We stayed there as a group of 6 adults, for 3 nights. The minute you arrive, Peter (Head Cook/Tour Guide/Everything) makes you feel 100% at home and a part of the ever changing family of guests and the kind people who work there. He speaks perfect english, and is always ready to help you make the most of your stay. As soon as we arrived we all knew that 3 nights was not enough. Freedomland, or "Chillin' Island" as we called it, is not a place to go if you want to party. Instead look at it as an amazing place to relax, go to the beach, eat amazing food and meet amazing people from all over the world. Stay at least 5 nights, it seems like a lot when you're booking it, but of our 3 week trip from bottom to top of Vietnam, Freedomland was equally the most memorable of the 7 cities/towns we stayed in. (I wish we had spent less time in the north and skipped Nha Trang all together in favour of more time in Freedomland).

Every night, Peter and his team put on a multi-course feast in which 30+ people from all over the world sit on one huge turquoise table underneath the stars and trees, and on top of the clean white sand. Did i mention cocktails? Hidden inside Rita's Bar (named after Peter's partner, the amazing, helpful, beautiful Rita) sit's Van Hai. Van Hai, or Van, had only been making cocktails for 2 months when we arrived, however he is an ace. Not only will he make you a perfect cocktail, but just spark up a conversation with Van and you'll soon find he is one of the most interesting people in the world. (If you write him a poem he'll be your best friend for life)

Inside the rooms, the beds are nice (with mosquito nets), the room itself is luxury in a beach-shack kind of way. The bathroom is nothing more than a toilet, basin and a coconut which turns out to be a shower head, but it's all clean and nice. There's no hot water, but don't worry, it's hardly cold, and after a hot day of whatever you choose to do, you quickly learn to love the refreshing blast.

I could go on for pages, but the bottom line is, this place is everything it says it is- and more.
And however long you choose to stay, book another night, you'll be happy you did.

Room Tip: Sunset room was great if you have a group of 4, it is actually 2 rooms which unlocks to one big suite.

I stayed here with a girlfriend and it was a unique experience.

The good:
Food is amazingly delicious and plentiful.
Communal dinners and breakfasts are a sweet experience.

The not so good:
It's not the cheapest place to stay
It's not very conveniently located to the beach or other conveniences.
The bedrooms have openings in the walls so bugs, frogs, and other creature will and do come into your bedroom at night so make sure the mosquito net is tucked in tight!

I think if I went back to Phu Quoc I would spend some of my nights here and perhaps stay in the more touristy part of town the rest of the nights.

Hi ssfOakland_ca,

Thank you for taking the time to write and thanks for pointing out how you enjoyed our food and community experience.

There are a few things that we should comment though, for the sake of other travelers.

1. We are very confident that we currently deliver the service and experience that matches our rates. We have a wonderful hard working staff that deserves to be well compensated and, of course, when you’re far from the town and the action products come more expensive.

2. Our location might be inconvenient for those who prefer to stay closer to crowded –low- budget touristy areas but perfect for those who are looking for some quietness and natural surroundings. During your 10 minutes walk from FL to the beach you can see the local houses, pepper plantation, sometimes you even find yourself in the middle of a whole bunch of cows, hehehe. After the walk you arrive to a 4km of practically empty sandy beach, unspoiled. It’s not possible to have secluded and touristy at the same time. We are also very clear about it before booking.

3. Yes, we are in a jungle-like area. As is no secret we do not have A/C so our rooms need to be opened enough for the air to flow. There are bugs and other animals, they do enter your room but it’s not dangerous. Hygiene is very important to us. Rooms are cleaned daily and inspected for creatures from the forest but we cannot control from a few bugs to enter later on. We also have lots of fruit trees which are an attraction for certain kinds of creatures such as bees, ants and squirrels. Normally we do not chase away frogs, most of our guests actually think they are lovely, and they do a great job in feeding from the bugs. There are also huge geckos (Tokay geckos), they are quite beautiful and love eating those unwanted bugs but if you leave food in your room for sure they will come and try something new! Nevertheless our team is ready, upon request, to chase away (not kill) anything that might bother our guests.

Thank you once again for your comments and we hope to welcome you again in the future.

Warmly,
Rita and Peter

If you stay at Freedomland long enough you'll feel like you're part of it - like a big family with new friends dropping in to stay all the time. Every member of staff was truly friendly and interested in us as people, making every effort to make our experience on Phu Quoc just right for us. We stayed as a family of 3 with our 13yr old son at the end of February. By the end of the week, he was helping to run the bar with Van Hai and eating lunch with Peter, Rita and her family whilst we went for beach walks!
We would totally support all the other 5star reviews of Freedomland. After a busy or chilled day, we always looked forward to amazing communal meals with up to 30 people eating food that would put some Michelin restaurants to shame. Each of 5-6 courses displayed great variety and radical artistry with exotic and original flavours without any heaviness. You could enjoy the food and still feel healthy! So many great conversations with people from all over the world and hopefully some friendships that will last.
We enjoyed an excellent introduction to scuba diving with Rainbow Divers, a great snorkeling tour, borrowed pushbikes to explore local communities & beaches, etc. Tigo, the dog, made a great guide to the beach and his girlfriend (Pipi?) produced 5 pups whilst we were there to the delight of our son, a budding Vet!
Our thanks to Peter, Rita, Van Hai and all the staff for giving us a really special final week of our trip to Laos & Vietnam. We miss you all as much as the place that you have created.

Do believe the good things that you read in these reviews. If you are a 'people person' and appreciate natural beauty, tranquility and enjoy good food then you can't do better! We found that this was a place where you were FREE to be yourself and have a truly great holiday.

Myself, my partner and nine year old daughter recently spent 14 nights at Freedomland during Febuary 2012. This was to be the last two weeks of a 5 week trip throughout Vietnam. We based our decision to stay at Freedomland on the high number of very positive reviews on tripadvisor. In short we were not dissapointed. What a lovely place. The ambience, the food and especially the people make this place special. Another review of a negative nature mentioned that their passports were held hostage! In fact it is a Goverment/ Police requirement for foreigners to do so. After 5 weeks in Vietnam we found this to be the norm. The food is a bit more expensive than some places. However, Peters style of cooking is more fusion than basic Vietnamese and coupled with the special ambience of the communal dinners I thought it was good value. ( Iwas charged full price for my meals. My partner and daughter ate vegetarian food and paid less). I initially thought that 14 nights at the same place for dinner would be to much and we were planning to occasionally dine elsewhere. We didn't bother. Whilst a couple of dishes were repeated over the 14 nights we thought the quality of the cuisine coupled with a special atmosphere was to good to miss. Another negative point raised was the isolation of Freedomland. On alternate days we hired scooters to check out the island or walked/cycled to Mango Bay to chill out. I can only say this 'isolation' was a positve thing compared to the resorts on Long Beach that are stacked together cheek by jowl. In closing a persons highest recommendation would be if they would visit the place again. Well I'm already checking out flights back to Phu Quoc. See you soon Rita Peter and Van Hai.

Room Tip: Book ahead if you can as the place is busy

We enjoyed our stay at Freedomland. The setting is very nice and has a really good vibe. The six course dinners that Peter prepares every night and that are served a large table together with all the the travellers that stay at Freedomland are awesome. Staff is very professional and helpfull.

Room Tip: Make your reservation some weeks ahead if possible. During our stay all bungalows were booked.
