“Uma Restaurant in Punakha”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

After a few days in Pohjikba Valley our group of 4 returned to Punakha. It was one the group members birthday so we decided to celebrate at the Uma Restaurant. We were staying on the other side of Punakha about 30 minutes away (see hotel review).

Despite not being a guest at the Uma we were all made to feel very welcome. They have a great lobby/lounge area with excellent wifi connectivity. There is also an outdoor deck with nice views over looking the valley below.

The meals are prix fixe and offer 2 options. A western and bhutanese option. We had both and they were excellent, although a bit pricey at $80 per person including all fees and soft drinks.

I wish we had splurged and stayed at the Uma. The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating.

The new hotel in this location is on the hill side looking over farm land, rivers and mountain,The setting is enhanced by the architecture and terraces where you can enjoy a drink or meal.are lovely,as you would expect service was good and the effort to accommodate you wishes are met with a smile.
The rooms and bathroom s are modern and do have TV which comes from India and personally we found reading on the balcony with peace and the views more to our taste and in keeping with the setting
The restaurant was very good and the selection of asian and european food available was more than adequate and served with panache
Allin all a chic hotel to stay at

Room Tip: Views over the rivers facing the mountains

After a day of driving though twisty mountain roads ( a lot of which is being widened and is, therefore, bumpy and messy ) arriving at Uma Punakha is like finding a beautifully designed oasis of simplicity. There is not too much to do here but to relax and recharge. It's wonderful how doing nothing can feel so nice.

The staff are absolutely wonderful and welcoming. And having something cooling brought to you on the terrace as you take in the beautiful views of the valley is the kind of experience you'll want to savor.

Despite being only a year and a half old, the buildig is showing signs of wear, especially the woodwork with its peeling varnish. And, for the price you will pay to stay in paradise, the rooms are a little on the small side. The bathroom was not fabulous, with the showers a bit tight and lacking a soaker tub. Knit-picking, I know, but with a nightly surcharge exceeding $700, I paid for the privilege.

The hotel is one of the best in Bhutan and I love the hotel settings. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent. The room had a spectacular view. Massage was excellent. The only regret is I booked too late and could only stay one night. Welcome drink and check in at the lounge was great. A lot of small detail in the hotel that makes the stay a memorable one. Definitely worth going there.

Room Tip: Room 1 was the best

We have just returned from Bhutan and Uma by Como Punakha was the highlight hotel of our trip. It has wonderful views up and down the valley, outstanding food, with a choice of Bhutanese or International (both excellent).
Friendly, attentive staff, excellent Spa, and wonderful walks from the hotel. We particularly liked the walk up the hill behind the hotel, past the school, farming villages and to the monastery at the top with breathtaking views. Thank you to all the staff for making our trip so memorable.

We spent two nights here during our recent trip to Bhutan. We only splurged on luxury hotels for four nights out of our twenty night trip and two of those nights were at the Uma Punakha. It was definitely worth it. The hotel is beautifully done with lots of wood and glass. There are only eleven rooms, so the place is very quiet and relaxing. And, the staff was outstanding. Very helpful and friendly. The lodge manager, Thtamu, made a point to greet the guests and took the time to answer all our questions about the hotel. My boyfriend was in the hospitality business for years, so he had all kinds of questions about running such an upscale place in a remote area. The food was great and a welcome break from the traditional Bhutanese food we'd had at so many meals.

While the location is somewhat remote, the views are stunning. I would highly recommend the Uma to anyone looking to splurge a little while touring Bhutan.

Even though our stay at Uma was a very short one, we really enjoyed the hospitality. Being vegetarians, the staff were able to understand our needs and provided us the meals as per our specifications. Hope to enjoy your hospitality at other location.
