“Definitely a place to stop at when in Gallup”

After going in and out of just about every store on Route 66, it was a pleasure to walk into Richardsons. It is a big store, so plan on spending some time just walking around. One of my objectives was to purchase an authentic Navajo woven rug. The selection was huge and the price range wide and competitive. We found a small rug that we liked at a reasonable price. When we purchased it, they were able to give us a picture of the woman who made it holding the item, this was a nice touch. All, in all, I felt very comfortable making this purchase.

“Like stepping into an old Arizona Highways magazine.”

Yes, their prices are high but they know their business and their items are authentic. This is one of the iconic shops in the southwest. As one person said it is a working museum.

As a side note, many Navajo patrons use pawn shops such as Richardson's as a safety deposit box. When they want to make sure a special item such as a wedding basket or family jewelry is protected, they pawn it so that it will be stored in a safe. When they need it for an ceremony, they get it out of pawn.

There are other cheaper shops up and down the Gallup strip, but many sell replica Navajo-look alike wares that are imported such as rugs, baskets, and pottery. It is easy for the novice to be fooled. This is not the case at Richardson's. Even if you just go to look, it is an experience in itself.

Huge place, I must have missed the friendly staff that day. All I got was arrogance thrown at me. The woman who is a owner, manager? , just plain arrogant rude person isn't worth the time to walk in the place. I didn't disrespect you , you didn't need to do it to me. If you treat all the local natives like you treated me, I'm surprised they sell you anything.
People just because they have a collection of bling they have managed to bilk out of people, its a glorified pawn shop nothing else, don't let all the colors fool you.

“Everything from Saddles to Earrings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

Richardson's just goes on forever, with aisles and aisles of Indian jewelry, pots, baskets, and crafts, a room full of handwoven Indian blankets, another room of saddles, ... ... ... . Very good quality!

Friendly staff to show you the merchandise and tell you about Richardson's history as a real trading post.

Take some time and tour the Richardsons Trading Company even if you don't purchase anything. It is full of Indian art, new and vintage. The staff is excellent and knows the history of each piece.
