“Fine dining in the Upper Mimbres!”
Reviewed 18 June 2012

Just opened in May 2012, this place has it going on! Great appetizers, entrees, lots of organic wines & beer, friendly service and a nice place to linger over a meal. We had eaten at the tavern downstairs earlier in the week and found tasty, priced right pub food then joined friends for dinner on Saturday night. Now besides being just a lovely drive thru the Gila Wilderness, one has another reason to take the trip north of Silver City. The owners may want to consider more outside seating since the views are magnificent and the restaurant is a bit warm.

“Mountain Dining at it's Best !!”
Reviewed 8 June 2012

Visiting the "Toad" is almost surrealistic : gourmet, eclectic, 'Southwestern nouveau' cuisine nestled in the wild, rugged, beauty of the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico. The new young owners of the Toad have ventured into the heart of the Gila and poured their energy and hearts into creating an exceptional and unique dining experience which is a stark rarity in those kind of "back-woods" environs. If you are looking for prize discoveries "off the beaten path" this is one to mark on your trip agenda.
They have transformed the tired old cafe/lodge into a "destination". The restaurant, tavern, and rooms represent essential New Mexico. An artistically crafted decor blending quaint, rustic and modern themes which flow with, and compliment, the beautiful environs of the vast forest.
The service, atmosphere, presentation, and cuisine rival any establishment we have visited. Don't expect piles of fast filler foods spilling off your plate like a typical steak house. This dining fare is proportional and meant to be savored. You won't be left wanting. My "dining education" was formulated in Pasadena, Calif. while there on business for 2 to 3 months at a time. Pasadena is somewhat renowned in So. Cal for their upscale "restaurant hopping".
Simply put: the Toad has brought dining civilization into the wilderness while maintaining a totally relaxed and unpretentious ambiance which attracts locals and "out-of-staters" alike.
The lodge is a comfortable , pleasant, and incredibly convenient "home base" from which to enjoy all the outdoor favors the central Gila Wilderness has to offer. In addition, the rates are quite a deal for a while as Teresa and David plan to keep working on improvements to the lower lodge in the near future.
The Tavern food is very good and varied 7 days per week and the weekend dining and brunches make for a very special treat. Russ is the Executive Chef for the main dining menu. Russ treats his work as art and it shows. Delicious menu with something for everyone !!
The Tavern is perfect for day and evening meals during the week when you are sight-seeing, hiking, or staying at the lodge but you should really plan on making it by for the weekends when you can enjoy the brunches and full dining room experience.
David, Teresa, and Russ are the most genuine, honest, and friendly folks you would hope to encounter and when you enter the Gila a stranger you will leave with real friends back in the wilds of New Mexico.
We are so happy to have discovered this gem in the wilderness hills and enthusiastically suggest that anyone visiting the stunning Gila Wilderness will stay at, or drop by, the Toad when possible.

“New Restaurant in Mountains - Well Worth the Trip”
Reviewed 28 May 2012

Exploring the mountainous region north of Silver City, we decided to stay overnight at the Lake Roberts Motel. The owner raved about a new restaurant located a couple of miles from the lodging. His raves were very accurate. Where else in southern New Mexico can you get wild Pacific salmon? We haven't found it anywhere in the region before. The salmon was prepared to perfection, about medium rare, and came with a delicious pesto sauce on top. Being west coasters now living on the high desert, it was a wonderful surprise and definite treat to find "real" and not farm salmon! The rest of the entrees on the menu looked very inviting. The restaurant had just been open a week, and was looking forward to a grand opening on the Mother's Day weekend. There was every reason to expect some kinks in their service and food quality, but they already had their act together. The chef and manager came to our table several times to make certain we were totally satisfied, and we were! In remodeling the building the owners have not skimped on expense. The woodsy interior included nice touches of various woods, and some exquisite artwork. The Little Toad Creek Inn and Tavern is on the second floor with a large deck; a nice setting with a great view. Though we were enjoying it as a couple, nearby a family was feeling quite at home in the rich environment. It is about 45 minutes to an hour drive from Silver City, located near Lake Roberts, in the heart of the Gila Wilderness. The food quality and the staff excellence is worth the drive. We'll return soon, and hopefully the salmon will be on the menu!
