Nam Thanh Homestay
Ranked #5 of 17 Vinh Long B&B and Inns
Reviewed 1 March 2014

Situated conveniently close to the Am Binh to Vinh Long ferry, this is just what a Vietnamese home stay should be. The hospitality and helpfulness of the entire family almost defies description. Apparently nothing is too much trouble and there is an overwhelming wish that their guests should have a memorable experience.

Meals were memorable - you will cook your own first course (under guidance) - the other five courses will be prepared in the kitchens by the family. Breakfasts are also suitably substantial.

Bikes are feely available to explore the island but a morning visit to the markets in Vinh Long should be high on the 'to do' list. The ferry costs about $0.03 in each direction.

Just one note of caution - no hot water in showers or communal washing areas.

That said - if you find a better home stay on An Binh you will be very lucky and I would be very surprised!

Nice and cozy place in middle of fruit gardens. Found it to be a perfect place just to wind down and relax for a while.
The family always has a big smile on their face and the children will cheer everyone up.
Food is excellent and it's a guarantee that everyone will have their stomach full after the dinner!
With breakfast and dinner included, the price per night is a bargain too.
Highly recommended!

Staying here was very pleasant and relaxing. Owner is always in for a chat, his wife doesn't speak english but you always get a big smile. The food is really nice, specially the spring rolls. And you get more than enough. You can walk around the island or take the bike and get many "hello" from the children. The ferry to the island is 500 dong one way. You pay when you get off. Did the boattrip to the floating market but make sure you get there early. We went around seven o'clock in the morning and it was already finished. From the homestay to the market takes about 1,5 hour. You also go to a candy factory and a place where they make honey. Take a smaller boat for a while and then back in the bigger boat to the homestay. Like the other reviews the driver doesn't speak english so asking questions wasn't possible.

We have traveled through Vietnam and Cambodia for 3 weeks. Vinh Long was our second destination and we enjoyed it a lot. We arrived by bus, took a mototaxi to the city centre. We got caught by a woman from a different homestay on the island opposite centre. She told us a lot of attractive things about her place so we took the ferry and came to her place, she wasn' t there. We didn' t like it much...room was quite clean, but the house and around was very dirty, some rats around, kitchen didn' t look very clean... I was a bit sad, we took a bike (bad condition) and found Nam Thanh Homestay just about 400m from our homestay. This place looked much better, staff nice and better prize, so we moved. And we were happy! We stayed 2 nights, the prize was just 200 000 per person including excellent 5 course dinner and okay breakfast. Staff was very nice and helpful, we took a boat trip to floating market, which was nice...just the two of us and driver on the boat. You can also borrow bikes (quite good condition) and explore the island. There is also free wifi. The only minus might be cold water, which was okay, not much privacy in the rooms and 4 showers and 2 toilets for all the guests. But the homestay wasn' t completely full so it was okay. Really a perfect value for the money!!!! And the food was so good. The owner also helped us with the transport to our next destination, which was Chau Doc.

I stayed two nights. People are nice and cery helpful, food is good and their children are adorable. We also were allowed to take any bicycle we want to drive around the island. Boat trip was ok although our driver did not speak English. All in all a really good option, preferable to a regular hostel.

We spent two wonderful nights at Nam Thanh Homestay. We were very lucky as we were the only guests at the time (next day there was a group of 20 French coming). The sleeping arangementgs are very well, comfy beds, clean lining and towels. The water in showers is cold but it wasnt much of a problem for us. Only the owner speaks English but his family is very friendly and if you make a bit of effort you can interact with them well or play with the children. The dinner was superb, lots of delicious food. Breakfast was like everywhere else in Vietnam: baguette, omlet, jam. I love my breakfast so I think there is some room for improvement here, like more variety. And you have to be careful choosing a bike cause a lot of them has some damage or flat tires. We found a lot of peace there and had great opportunity to observe the life on the island. A trip to the floating market and coconut candy/ honey factory was interesting. Overall very positive experience.

Really can't speak highly enough of this wonderful homestay. Perhaps my friend and I were lucky as we had the entire place to ourselves, but it was so relaxing and such a wonderful setting.

Upon arrival we chilled out in the hammocks, you can help yourself to cold drinks from the fridge and mark what you've had on a piece of paper to pay on check out. We were then served the most incredibly fresh dinner of the best banh xeo we had ever tasted, with spring rolls, amazing fish, succulent chicken, soup and rice. The family, though not speaking any English, were wonderfully attentive and super friendly.

After a good nights sleep we were served breakfast and then took mountain bikes on a 3 hour cycle around the beautiful island. Full of lush greenery and fruit trees, we stopped for bargain coffees and had what seemed like every kid on the island running out to wave and say hello.

All this for the princely sum of 250,000 per head (plus drinks), could not believe the value and were delighted we decided to do this, would recommend to anyone.
