“Interesting hotel, but terrible service”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

The hotel has apparently changed ownership. It is a nice historic building, and we did have a good dinner in the hotel restaurant. However, the beds and bedding were old and not so nice, and our room just looked out on a wall. The plaza area seems like it's seen better days. When we made our reservation, it said it came with free breakfast in the hotel restaurant, as did the books in the hotel room. However, the front desk clerk told us that morning that new management no longer offered free breakfast. The management never showed up to clear this up. Finally they gave me a $10 refund, which did not make up for missing breakfast for me and my 3 daughters. Other hotel patrons were also treated rudely by hotel staff. It's too bad, because this could be a nice place.

Room Tip: The online reservations lie about amenities offered.

We stayed in the "honeymoon suite" because it was the only king-sized bed available the night of our stay, which we had timed to coincide with heritage week. One night was more than enough. Located in the "newer" building, it was a charmless room with rather cheap reproduction furniture, one 10x14" photo of a sad-faced Victorian wedding couple on the walls (maybe they stayed there) and no other decor of any kind. I like high ceilings (estimate these at 12 feet) but the bare, glaring white walls made us feel like we were sleeping in a warehouse. In the "extra" room (very odd space resembling a hallway) there was only a bare black mini-fridge with a small microwave stacked on top, a hall table, and a modern, uncomfortable love seat which faced an utterly bare wall. The "suite" reeked of cleaning solution, which didn't dissipate during our stay (what was in there before us?). There was no protective covering or mattress pad on the mattress - just a flimsy sheet - which I consider quite unhygienic. Also, dingy carpets, no other decor, one luggage rack, and very dimly lit. We were promised a free continental breakfast at check-in. Next morning - No breakfast. No explanation by the solo staff person, and certainly no offer to provide a discount in the on-site restaurant. A metal pot of coffee and paper cups were put out on the counter - no cream or sweetener, stirrers, or napkins. Maybe the new owners will bring it up to acceptable standards. I'm considering this a rather pricey, unfortunate mistake.

Found the Plaza by chance! Driving to Taos and hit big rain storms and decided to stay in Las Vegas NM. The hotel was historic and on the town square. Rooms were big and nicely appointed and they were pet friendly. The restaurant is excellent and great drinks in the old bar!

Made a trip to the Plaza Hotel every year for the past seven years. Although we have not been to the Plaza Hotel since September 2012, we are back now in July 2014. Do not like the transformation at all! Definitely has gone down hill. Need a wrist band to enter the bar area. We ate in the restaurant area and the tap beer was served in plastic cups. The blue corn tacos were made with can chicken. The interior looks run down. What happened to such a beautiful historic place? It is not just the hotel....things have changed around the square and not for the better. What a disappointment. It was a place we loved to visit.

The room was not in the Victorian Section, but it was clean and quiet.
Carpet needs updating tho, many stains and looks dirty.
While we bought it on "Priceline" it advertised on its website that it had free breakfast...and it is not free...very high end hotel restaurant ...
The other issue is the Plaza folds up the sidewalks at 5 pm...hard to find anything open.
Very friendly and accommodating staff...

Room Tip: If you like the " early matrimony style" ask for the Victorian section which of course is...

... not now. We have stayed at the Plaza in the past and had always enjoyed it. This time was different though. We checked in on July 17, threw our bags in the room, then headed downstairs for dinner. After a full day in Santa Fe and on the road, we didn't bother to inspect the room; just went to bed.

When we woke in the morning, I noticed that there was a wrapper from a trail bar on the floor beside my bed, and it was not mine. Then I realized that the used newspapers that were in the trash can under the bathroom sink were not ours either. Knowing this, we regretted sleeping in the room that night.

We told the front desk about it so that they could let the maid know why she didn't get any tip. Hopefully the hotel will remedy the situation.

Room Tip: The downside is that we had requested (online) a room facing the plaza and did not get one. The ups...

While this is not the newest and most modern hotel I have ever stayed in, it is still a very classy, historical experience. My room on the quiet side of the hotel was very clean and quite large, decorated in an older victorian style - lacy curtains, creaky floors. The staff is super-polite, friendly and helpful; from the concierge to the wait staff to the bartenders - everyone was great. Make sure to use your complimentary breakfast tickets as this is one of the BEST free full-service breakfasts I have ever had. Great value and a very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: There is a quiet side and a more noisy side to this hotel. The side that looks over the plaza can be...
