WE love driving thru the Jemez Mountains especially in the fall when the leaves are turning. The drive from Jemez Pueblo to the Valles Caldlera National Preserve is gorgeous any time of the year

Plan your drive - especially in October - to head from north to south, that way the sun hits the trees in all their glory. Don't miss the caldera area, watch for snow on the side of the road, and look up high, there are aspens up in the pine/evergreens. We timed our drive to arrive at the caldera area about 2:30 in the afternoon. The trees along the Jemez River look like they would glow in the dark. Take your time, pull over as needed and ENJOY.....

they were green, glorious, and a complete surprise to find in the high desert. We'll be back. Perhaps not soon, but eventually.
