“The Best”

We had the most amazing experience at Kirkman's Kamp. We recommend it for everyone for every reason. The drives were excellent; we loved our guide and tracker. They knew just where to go and were informative and fun. They loved looking at the animals and at the scenery as much as we did. The accommodations were luxurious; the food was great (although there was too much of it!) and all of the people were beyond friendly. We loved this place and the experience we had there.

We spent four days at Kirkman's from 29 July to 01 August. This was our first ever trip to Africa, I wanted it to be special but was beginning to get worried that I had oversold it to my family (wife, son aged 16 and daughter nearly 13). How could I be so wrong?! We found our own Leopard ourselves on the taxi ride to the lodge, saw 3 of the big 5 before we'd even been on the first game drive, and it just carried on getting better and better. The lodge staff were attentive without being over-bearing, the food and atmosphere were great, and with our ranger Lennox and tracker Robert finding more and more wildlife on every game drive it couldn't have been better. 24 species of mammal and 91 species of bird in 4 days; Lion, Leopard and Cheetah on kills; 9 different Leopards seen; thousands of photos taken; thousands of calories consumed! Admittedly it is somewhat expensive, but we thought it was worth it. Quite simply the best way to be introduced to the African bush and the joys of safari.

Room Tip: All rooms are semi-detached, room 1+2 is right near the lodge but the whole place is so quiet and pe...

Warmly welcomed by a very charming and friendly Kira, and shown around the property. Ate too well at the lodge, despite requests for smaller portions!

Rooms were very well and comfortably fitted out.

Unlike some other camps/lodges, the lodge do not have mounting/raised platforms for the guests, so noticed a few elderly guests had some trouble with getting in/out of the game drive vehicles.

Unfortunately with just 2 game drives, game sighting was rather sparse, especially for the larger mammals. Plenty of impalas, steenboks, duikers, etc. but for the Big 5 and other iconic mammals, rather disappointing. Saw a trio of lions lazing around waiting for a kill to happen so they need not work for it.

The sundowners were very generous, with an extra helping of goodies, such as butterscotch caramel popcorn, mixed nuts, biltong, fudge, amarula and other liqueurs.

Simon, one of the servers, is a gem! He is an obvious favorite with the guests with his enthusiasm and many tricks up his sleeve, and his eagerness to share them with everyone. He always serves with a smile.

We have had the best 3 days at Kirkmans! Starting with the staff! They worked their socks off and have simple yet elegant touches. We were a group of 14! (10 year olds through to bad backed dads!) Our game rangers were wonderful and kept the balance of amusing the teens and giving us more leisurely, informative drives. We saw wonderful game and loved the understated elegance of the camp. The food is phenomenal! The kids asked for the same food 3 days in a row! We had cold water the first night, the geyser element wasn't working and by the time we got back from dinner it was fixed - a huge achievement for the middle of the bush! The fun we have had has really created special memories for us - we really appreciated the interaction of the staff! We knew we had paid for an expensive holiday and we arrived with high expectations - they were all met, and beyond!! Well done and thank you.

We spent 4 days at kirkmans early this just past august 2013 - it was just superb with brilliant game drives each day and a wonderful bush breakfast one day - all meals were very good quality well prepared food - good accomodation (but the one small negative is darker curtains or a blind are needed on the window to cut down on the external security lights penetrating the room)

All in all a very good quality to just excellent safari and accomodation experience that exceeded expectation ( and we have been to Africa for safari trips a few times now and this was one of the very best) - one small point is Please Please replace the leaking and useless raincoat ponchos in the vehicles - we got very very wet when it rained and the subsequent colds and flu was not very welcome

Other than that if your thinking of going to kirkhams then its defintely worth it !!!!!!!!!!

We spent 3 fantastic nights at Kirkman's as part of a two week safari trip. As other reviewers have noted, the accomodations are excellent-- large safari style rooms with a large bathroom, a balcony, etc. While it is truly a luxury safari, it is very understated so you still have the African safari feel. The game drives were great (our ranger Elliot and tracker Jaffet were great as well.) Within the first two game drives, we saw the big 5, including watching two lions eating a cape buffalo, watching a leopard come within feet of our vehicle, another leaopard and cub feeding on an antelope they had stashed in a tree, etc. The food was excellent (probably the best of the 4 camps that we visited). Also, it was very family friendly and accomodating- -- our 15 year old daughter is very, very picky and they always accomodated her with pizza, pasta, etc.) The staff at the camp really was fantastic. All of the staff were very warm, friendly and accomodating. By the end of our first day, our butler Cynthia knew everyone's preferred drink, snacks etc and would get them before we even asked. The heating pads in the beds and hot water bottles on the game drives were a nice touch as well. The pool was very cold (as they are at all of the lodges), but it was a beautiful spot to spend a few hours between the meals/game drives, etc.

The only negative was the "community experience" which was a visit to a nearby town -- while we hoped to see and learn about the local culture, we felt that we were being paraded around to show what great things some American donors have done for the local schools, rather than getting any understanding of their life and culture.

All in all, this is a really a great lodge.

There is a reason everyone loves his place. We arrived after dark and had most of the staff standing on he porch waiting for us. The family style atmosphere continued though our three night stay. Gift and Eugene the camp managers couldn't have been more on top of things. There is no check in desk or concierge desk, it really feels like you are staying in the guest cabin of your friends or family. Simon and Ian took care of our EVERY whim or need. We had Elliott as a driver and Jafret (not sure about that spelling) as our tracker, you won't believe the things they see that you have trouble picking out of the landscape AFTER they point it out. We were with a group of 22 and we were in 4 trucks because they don't like to pack you in. Each group argued that there guide/trackers were the best. One morning we saw all of the Big 5!! They know how to track the animals and could answer every question we asked.
The food was true gourmet and there was tons of it! You start early in the morning with coffee and a light snack, you stop in the bush for more drinks and usually cookies, then when you get back you have a full breakfast. By time you fit in lunch, afternoon tea and a full dinner you won't go hungry. The camp is in the middle of the nature preserve with no fences so you have animals running through the camp all the time. It was a little cool while we were there but they do have a very nice infinity pool. I didn't comment on value because this was part of a package for us so I don't know how much we paid, but afterwards I would say I would have paid anything for this experience. Bring your tip money you will WANT to take care of them after they took such great care of you.
