The Dusun
Ranked #9 of 148 Hotels in Seminyak
Reviewed 31 December 2013

We recently stayed 9 nights at The Dusun, three adults and two young children. We were in Bali in April this year and viewed a number of 3bdrm villas for this trip and found the Dusun the best (actually we slightly preferred the sister hotel, the Kunja but the location wasn't great for us). We found it excellent value for money. We are currently in a different villa in a different area and are so disappointed that we had originally decided on two locations!

The Dusun was everything it promised and more. Even though all the villas were booked, we did not hear noise from any other villa and you could barely tell that anyone else was staying there. The staff were excellent. Breakfast was quickly cooked and served and housekeeping efficient.

The villas themselves were great. Good lounge area, great pool. Everything very clean and well maintained. It isn't the newest property but we found that this wasn't a problem at all.

Location was good if you want to hang around Seminyak. Oh, and loved the little shop near security, nice touch. The area, and perhaps all of South Bali is so ridiculously busy at this time of year that you need to be prepared to add on much time if you are wanting to go outside the area.

Usually I write quite long reviews but I have nothing much else to say. It was the best villa we have stayed in through all our trips to Bali. If we decided to return to Seminyak would absolutely return. Was talking to another couple in Seminyak who also happened to be staying there and they said that the Dusun was always consistent.

I will make one suggestion though. The edges of the inside lounge get very slippery from the pool. Especially if it rains, which it did heavily. We bought some non-slip mats and used these. It would be useful if The Dusun had some on hand, it made a difference.

I am totally surprised that the Dusun in the top 4 hotels in Seminyak up there with the iconics such as the Semaya and Oberoi. Having stayed at the Oberoi and the Semaya, the Dusun is in no way in their league. One has to wonder how the Dusun Villas have achieved such a rating! I found that the villas are small, old and badly furnished. The shower/bath water smells very bad and so do the towels. The place is badly fitted with showers not reaching into the bath properly - you had to see it to believe it. On top of everything, I know that there are mosquitos in Bali and every place supplies coils and spray - but these villas are just infested. I booked 6 nights at approx 350/400 US per night for a one bedroom villa and checked out after two nights (losing the balance of the booking fee) which was a small price to pay to get out of the place.
I have stayed at some fantastic villas and hotels in Bali in all sorts of price ranges - this is certainly the worst!

We stayed in Villa 7 (3-bedroom) for 4 nights.
We have compared a lot of villas before and after making the booking, and even visited many of those places but we have not found anything 3BR better than The Dusun -at least in the same price category.
The wow factor in the villa belongs to the pool and the beautiful garden around it. It was extremely clean and well maintained, of decent size, with a pool fence all set up as we had a young kid.
The kitchen was also spotless. Yes it does not have branded stoves or amenities, but it is practical and more than sufficient for a family vacation. Each bedroom is of good size, has its own big bathroom, a walk-in closet and very comfortable air-conditioning. Beds are big and super-comfy.
The dining area is extremely spacious, equipped with ceiling fans. I would have preferred an indoor seating and brighter lighting in the dining area but that is about the only thing on my wish list. In the tropical weather sometimes you see a couple of spiders and small insects but nothing that really bothers even a city person like me.
Breakfast is plentiful, and there is a wide selection from nearby famous eateries that you can choose from on your room service menu. They serve afternoon tea too, but the snacks are too sweet for me.
The location is perfect, with walking distance to the beach, the puras, and cafes and the hip shops. Seminyak Square is literally 3 min's walk away but you dont get any of the noise.
Tips: keep your bedroom doors closed so that mosquitoes dont go into your room; bring your own shaving kit as they dont provide.
We would love to come back every year!

I have stayed at many 5 star villas in Bali. The Dusun is certainly not the newest or most modern,
But definitely it is in the best location and you want for nothing. The staff are lovely and can not do enough for you. I love that you can put the do not disturb sign on door and you have a very private villa. I would definitely recommend it to anyone, especially if you love Body works and grocer and Grind, you can't get a better location.

We spent 2 nights at this hotel which is the true and original Seminyak. The tag line “beyond expectations” is what you can expect.
The 12 villas are simply amazing with their own pools. The beach is located about 100m from the hotel which makes it very convenient to walk to.
The hotel does not have a restaurant but rooms come with breakfast where they come to your villa and make and serve the breakfast.
For dining inside the hotel in the comfort of the villa, they have made arrangement with selected outlets within Seminyak where we order the food and food is delivered to your villa. There is also a shuttle to drop you within Kuta.
I will certainly come back again and recommend this to my friends and family.

The staff were wonderfully helpful, cooking our breakfast & serving afternoon tea each day in our beautiful villa. The pool was glorious & our private garden so relaxing. Highly recommended!!!
