“The Real Deal”
Reviewed 30 June 2014 via mobile

Want to really taste northern New Mexico cuisine! This is truly the real deal. Don't miss the stuffed soapillas. The service can be spotty, but eating out on the porch is delightful.

“Wonderful lunch spot”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

We drove the high road to Taos to Chimayo and stopped for lunch. A wonderful ambience and great service! Someone else at another table ordered a drink that was a gorgeous shade of fuchsia so I asked the waiter and found it was a pear cactus lemonade. I ordered it and it was delicious, although a bit on the sweet side. We had a wonderful lunch of combination platters to try a variety of foods. I am a vegetarian and was thrilled to know they had veggie green chili and veggie tamales! The tamales were fabulous - lots of veggies and masa. I also had a burrito and enchilada that were smothered in green chili sauce and had a great flavor. My husband had a carne dish that he also raved about. This is a great stop on your travels in the area and fun to poke around the building with its various rooms and local decor. Highly recommended.

“Just Not that Impressed”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

When we read the reviews of this place and talked to a local we were pretty excited to try it. The restaurant is in a very charming setting, but I got a bit worried when I saw the tour bus out front. Here's my take -- this restaurant delivers a decent performance, but it is really the only game in town. If it were in another location, I just don't think the reviews would be nearly as laudatory. The restaurant is very large and there were plenty of empty tables, but we still had a pretty lengthy wait at the bar. They just didn't have the staff to handle everyone at one time. The bar waitstaff tried hard, but they were unskilled. Slow and don't really know anything about what they are selling. Lunch was solid, but not anything particularly noteworthy. Only exception is the honey. Yup, the standout was the dish of local honey they serve with the sopapillas. That was a flowery bowl of deliciousness. It's worth a few bites of fried bread just to soak in those flavors. It's available in the gift shop.

The real super stars of Chimayo are the Santuario de Chimayo (time your visit so you can attend Mass) and Ortega's Weaving Shop. Rancho de Chimayo Restaurante is a pleasant stop on the way out of town to your next adventure, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get there.

“This place has been excellent for 40 years”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

We ate in this restaurant 40 years ago when we lived is Los Alamos and although it is now much larger the food is just as good.
We had both lunch and dinner there when staying across the road at the Rancho de Chimayo Hacienda and enjoyed both meals .
They make excellent Crane Avado a favorite of min and chile rellenos

“love it”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

Make sure to try the chile rellenos or the carne adovada (hot). The stuffed red jalapenos appetizer is outstanding also. The restaurant building is very pretty and the gift shop has chiles and sauces you can take home for later. Nice place in the middle of nowhere!
