“Ghostly chill welcomed!”

This is one of those things you do for your husband! Personally, I didn't get it, but he was grinning from ear-to-ear the entire time. The staff is friendly and service is efficient. We were fortunate enough to visit while their restaraunt was in full service. The menu was wonderful. We reserved their largest room - the Waite Phillips -- upstairs in the original hotel which included a smaller attached room suitable for a third person. The bath had a fabulous clawfooted tub. My only real complaint is that we were not aware of the room cooling situation---namely there is none! Probably not so bad in the spring or fall---but not really romantic in August! It is worth mentioning that they have added a string of modern-air conditioned rooms if you prefer.
P.S. the heat must have spooked the ghosts away for the evening!!

We recently stayed at the St. James Hotel. We loved its antiques and rich history. All along the walls are pictures with captions showing the famous people who have stayed there. The legends of haunting also added to the fun of the stay. Did we smell the perfume of a ghost visitor or was it just my perfume on the pillow? Throughout the night the creeky floorboards seemed to sing adding to the atmosphere. We were right across from Room 18 which is permanently padlocked shut because of legends of a malevolent ghost who resides in there. The food in the restaurant was decent and the service was excellent.

Although Albuquerque may not be as large of a city as L.A. or NYC, but it is still a city. After viewing the story of the St. James on Unsolved Mysteries, I convinced my husband that we should stay at a "historic" (haunted) St. James hotel. What an experience, it's charming, you get the feeling someone is in the room or hall looking at you or there with you. We absolutely love it! It is so neat not to have a telephone ringing, or for that matter a TV blareing. It is a quiet very nice getaway from the city. It is haunted! If you should get the opportunity to go stay the night or two there, bring a little gift for the little ghost boy, bring some books or board games for yourselves. Try not to be startled by the ghosts, they are as curious about you as you are about them....

My husband and I lucked upon the St. James Hotel about 4 or 5 years ago as we drove from a disappointing tour of Dodge City, Kansas. (It was his "Wild West Tour" and he used to watch Gunsmoke, for heavens sake.) We were told by the guide in the tiny Information stop that the St. James was an historic, and haunted, hotel. She herself had had an eerie experience there and assured us that it was a Must See. We drove down the road and were thrilled to see that it was not one of those hotels that has been all slicked up and glossed over in an attempt to revive the past. It seemed to still BE in the past. We wandered down the hallways and looked into Bat Masterson's, Annie Oakley's, Buffalo Bill's, and Jesse James' rooms, viewed the ledgers signed by Jesse James (an alias of his, anyway), went upstairs to see the room that is so haunted that it is locked shut, and saw the bullet holes in the tin ceiling of the restaurant(which was the original bar). Well, we were hooked and checked into Bat's room for the night. Did I experience any ghostly visits? Well, I did smell the fragrance of roses...but maybe that was the power of suggestion? The diningroom was open that night and we had a fabulous meal served on white tablecloth...wine, etc. Very romantic! The entire experience was just magical. The only sad part is that we tried to recreate the experience a couple of years later and it fell flat. The diningroom was not open because they couldn't find enough people to work there, I had altitude sickness, we stayed in the Jesse James room and that room is not as nice as the Bat Masterson, etc. Oh, well. If you go, be sure to interview the staff about their ghostly encounters and pray that the diningroom is open for a nice dinner. Either way, don't miss this hotel experience!
