We stopped here because we needed the restroom, so we paid a small fee to enter (Not sure if we needed to or not but repect these places). The views from the parking lot are amazing and there is a short walk round the black rock (Lava) that is just under a mile long. It's well paved and easy to walk giving amazing views. If your driving past definitely worth a stop.

See the Malpais, 5 dollars for an entry fee and it's worth it!! There is a well maintained paved path I'm sure is about a mile long, but gets you right on the lava flow, nice wildlife too. You can even venture off the path on your own. 2nd time there and was just as intriguing as before.

The Valley of Fires is a really cool experience if you have never seen a lava flow. You can get up close and personal with it here. I was really impressed by the paved walkway and how accessible it is for handicapped/stroller use. For those who are a bit more daring, you can get off the path as well and climb around on the lava. The views are stunning with the desert landscape and the snow capped mountains in the back ground. We were fortunate enough to see many birds while we were there, but missed the lizards, snakes and mountain lions that are apparently around. We had just come from Carlsbad Caverns the day before and I actually enjoyed this place MORE. The only thing that kept it from being a "5" in my book is the lack of better facilities for the day traveler. The toilets were clean and the information center staff was very helpful. But, it would have been even better if there were a place to sit and have something cold to drink or a light meal. Just my opinion. Also, if you like taking pictures, you will want to come early in the day or later in the evening so the sun's glare is not so intense. We went in March, so it wasn't too bad. Great place for a geology lesson. Oh, and wear shoes you don't mind getting torn up if you get out on the lava. And bring lots of water!

We visited this site in October. The weather was cool enough to allow for an extended tour of the lava flow. A wheelchair accessible walkway winds through the lava field and signs explain the plants, wildlife and lava features.

From the site, the origin point for the lava flow can be seen. The flow is said to extend fro 40 miles down the valley. Very impressive site! Cheaper than a flight to Hawaii.

RV sites are available for camping. Away from it all...

We were in the area and stopped at this park (it was confusing because some material indicated that it was a state park and others stated it was a federally operated park). Because of the shutdown we could not enter but were able see some of the park and lava. There are ancient lave flows covering a wide area around here and can easily be seen from the road (Highway 138).
The park has a visitor center and some walking trails.
