another traveler told me that when he referred to the restaurant as "Mexican" the young waiter pointed out they were Spanish, descendants of the original settlers from the 1600s. The food is very tasty and traditional NM fare.

After the Sunday services at the Santuario Chimayo we drove a short distance to this sprawling venue. Since we had reserved a table for 4 before the 10:30 am service we were promptly seated. Friendly and efficient service.
The food is typical New Mexico, long on chiles etc. and the portions are generous. The setting is gorgeous, nestled among very old trees and flora in this green valley. Very highly recommended but it is NOT gourmet dining. Still a very good value.

This restaurant is one of the places that we will take out-of-town guests. Take the Nambe exit for the High Road to Taos, then look for the signs for the Chimayo turn. As you crest the hill and gaze down into the small green valley surrounded by the dry and barren hills, you will probably wonder how anything could thrive in that small oasis...but you will be surprised! The village of Chimayo offers an experience of small town New Mexico while the food at Rancho de Chimayo will deliver hearty new-found favorites for you if you are a new-comer. The portion sizes is plenty - even for the person who has been sight-seeing and skipped a meal. Flavors are grounded in the history and location which you will realize as you slow down, relax and become a mindful eater. This is comfort-food from another culture. Beware of the chile if you are not used to it - ask the very friendly for it on the side and use them as resources if you are not familiar with the menu items. And..don't leave with out trying the prickly pear in either the iced tea or a margarita. Enjoy!

We went for an early dinner, and sat on the patio. The food was splendid- I had to carne adovada, while my wife had some wonderful enchiladas. We enjoyed them- including the sopapillas. The service was professional, and friendly. We enjoyed it, and will return- hopefully sooner than fifteen years!
