Phu Quoc Day Trip with Finger Island and May Rut...

By the time i was on the island, it was absolutely forbidden to get into the park. Quite bad and sad. Some treks were proposed by agencies but they were not in the real NP which is located in the north/north-east of the island. The only way to have a glance at it was driving through the dirt road leading to Ganh Dau from the new "highway" that goes to Bai Thom (turn left at the junction - about 12 kms north of Duong Dong). On this dirt road, there was a typical fishermen village called Rach Vem at the kilometer stone number 12. There was a sign saying Rach Vem: 1,5 kms on the right. Get there for a walk. Then, when you will be back to the dirt road, you will drive through 10 kms of immaculate forest leading to Ganh Dau. Make few stops. Cut off the engine and listen for a while. You are in the national park.

No birds, no animals and too many 'rangers' on motor bikes! Billed as 'A walk in the National Forest' the 10 minutes or so on well trodden paths is certainly not worth the effort.

The road to get to the park is painful, even more than most other roads in Phu Quoc. Our tour guide walked us the first 600 metres and that was it! Boring!!! Do not waste your time. This is a joke.

We took a tour into the park to go kayaking on the river followed by a jungle walk. It was a fantastic day out, especially canoeing with no one else around and thick jungle along the riverbanks. We had a guide to take us on a short walk through the jungle which was impressive to see. The only downfalls were the cost (we had to pay for a private tour as there weren't enough people booked on our trip) and the lunch, which was very basic. We opted for a local tour company as money goes directly back into the local community.

My friend and I hired a private Xe Om for the day. The ride to the park was just as beautiful and relaxing as the park itself!

We walked a couple of km in before turning around, there doesn't seem to be an end point.

I highly recommend hiring a private rider for the day. Our hotel called up trust worthy and reputable guys. The rode at a moderate pace and were very helpful. The full day 9:30- 4:30 was 300,000 VND each. Defiantly with it! Don't know the guys name but his number is: 093 9230942. English is limited if you don't speak basics perhaps get your hotel to call.
