“Great resort for diving!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2013

Great resort! We stayed there in May for the Open Water diving course and we couldn't have picked a better place to learn to dive. Firstly, the communication with the hotel was excellent; we received fast and clear replies with no hassle. Always a good indication of the rest of the services a hotel provides. We were picked up from the airport and since the drive to Tulamben is about 3 hours from the airport in Bali we had lunch in Candidasa. It's a long ride, but plenty to see on the way.

Our room was on the second floor overlooking the pool. The room was very spacious and it included a big balcony and a big bathroom (although a bit slippery when wet). Overall it was very nice indeed. From the front door there is a great view of Mount Agung. Basic breakfast at the hotel was provided. The staff overall was extremely friendly and nice. The only downside was the Wi-Fi, which was almost non-existent in the room.

We stayed there in total for 4 nights and started the training course right away. The dive course was amazing. We learned so much and our instructor Eric was fantastic and fun. He was patient, helpful and knowledgeable about all things diving related. After our pool training sessions we had 4 dives in the open water. Because the resort is located quite near the shore, we only had to walk a short distance to the diving location. It was quite convenient. The dives were great in their own right. Just a few meters below the surface is the infamous wreck of the USAT Liberty. For our first dives we went along this amazing wreck, saw tons of fish and also a large sea turtle. Not bad for a first dive.

This is a great place to stay for a few days and do some diving. Besides diving there is not much to do in Tulamben though, the town itself is somewhat quiet (I personally like that, but for some people it might be too much). There are a few restaurants down the road from the hotel, which offer pretty good food especially the Tulamben resort related restaurant. We loved the food there and came back a few times.

Will definitely consider coming back to take the Advanced Open Water course.

It's fantastic. Secluded. Green. Lush. Great infinity pool and sunrise. Staff attentive.

We went with our two infant children. I went scuba diving. We had the upper villa overlooking the ocean. Great deal for $75 a night. Lots of space. Clean. Lots of towels.

Downsides: No cable. Internet was poor. Breakfast was mediocre.

This wasn't the hotels fault, but diving (especially the wreck) was a little over rated.

Despite the downsides, we stayed two nights and were very happy.

Room Tip: Get the upstairs villa near the ocean. otherwise try and get on the ocean side. It's a bit of...

Nice little resort, the rooms are clean, aircon works, great view of the volcano agung from your room, would recommend a second floor if privacy is needed..had an all round good stay. bathrooms could use a little revamp for the price you pay, but the rooms are spacious and the stocked fridge is a bonus.

The dive centre had a nice set up but the staff could definitely be a little friendlier and more helpful, it is more expensive than a couple of places down the road, so I would have expected better service!

I how ever did not leave disapointed, the liberty wreck is a must dive..just rent a tank and go!

Visiting Bali on my own, I wanted to dive but required somewhere both good value and safe. The great advantage of Tulamben Wreck Divers Resort is that it offers a great dive facility and attractive accommodation on the 'beach' - in fact a sea-front of rocky volcanic rocks where you would not volunteer to swim, so the lovely pool is a great asset. In fact safety was paramount after I had survived an attempted bag snatch, scooter to scooter, in Kuta. The room was clean, had an open-air bathroom at the back but, sadly, was not sea-facing. Breakfast (included) was cooked to order, including freshly-pressed juices. Massage on offer from the lovely room attendants. The downside was that it is not centrally situated and so I needed to be collected and dropped whenever I wanted to dive, or even have an evening meal, although lunch - and even dinner I guess - could be delivered from the Wreck Divers restaurant, good and cheap at about $5 for a decent main course. The other downside: as an experienced diver I found the range of diving at Tulamben limited and not worth more than a couple of nights. There are way better dive sites in the region, but for a short stay if you are in Bali and a diver, this represents great value for money and the staff were extremely friendly.

I shared a room with my dad here. There was a large queen sized bed and one single which was fine for us. The room was large enough and comfortable enough. But the bathroom was not very nice. It was old and a bit run down. There was absolutely no water pressure in the shower and was not nice after a days diving to come back to a shower that basically only a few drops came out of.
We never ate lunch or dinner in the restaurant as the breakfasts were average and we preferred to explore and check out other places around us.
Location was very good and the staff were friendly, but I do not think that I would stay here again. I would choose somewhere that was located right on the beach with a nice restaurant/bar over looking the sea.

My husband and I booked TWD to do our PADI Open Water Ticket after reading all the good reviews here on Tripadvisor...
We were picked up from the Airport and driven to Tulamben in a new clean Car with AC. Its a 3 hour drive and a bit rough cause of the crazy drivers and the Roads in Bali. As we arrived in Tulamben we were driven to the Dive shop to check in and pick up our PADI book and DVD. We went to the Restaurant and had something to eat while the Driver waited for us with no problem. After Lunch we were driven to our Beachfront Villa, Villa 4 (about 3 min drive away from the shop) and they lend us a scooter with no extra cost to drive around.... We were a bit scared to drive around with the scooter, especially with no helmet but that wasnt a problem, the locals see that you a tourist and they are extra careful in overtaking you...

We have to say thats one of the best places we ever stayed, Villa 4 is facing the Beach and we fall asleep every night and woke up every morning to the sound of the Ocean, just wonderful. The Villa is in balinese style, very clean and has a open Bedroom with a King Size Bed, an extra single bed, Couch, table & chairs, TV and DVD Player (but no Dvds and no TV signal), Bathroom with shower, Safe, Cupboard, Fridge and Coffee/Tea facilities. The Pool downstairs is clean and has a beautiful view to the ocean...

The Breakfast is very good and made fresh every morning (Mixed Juice, Fruit Salad, Eggs, Bacon & Sausages, Bread with Jam or Honey, Coffee or Tea), we were the only ones staying at the Villa and the Staff was there every morning at 7:30 just to make breakfast for us... The Girls are very nice, friendly and helpful. We ate lunch and dinner at TWD Restaurant, the food is really good and cheap! We absolutely loved it and had everything from Juices, beer, starters, mains and desserts. We reccomend to try the Fish Tutu, you have to order it 1 day before, its a balinese dish, very good and very spicy. We also loved the banana/balinese pancakes! :)

But now to the diving... We didnt know what to expect doing our PADI Open Water in Bali but we were absolutely positive surprised! They gave us the PADI book and lend us the Dvd to watch and the staff was very nice and helpful! The first day we exercised and learned in the Pool, it feels very weird the first time and as you wouldnt get enough air but you get used to it and it feels much better in open water. The next day we had 2 dives at the Coral Garden, it was absolutely stunning and we saw 5 reef sharks and the following day we had another 2 dives at the USAT Liberty Wreck, also absolute stunning with a huge variation of fishes and we saw a big turtle. The Dive Sites are just a short walk over the road from the shop and a short distance from the beach, you practically walk in. Some Locals carry your Tanks and CBDs to the Beach on their heads!!! Crazy!!! All you need to carry is your fins and mask... Our Dive Instructor Wayan is an absolute Champion and made learn diving for us easy and a lot of fun! :) Thanks Wayan.

All the staff is very nice and great, we are really missing them... Especially the girls that massaged us every day! lol
Regina (one of the massage girls) has her own Saloon in Tulamben if you are interested in getting a haircut or manicure/pedicure... She offered us a Photoshoot in balinese traditional clothes and even my husband wasnt really keen, I absolutely did wanna do it as I love Photography. It was awesome, the make up, the dresses and the photoshoot! We love the photos and think of it as a great memory! Thank you Regina! :)

We cant wait to go back to TWD to do our PADI advanced Open Water and do a lot more diving all over the place. Thank you TWD for this great experience!

I haven't stayed at the hotel since 2005 so cannot offer an accurate review of the facilities there. However we have stayed at the Tulamben Wreck Divers (TWD) Villas on five separate occasions now. We have always stayed at the villa with rooms 7, 8 & 9. Each room is fully self contained with it's own a/c & ceiling fan, bathroom/shower, tv & dvd, small room safe, fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. The villa is very clean and the construction is 1st class. There is an i-Pod dock, books in various languages (mostly English & German) and a wide range of dvd's to choose from. There is a fully stocked kitchen for those who like to cook their own meals and a large common area overlooking the pool and lawn and the sea. If you were a couple with none or 1 child you could easily just rent one room but we have found that is much more enjoyable if you can get some friends together and rent all the rooms. There is plenty of room for children to play without overly bothering the grown ups. Prices are also very reasonable.
If you are flying in from outside of Bali there will be someone to pick you up at the airport and drive you to Tulamben. It has easy access to all of the local dive sites and the staff at TWD will be happy to cater to any of your underwater desires. Although they prefer you to use their own dive guides / facilities they are not against you using any of the other dive operators in the area. Alternatively the sea in front of the villa is calm (weather depending of course) and is perfect for snorkeling with lots of marine life to look at. It is safe with minimal surf and currents and even our 4 yr old daughter happily spends an hour or so snorkeling there. Stairs provide easy access to the water but care must be taken as the beach is made up of large, loose, round stones and it is easy to stumble if you rush.
The staff are wonderful and very unobtrusive. They will happily arrange anything you want and if requested, will obtain coconuts and freshly caught fish which they will then prepare or you can cook it yourself. In house massages are available upon request and the breakfasts are fit for a king - we have yet to finish everything.
Tulamben is not a place you go to if you crave for excitement. It caters mostly to divers and those who just want to relax, splash about in the pool/ocean, read a good book or just enjoy the view. There are plenty of warungs (small local restaurants) to choose from and a small supermarket type shop just opposite TWD maiin hotel to buy small supplies.
I always enjoy going to Tulamben but I love staying at the TWD Villas - I always feel relaxed and refreshed after a few days there and never really want to leave.
