honeymoon destination”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2010

We booked the 3-night honeymoon package (then 2 extra nights) in a private villa in the Courtyard. The villa was huge, with a massive pool, amazing bathrooms and decor. The butlers and other staff were fantastic at all times and there were loads of lovely touches (champagne, flowers everywhere, cakes etc.) The spa and restaurant are excellent and the view at sunset overlooking the Indian ocean on the terrace is amazing. Finally, Seminyak itself is a lively, cool place with good places to eat (Chandi especially) and Ku De Ta is a short ride in the compimentary hotel car, or a stroll down the beach. Read the bill carefully (it's frighteningly expensive), but don't let that put you off - an amazing hotel.

We stayed at this resort when it was the Santika Villas and were absolutely delighted with it . It has only improved since then. There are two parts to this resort: the original villas beachfront and a modern addition across the road. The new buildings are over the top comfortable and equipped with all the latest Bose, Ipod etc etc but we opted for the more romantic beachside villa. Fantastic staff, excellent restaurant, perfect location within walking distance of everything.

The staff from the manager down were so welcoming and helpful. Our villa was very comfortable, with fabulous bed and linen etc. We could have been in heaven sitting at the Breeze restaurant and looking out at the ocean eating sensational food! The free transport locally was a great thing for us...also the fabulous afternoon tea!

The combination of the hotel and the location (in Seminyak) was for us the best!! We loved Seminyak and the hotel was even better. What an excellent service and what a gorgeous villa we had in the courtyard of the hotel. We definitely go back when we will go to Bali sometime in the future!!
Restaurant the Breeze is also excellent, for dinner and for breakfast. No buffet at all, just a la carte and very good quality.

We spent 4 nights at the Samaya for our honeymoon, I had read all the tripadvisor reviews and was very disappointed.

Pros - perfect location on the beach and well-located in Seminyak, large swimming pool, free shuttles to Seminyak, pleasant hotel staff, large, clean and comfortable villas and some generous nice touches such as complimentary laundry, mini bar, fruit and afternoon tea by the pool.

Cons - the Royal Courtyard villas do not have any character outside and ours was overlooked by a huge grey building. We did not use our villa pool once as the outdoor area was not scenic and the grey building (tall and closeby) was too ugly and offputting. The view from our bed and villa was of this building. We asked for our waterfall feature to be turned off at night and on two nights we needed to keep asking, on one night it just didnt happen at all.

The service in Breeze was terrible and the breakfasts were good/ok but not as "outstanding" as some of the other reviews suggests. Breakfasts at Uma Ubud and the service there was far better. One morning I needed to ask for a plate, knife, spoon, glass and for the table to be cleared. I ordered a fritatta which was so heavy and overcooked it would have broken my foot had I dropped it. We both dreaded breakfast as the service infuriated us. I complained on this particulary bad morning and the waitress apologised and was clearly sorry but I am sorry to say it was not up to scratch.

We ate once at Breeze in the evening and the service was also terrible (wine arrived after the entree and then only after chasing, long gap between courses) and the food was tasty and offered lots of promise. However my fish dish was very undercooked so I sent it back, it took 30 minutes to return and my husband had finished his meal by then. No apology was offered and the meals and service charge were all charged in full when we were obviously unhappy. The prices at Breeze are high and not justified by the meals we had. Worst meal in Bali, we ate at Gado Gado twice and at La Lucciola next door and both offered a more positive experience overall.

The bar service at sunset from Breeze was very slow on each of the 4 days we were there. One evening my husband's drink took nearly an hour to arrive (after chasing several times), another evening mine didnt arrive at all. The staff smile and say sorry but still dont bring the drinks/bring them any quicker. It is infuriating but on the upside the sunset views are great.

The spa is beautiful inside and the menu is varied and well-priced. However I went on two occasions and both times the therapist immediately at the end of my treatment (and whilst I was still lying down) tried to get me to re-book or to sell oils. It was far too pushy and innapropriate, I thought the first time was just a bad experience but the second time I realised it is their sales format. I dont expect to pay for a relaxing treatment and then to be woken up with sales talk. Not good. The treatments also felt a little rushed and the hot stone massage was not great - stones too hot and the treatment made quite comical by the therapist repeatedly dropping the stones on the floor and apologising for the noise.

The sun loungers need to be replaced or recovered. Many of the cushions are badly stained with sun cream etc and the towels are old and shabby. It doesnt feel "luxurious" or 5 star sunbathing on other people's stains. Sorry but there it is!

I put most of these comments on a guest feeback card during my stay so that hopefully somebody would come back to us and offer us an apology. Unfortunately nobody did whilst we were there and this irritated me at the time. I have since received an email from Ray the manager apologising for our experience and explaining that he had been away whilst we were there hence we had not met him and he had not been able to address our concerns. He said he would take up the issues I had raised and he was already aware that the views from the Courtyard Villas could be improved. It was a shame that the manager was away when we there (you only get one honeymoon after all) but I think I voiced enough concerns whilst we were there for the acting manager or senior staff to have addressed them. Perhaps for a honeymoon I wanted everything to be perfect and so my expectations were off kilter however too much just was not as good as we expected. Dont get me wrong this is a nice hotel with lots of positives but having read the reviews, at times, I thought we were staying at a different hotel to the one in the exceedingly good reviews on tripadvisor.

Firstly, a belated thank you to Ray and all the staff at the Samaya. We had already spent 3 weeks in Bai and 1 in Thailand (for our wedding/honeymoon) before heading back to Bali and the Samaya. It was the icing on the cake for the honeymoon and our month away.

Ray greeted us upon arrival and his warmth made you feel like a celebrity walking the red carpet (thanks Ray). The villa we stayed in and the decorations arranged for our honeymoon were nothing short of memorable. The room service was like nothing we had experienced - even compared to 5 star in Thailand.

The restaurant and facilites also deserve a 10/10 - spectacular. Our Villa, on the 'other/new side of the road was breath taking, from the double shower with wooden decking floor, the large canopy king size bed, the enormous garden area with water fall pool and modern gazeebo....... We will be back. Oh and did I mention the 24 hour a day gourmet breakfast.....!

Thanks again to all the staff at the Samaya for making our honeymoon so memorable.

Regards
Bobbie-Jean and Shane

I spent a couple of times during 2007-2009 at this utmost outstanding resort.
The location is my most favourable one in Bali, the place is called Seminyak.
What is outstanding with The Samaya?
- Shoreside Dinning in green gras next to the sand, illuminated by thousands of lanterns
- Shoreside Breakfast at the same place, a la carte breakfast!
- Sundowner at the seafront lounge sofa
- Massage parlor with excellent therapists and view on the see

Regarding accomodation you have to go for an important decision.
- If you want to be close to the beach and the main resort, you have to choose the older villa resort, less high tech equipped, smaller, smaller pools
- If you want to have the most luxury villas, you have to stay across the beach road in their second resort, not at the front row, connected by golf cart shuttle. Location is for shure not as good, but therefore the villas have a huge own pool with waterfall each, terrace, pavillon, and high tech equipment like whirlpool with own lcd-tv, couple shower with two sprinklers, Bose sounddeck to connect Ipo etc.
