“Absolutely Fantastic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2013

I came to Chama specifically for the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, and stayed here for two nights in September, and I will definitely be back. I arrived around 9 but my key had been left in an envelope for me outside of the office.

I stayed in Room #1. The room was clean and charmingly decorated. The coffee pot with coffee, hot chocolate, and various other items was a nice touch. With my windows propped open I could hear the noises of the engines hissing in the yards all night, and was woken up up the whistle early the next morning (which I was totally fine with).

It was rather chilly around this time of the year, so I totally didn't notice that there was no air conditioning. (I did make use of the heater though) The windows could all be opened and there was a fan, so I wouldn't have minded this at all had I been there in the summer.

The morning I checked out I had pulled my car around the front to load it, and it was covered by some sort of leaves dropped by the tree it had been parked under. The lady who was working at the desk was out watering the plants, and very kindly offered to hose off my car for me.

Was it great? Yes. Do I recommend it? YES!!!!

This was the perfect place for our family to stay prior to riding the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad recently. We booked two rooms and were delighted with both. The place has just the right mix of old fashioned while being perfectly comfortable, and the owners are very
accommodating. Just across the street is a picturesque old saloon and hotel whose restaurant serves the best pancakes on earth for breakfast, and you can just walk across the street to board the bus or train for the railroad ride.

We made reservations with the owner and she was beyond amazing. Full of helpful information and options to suit our needs for the trip to ride the train. Small child friendly and grandparent question ready. Perfect spot to stay.

This place is a real charmer: nine rooms in total and all overlooking the garden. The host runs a gift shop as well. On the positive side, all rooms have a different theme or personality. Spotlessly clean and comfortable, a nice strong shower with plenty of hot water. On the negative side the rooms do not have a telephone (although surprisingly cell reception in Chama is a solid 5-bars on AT&T - better than LA!), nor air conditioning. And the office locks up at 8PM.

All rooms have a window facing Fourth Street and therein lies the problem: Fosters Bar. The place where the locals go to lament their lost jobs, lost friendships, and their sorry lot in life. (Believe me I heard it all.) The bar stays open late (12:30++) and, due to New Mexico law, the smoking patrons occupy the front patio.

I'd recommend a room to the rear, else you will here the fighting, retching, and bottle throwing that you can stand. "Chama - the land AA forgot" is a possible motto.

On the positive side, the Station Inn is located between two fairly decent restaurants. For those taking the Cumbres & Toltec scenic rail excursion, you really can't beat the location: the depot is right across the street.

Will I stay here again? Absolutely - but bringing ear plugs and requesting a room towards the back this time.

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear will be away from the bar across the street. The building is old and the floors d...

We had driven all day from Carlsbad, and were looking for a place in Chama near the train. Ended up staying here, room was very nice and clean, area around the hotel was quiet, and near two restaurants. Stayed with wife and 6 year old grandchild, would not hesitate to stay there again. Bathroom was small, but everything worked great.

Rosa and team where great , the hotel which is open for the train season is of old style but all rooms face onto a lovely garden with humming birds and. Flowers really well looked after, near train so no driving , rooms are great with great shower hit and strong which you need after a day on a stream train, would stay again with no problem

Room Tip: Ground floor rom 7 was great

Oh, OK the title of this is hokey, but we really did like the Inn. There are only 9 rooms, all of which are individually decorated. This is definitely not a chain motel. There are 4 rooms on the ground floor and 5 rooms upstairs and no elevator. Chama is a very small town so the rooms, which all overlook a garden, are quiet and peaceful. It's not a deluxe place, but the owners and manager treat you royally. There's no air conditioning, but there is no need for it as the nights are cool and windows can be open. No breakfast on the premises, but right next door is the Boxcar Cafe which has breakfast and lunch. You'll find that the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is across the street and about a one minute drive to park there if you don't feel like walking. All in all a really nice inn.
