Although we didn't meet Prince Charming or find a glass slipper, we had a very comfortable 9 nights here. The room was big enough to spread out in, the water pressure was good, the fridge was stocked with water and drinks, and the A/C was very welcome after a day spent in Mawlamyine's sweltering heat. Our room had a small balcony with a view towards the large temple on a hill that dominates the town. The staff were attentive and helpful, helping us figure out the wifi (good), ready with a smile and greeting whether we were coming or going.
The decor is a bit overdone; every available inch of the hall walls and stairwell is covered with wood carvings, puppets, large plaques describing available day trips, nodding cat figures, clocks... you name it, it's there!
The dining room is reasonably priced, with white gloved waiters trying to fit all the many plates on the good-sized table. Breakfast of fried rice was better than the pallid toast and oily fried eggs offered as Western fare. We also appreciated the biscuits, thermos of hot water, instant coffee, and fruit plate provided in the room every day.
The hotel is located two blocks above the river front and within easy walking distance of a couple of restaurants and the BBQ stalls that spring up on the esplanade each evening at sundown.
Like everything else in Myanmar, prices are rising as investors and tourists pour in. We think the $50 US is a bit steep for what is on offer, but we'd come back again just for the smiles!
