“Best Hotel in Mawlamyine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 December 2013

We have a good sized corner room on the second floor with balcony (Emerald) and ironing board! Very comfortable and quiet room, the hotel staff are exceptional. This hotel is consistently highly recommended and with good reason, plenty of Asian visitors not just Western, but book ahead as invariably full. Food is OK but far from exceptional. As of 05/12/2013 an ATM has been installed at the entrance to the hotel.

PS just read a recent review from Singapore claiming discrimination against foreigners, ignore it, this person should not leave home.

Room Tip: Book ahead.

We really like light rooms. Our room had windows on 2 sides plus a balcony. Perhaps because of the relentless sun, many rooms in Myanmar are built with small windows or have heavy teak floors and are deliberately cast in shadow. With the airconditioner, we had the best of both worlds. The bathroom was fine and the food and service througout outstanding. We were barely checked in when a jug of boiling water was brought so we could make tea/coffee without waiting for our jug to boil. Compared with other rooms in Myanmar, this was the best value.

A wonderful hotel. The rooms are spotless and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They offer a big and very tasty complimentary breakfast in Their lovely diningnroom. In the rooms they provide complimentary water, coffee, and fruit. In the evening they even brought up a plate of fresh fruit for us to enjoy. In the lobby there are big guide books with photos of suggested itineraries, and a very secure locker for your personal valuables, should you choose to use it. The hotel is nicely docorated with interesting Burmese artifacts and is centrally located. EXCELLENT value for money. Highly recommend it.

We selected the Cinderella from the mostly positive reviews on Trip Advisor. Having visited Mawlamyiang several times over the years - the first visit being in the mid 1990's when there were only two pretty awful hotels - it was a pleasant surprise to find at last a good hotel. Of course the furnishings were a little kitsch with a 'hotch potch' of nice artwork and plastic pink and white striped curtains covering the doors but it was good value for money. The beds were large and very comfortable with freshly laundered sheets, the room had an iron and ironing board, lots of freebies including fresh fruit in the fridge and the laundry costs were next to nothing. The bathrooms are in need of updating - we hate wet floors - the plastic shower curtain was tearing away from the rings but we did have hot water from the power shower. One of us got caught during the shower when the power went off but luckily had finished soaping. Fumbling around for a towel in the dark was funny but not at the time! We found the restaurant excellent with good service and freshly cooked food. The breakfasts were excellent too. This was a treat for us as we had all suffered very bad food poisoning from a 'so called' luxury 5-star hotel in Yangon where we had stayed briefly in the first week of our visit and to which we are still suffering the affects of three weeks later. We did not have problems with rude receptionists however we did notice that one person who seemed to be in charge did give us wrong information about the opening times of the restaurant when she told us it would only open at 9.00pm when she meant it closes at 9.00pm! We were not very pleased as we were tired after a long trip and it was only 6.00pm so there was to be a long wait! In the end we did manage a light dinner when we discovered she had given us the wrong times. This could have been a misunderstanding and most likely a language problem. However, she did seem adamant at the time that this was the case even though we asked her to repeat the restaurant times.

Room Tip: Rooms close to the top have nice little balconies to sit out in the evening enjoying a beer. The vi...

Whilst this is not a beautiful looking hotel, it makes up for its purple exterior and kitsch furnishings with friendliness, cleanliness and a good location. The bathrooms are a little old fashioned but for $45 per night this is easily the best place in town. The breakfasts are legendary - huge and many courses.

Room Tip: The rooms at the top of the hotel (3rd floor) have balconies

Had a good stay at the Cinderella. It was probably our best value hotel. The room was spacious, bathroom was weird but cleaner than all the other places we had stayed. Good location and staff very helpful. The breakfast was the largest and most varied of all the hotels we stayed at. Shame they have carpet though. We enjoyed our stay here very much.

As hotels go in Myanmar, it's not bad. It's a little weird and colonial - the rooms have bad carpet, men rush to open the door for you as you enter, some of the staff wear white gloves. The rooms are big, there is a terrace, but carpet and bathrooms are grotty and for $45 a night in a random, very poor city, you would expect better.

The big problem is that there appears to be no senior manager on site, and so the place is run by two very vindictive receptionists who claim to be managers (I later discovered that they are not)

They gave awful advice - sending us out on a Saturday afternoon to an ATM that was 30 minutes away, despite it being common knowledge the ATM is closed on the weekend. They sent another guest to a jetty which no longer does boat trips - another fruitless 30 minute walk.

They were incredibly rude, making snide comments about guests and taking a perverse pleasure in seeing certain guests who were low on usable cash squirm. This in a town where there is a part time ATM which doesn't even work. When we decided we would complain about the rudeness of the receptionists, other staff members did their best to stop us from doing so. They told us the manager's mobile was engaged, and then a few minutes later that the manager was asleep (it was 8am).

The sad thing about Mawlamyine is that certain members of staff at Cinderella can be rude and mean because they are the only decent hotel in town and so higher end travellers have nowhere else to go. Hopefully some healthy competition will put paid to this arrogance.
