Mai House is everything SE Asian beach lodging should be. It is charming, sits on a beautiful beach and is affordable. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The restaurant is excellent - I was able to order Vietnamese dishes that weren't listed on the menu. In fact, I saw many guests of other resorts come to eat at the restaurant. The rooms are well appointed and charming. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, traveling on any budget.

Gerard told us, about three times, that the rate for a bungalow is 17$ per night. he even said the words one-seven.
when we had to pay, he charged us 70$ per night. my english is not the best, but i can understand one and seven and i definitely know the difference between seventy and seventeen!!!
becareful with mai house resort and don´t pay 70$ per night!!! you can definitely find much better bunglowas for that price. i would not pay more that 20$ for that kind of bungalows (only with fen, no fridge, stinky, ... and unfriendly manager).

never, never, never again!!!

We were really quite impressed with the Mai House Resort, but ended up cutting our trip short as the weather was diabolical.

We though the USD170 per night we paid for the two bungalows (one for my wife, myself and my infant daughter and one for my motherin-law) was too much. We were told it was the beginning of the high season, but found that very hard to believe - there were very few tourists or visitors on the island.

Apart from that, everything else form staff to the resort to it's location was very good. We arrived to no bar fridge i our room (none of the rooms have them) and had one within 30 minutes of asking. Upon seeing we had a travel cot in our room, we were moved to larger rooms without having to ask. The staff were able to organise motor bike hire and taxi hire. The food at the restaurant was very good (a good thing as we were resort bound due to the weather). The beach at the front of the resort was quite nice, but there is no pool.

We have been there two years in a row and love the value, the food, the beach (nicest in the area for the price), house staff is helpful, Gerard is delightful and fun, the amenities are fine (for what one is paying). I don't get the critical reviews posted here. We love it and would go back in a second. Gerard, keep doing what you are doing, and keep feeding the weather idol!

I know this is a business and has to make a profit but I’ve never stayed anywhere where I felt that everything was designed to maximise the amount of money that can be extracted from the guest. In fact we felt we were treated as sources of income, not as guests.

Good points: the property is nice and they have lovely, comfortable sun loungers. We stayed in two different villas. Both were attractive but also dark and gloomy. There are louvre shutters on the windows but they are not adjustable so keep the room quite dark. There are no insect screens and both of us were subject to countless mossie bites. The laundry costs were very high – we walked a few yards from the front gate where a family did all our washing for the price of one shirt at the hotel.

There is no fridge in the room which is another deliberate ploy to get guests to buy cold drinks at the hotel.

The beach in front of the resort is nice but it is not a private beach as suggested in a previous review.

The division between the bedroom and shower room/toilet is a small wall and no door, only a curtain. You are basically still in the bedroom when you sit on the toilet. If you are OK with conducting your bodily functions in such close proximity to your partner then you will be fine. If you prefer a degree of privacy this set-up may pose a problem.

We had an early flight to catch so asked if we could possibly have breakfast 10 minites earlier than normal. I have to say I was speechless when I was told an emphatic ‘No’. We went down and had something to eat anyway – as we had to return a cooked breakfast twice as the eggs weren’t actually cooked we didn’t feel like we were missing much.

Would we stay here again? Not in a million years.

The four of us were very sorry we picked this resort. While it has a nice beach and grounds the bungalows were terrible. No a/c or mini fridge, ants and bugs and bites, leaky roofs and the ceiling fan isn't enough to cool down to sleep. If you use the netting around the bed you don't get any air, if you leave it up you get bitten. The mattress is 3 inches thick on a slap of rock, almost unbearable. The free buffet every morning was off a menu with the same 8 items every day, 3 items are eggs, 3 are pancakes, 1 is yogurt and one is fruit. Never again.
