“I asked for the big 5 & they delivered”
Reviewed 14 February 2013

I did a lot of research on where I wanted to stay for a safari - I narrowed it down to Sabi Sands, and then further down to Idube based on price, location, sightings, shared reserves & reviews. My friend traveling me was reluctant as it was higher priced than others she looked at, but after an amazing stay, agreed it was worth it!

Why?
-There are enough people at the reserve to find some you'd enjoy conversing with, but not too few that you can't avoid those who might not be your ideal dinner companion.
-The food was good - I wouldn't say it was the best ever - but it was good & plentiful.
-The lodges were clean, spacious & well decorated.
-The bathroom was fantastic - a fantastic rainhead shower, huge tub AND and outdoor shower. -The staff was friendly - from Lauren & Andrew who manage the place (Andrew also was our game driver), to our tracker Lonnet & the others who interacted with guests.
-6 guests per vehicle
-We saw all of the big 5! I went there knowing it was unlikely but they really do their best to ensure you have amazing sightings. They traverse other reserves (as they do Idube's) but limit the number of jeeps that can be at a sighting at one time (2 max). But other vehicles go on standby.

The only "con" of Idube was the wait/serving staff... they didn't tend to smile or say hello. Now this could be a cultural/language difference. Being American, we do have a very customer service oriented culture where you are told to greet customers at every instance with a smile & to be very friendly - sometimes too friendly according to other cultures.

I would highly recommend choosing Idube!!!

Hi Rachelle

I am so pleased you had an awesome time here and lived up to our expectations you had. I do apologize about the wait staff as they are very friendly and normally always have a smile on their face. Hope to see you on safari soon.

Kind regards

Andrew

We spent two wonderful nights at Idube after last visiting the lodge way back in 1995!

The lodge is still how we remember it, very rustic, bushy and comfortable. The meals were five star, truly excellent, and a big improvement compared to the food on our visit to the lodge 18 years ago.

The lodge has a hide overlooking a small dam but the highlight for us was the game drives. We saw leopards and wild dogs on all four drives! Where else will you get such close-up sightings of these rare animals? Our ranger, Andries, was very good. He realised we were photographers so he went all out to get us to the sightings when they were called in and then to position us so that we could get good photographs of the subjects. Many visitors to the Sabie Sand Reserve think that sightings are guaranteed but that is not the case. We chatted to a few other visitors who did not see any predators on their drive and they were very envious of our sightings! This success was due to Andries and his skill and knowledge.

Andries was also a great host and he entertained the guests at dinner as he told us some of his bush stories and close encounters with animals.

On our second day we were just finishing breakfast when the vervet monkeys in the trees started screaming and the resident warthogs and nyala started running – there was the resident leopard strolling in front of the chalets along the edge of the unfenced camp – if your tracker cannot find the leopard she will come and find you at the lodge!

Overall we had a great safari at Idube.

Room Tip: The two Makubela suites are raised and provide a good view over the bush.

I am glad we choose this Resort and the staff is Very friendly, very helpful. Overall The food, the staff, the game safaris, the dinner was all incredible. Given a choice I will always stick to the reserve as It makes the Trip all the more enjoyable.
In terms of the game safari, the ranger goes to great extents to provide great views for all the animals and takes care of the guests like a family,
Overall a great experience

We just stayed there for the holiday season past and we had a wonderful time! The staff was incredible and made us feel like we were family, especially for Christmas. The food was the best that I had the whole time I was in South Africa, Andrew and Emmy made sure of that. The accommodations were beautiful and clean and everybody seemed to take pride in the property. The professional and knowledgable game trackers made me feel comfortable as well.
If you're planning a trip to the , please do it at Idube!

My friends and I stayed at Idube this past Xmas 2012 and had an amazing time. The property is beautiful and the staff is top notch. We saw the big 5 within the first 2 days, the trackers worked hard to make this happen for you. Hope you check them out.

I recently visited Idube for a three day safari with a couple of friends. It was a fanastic experience. I believe the lodge is four state but the service was five star, very personal but unobstrusive. The lodge only holds 20 people which means you get a very unique and one on one experience. .The entire team were friendly and professional. Our guide and tracker were outstanding - Andreis and Louie found us everything we wanted to see, answering our endless question and just taking good care of us. I would recommend to anyone!

Another bonus was that animals (harmless ones!!) roamed around - helping you feel you really were

We spent 4 nights at Idube in November and both in terms of the quality of the the complex and the game drives we had a great experience. The only small difficulty is that if you are in a hire car the road surface to Newington gate is not great and nor is the sign posting especially when leaving at the end of the trip.
Lauren, the manager, was extremely friendly and welcoming when we arrived. the whole complex is very attractive with impala, waterhogs and other animals wandering around. The chalets were very comfortable, the food plentiful and delicious and the ambience at the bar for the predinner drinks really encourged everyone including the staff to mix and get to know one another whilst exchanging stories about the day's game drives.

Although getting up at 5.00 am every morning was an effort it was worth it for the fantastic experiences of the animals we encountered. All the rangers and trackers make the experience unforgettable. They were very knowledgeable about all the wildlife and fauna and very adept at finding the animals and Andrees our ranger was great at following leopards and elephants through the bush. We were impressed at the cooperation shown between different groups of rangers when an interesting sighting occurred, whilst at the same time not unduly disturbing the animals by allowing to many vehicles to surround them. It enabled us to profit from a rare sighting such as those of wild dogs. They made sure we saw the Big Five but were also keen to show smaller animals as well as insects, reptiles and plants especially when going out for a guided walk after breakfast. We really enjoyed the evening drives including the "sundowner drinks" especially the one we shared overlooking a group of hippos. The after dark element of the game drive adds an extra dimension.

Having had a tremendous set of game drives over three days, the last morning was finished in superb style by being driven out to their bush camp where the staff had come out to to cook us breakfast on a camp fire. a perfect end to a fantastic stay.

We look forward to coming back.

Din and Pete
