Typically for central and southern New Mexico, there are signficant distances between towns. Roswell is my preferred stop in eastern/central NM, with good services, a sense of tradition and a relatively thriving attitude stemming from the UFO "industry" that put the place on the map. Sure beats Portales, Clovis and Artesia.
This Best Western is a clean and comfortable, but non-assuming two story motel, reasonably set back from the main street, giving a little break on noise. The pool was nothing special, but not that important for me anyway since I was just doing a one-nighter. Rooms are decent sized, bed was comfortable, good selection from the local cable TV and some rooms with refrigerators. On this point, I've stayed here twice and assumed all rooms had the fridges -- they don't..so ask if you want one. Room rate was not affected. Also, in the late summer, avoid the upper story rooms facing west if possible -- the air conditioning is at the back of the room and there is definitely a temperature gradient from there to the front sitting area by the window, like it was HOT near there. Otherwise, I was happy enough. A good restaurant/diner is next door -- healthy heuvos rancheros and an espresso machine (yes, Roswell has two espresso serving locations!).
The more expensive Best Western is across the street, but this place was just fine at $45 for the night in the middle of summer.
