I am a senior person travelling on my own and was cared for so well I just didn't want to leave, Kelly will tell you that. The food was excellent, staff just fantastic and Doc's game drives out of this world, he shared so much of his knowledge with all the occupants of the vehicle. The fact that he would go off road was amazing and what we found when he did, was very different to the usual routes. I learned so much about the various animals and their habits. My room was great and being escorted to and fro during the evening time was always secure. All I needed was to be reminded what day it was and what time I had to be in the car! I had 6 nights there and wish I had stayed longer.

Room Tip: My room was Unit 1 and very comfortable, but then I was on my own so had plenty of room.

My family have just had a wonderful trip to South Africa and Cheetah Plains was definitely the highlight against strong competition. The lodge is relaxed and comfortable with the most fantastic hospitality from all the staff. We had excellent food - especially the brunches and the braai (the best boerwors of the trip!). This is the place if you love to see animals. We saw all the big five in one drive but it was far more than just ticking the boxes. In our two days we saw leopards mating, baby hyenas, followed lions on a hunt and spotted a shy genet plus much more. No queues of vehicles here - you feel the peace of the bush. Our tracker Doctor was completely amazing and we felt we had made a friend when we left. Thank you Willem and all at Cheetah Plains.

Thank you for your review and kind words, we really appreciate it.

We are delighted that we could share our special corner of the world with you and that you enjoyed such a great game viewing experience. Each safari is unique and different, and in the Northern Sabi Sands each day is an adventure. As you rightly say, safaris are not about ticking the boxes, but really experiencing nature and the animals in their natural world.
We hope to welcome you back again soon, please do stay in touch via our Facebook page and please share some of your pictures, we would love to see.

Wild wishes,
Willem du Toit.

We stayed for three nights in mid-July 2013, two adults in a double room.

Room - the room was functional. That's not to put it down - it was clean and the bed comfy enough (albeit actually twin beds pushed together). The shower was temperamental, you could use it okay but it took a bit of practice. The safe was infuriatingly erratic and the electrics were functioning but a bit aged. This reads like a list of moans but actually we were very happy - it's just that a little bit of expenditure could really improve the place. Please keep reading...

Food - excellent! Usually served either at a large communal table or individual tables around a fire. Absolutely no complaints. Meals were served as brunch (after the morning safari), afternoon tea (before the evening safari - tea and cake) and dinner after the evening drive.

Safari - this is why you come to Sabi Sands. Unlike other parts of Kruger you can get closer to the animals as this is part of a private concession. Our guide was Doctor and as you can see from other reviews he is excellent (you can try to request him on your booking) although to be fair the other guide, Justin, was also friendly and very successful. We saw all the big-5 and much more, including lots of leopard and also witnessed lions hunting and then feasting on a kill. If you say at the lodge for only one reason the quality of safari should be it! The jeeps sits nine (three rows of three) but doesn't usually have more than 5 when we were there - even when full you would get a great view.

Overall we liked the lodge. As we waned a broad range of experiences we preceded the stay with two nights at Jocks in Kruger (about 3 hours drive away) which gave a nice contrast. From the lodge it was 1.5-2 hours to the local airport (Hoedspruit I think) and then a short flight to Jo'berg.

Thank you for your lovely review. We appreciate that you did not stop your review at the little eccentricities of an older safari camp. Although that being said, our lodge did receive a complete soft renovated in 2012, but it is in essence a rustic bush camp, and we did not want to change the older style bungalows. The main thing that guests can expect to experience with us, is the magnificent game viewing, the homely food and the warm, friendly staff. We are delighted that that was also your experience.
Thank you for your kind words about the guides, Doc and Justin, we shared your comments with them and the rest of the staff.
We hope to welcome you back some day soon,
Wild wishes,
Willem du Toit

First time staying at the lodge. I was struck by the warm and friendly hospitality of the staff. They really felt like a team and the singing around the fire in the evening proved this. From the barman to the guides and the manager, all were friendly and professional. It felt like I was in the hands of capable and experienced staff who know their way around the bush and enjoy it.

This was topped off by well prepared meals and exceptional game viewing. The lodges in the area work well together to ensure their guests see as much as possible and this "sharing" of sightings seems to be working well. I must make special mention of our guide (Doctor), whose knowledge of wildlife is matched with a kind nature and good communication skills with guests (if you can get him talking around the fire he has some amazing stories from his time spend in the bush).

All in all this is fantastic value in a stunning area with great game viewing.

Good Day Zaid

Thank you so much for your great review. It is a huge honour for us that you compare your experience with us at Cheetah Plains, to the footage that you saw on National Geographic. The game viewing here is amazing and we are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us.

We hope to see you again soon and I will certainly pass your compliments on to the team and Doc, who will also be very pleased!

Wild wishes,
