and it did at Leadwood! We are not new to game lodges and know that the rotation of staff can have a big affect on one's experience as can other visitors and availability of game to view. We hit the jackpot at this lodge. Only three of the four accomodations were in use while we there; ours, a single friend who travelled with us, and another charming couple who were celebrating their wedding anniversary.
The accomodations are very spacious and oh, so private. The verandah with it's plunge pool overlooking the river below is breathtaking. The pool can be a bit chilly at the end of September but perfect for a quick cool off after a game drive.
The food was outstanding with Robert the chef taking great care and pride in his cooking and gentle Martha making sure we had everything we wanted. Nicola managed everything with a deft touch including lanterns and champagne as we turned onto the camp track to celebrate an anniversary. And a greeting with dance and song from the staff when we returned from our last evening game drive.
Finally our outstanding ranger Craig and tracker Jack. Chasing at full speed after hunting lionesses was one of the more exciting moments of our lives and sitting quietly with a stunning leopard was breathtaking. Craig's knowledge & experience mixed with an irreverent sense of humour made this stay our best ever in Africa.
Three days was just not long enough!

This lodge had been booked by our agent and we knew nothing about it. Nicla, the manager greeted us and showed us to our room and the only thing I can think of is "WOW"
With just 4 rooms, it has a 7 star feeling. Our room was huge with living room overlooking a beautiful view, dressing room, bedroom, huge bathroom and indoor/outdoor shower overlooking our private pool. Aerone, our butler, was soft spoken but a first class professional in every sense. Our ranger, Steve and tracker Prince, made sure we saw as much as possible, up close and personally. Morning tea and evening cocktails in the bush are a wonderful experience and each evening Nicla greeted us after safari with lovely drinks before dinner.
This was our last stop on this trip and it was like the icing on the cake. This is a don't miss lodge.

My husband and I spent 2 wonderful weeks in Africa. We traveled to Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. We spent our last 4 nights at Leadwood Lodge. It was the most exclusive and luxurious place we stayed. The lodge only accomadates 8 people in 4 beautiful private lodges. Each lodge has a sitting area, a bedroom, and large bathroom with a soaking tub and glassed in shower. You have your own private pool, deck and outdoor shower. There is a bar and refridgerator which the staff refill daily. You can have as much privacy as you want including meals in your lodge. Or you can eat with the other guests and staff. The food was excellent. You will not go hungry. The cook even shared a couple of recipes with me. Staff could not be better. Our guide, William, and tracker, Isaac, were knowledgeable, friendly and accomadating. Isaac had the eyes of an eagle. He actually spotted a lizzard on the branch of a tree as we were driving by. We saw amazing animals. We were lucky enough to see a wild dog and lions killing a water buffalo. The last night we were there we had our Sundowner with a sister camp out under the African sky. It was truly beautiful. When we go back to the lodge, th staff had lit candles through out our room, had the table outside lit with laterns set up for dinner. There was even a warm bubble bath drawn for us. We had a private dinner served to us on last night there. It was a fantastic experience.

Words can not express how amazing this place really is. The attention to detail is like nothing we have experienced. The accommodation itself is fantastic with every comfort of home plus plenty more. The game drives were amazing! We saw everything!!!!! Including the elusive black rhino. Craig and phickson were extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. Robert our chef cooked us 5 star cuisine every meal. Aarone, our butler was friendly and ensured we had everything we needed without even having to ask! Tronelle the manager made sure everything was running smoothly at all times. If I could move in I would!!

My group of 8 people stayed 4 nights at Leadwood. Our party was large enough to rent the entire property. Upon arriving, we were greeted by the entire staff (I counted 9 people serving the 8 of us). They met us with ginger lemonade and gave us the orientation to the property. The orientation directed us to make ourselves at home. They also covered meal preferences and the dangers of walking without an escort at night as wild animals live on preserve unfettered. The main lodge is entirely open to nature. Baboons jumped around the living room and were promptly shewed away by the butler. At night when we ate in the boma, lions were roaring nearby, incredible!
The 3 meals and high tea were fabulously healthy and fresh. Some in our group had special dietary needs including gluten intolerance. The staff never skipped a beat. The gluten free bread was amazing. The chef was incredibly imaginative. We ate springbok, ostrich, and other venison. Our rooms were individual luxury huts with indoor and outdoor showers, soaking tubs, private swimming pools, free laundry service and fully stocked bars.
Several times a day the staff planned special surprises for us. Two game “hunts” were offered each day. They lasted up to three hours. The tracker and ranger were so knowledgeable, hospitable, and safety conscience. We saw rhino, lions, leopards, elephants, and hyenas up close and personal. We watched hunting, eating, mating, bathing, playing, and sleeping. If there were unicorns, Mac would have found them. Around the fire at night, Mac shared many stories about his training and adventures along with some pretty good jokes.
I can’t say enough about the staff, lead by the very capable Tronelle, who made this an unforgettable experience. We never felt that their hospitality was in anticipation of a big tip (although we left one). After several days of gluttony, I wanted to exercise. The ranger offered to bring me to the air strip for a jog where he would follow in the jeep to ward off the predators! From the room attendants to the butler, all genuinely wanted to make our experience special. Thumbs up to Tooba the masseuse as well. She was from a small village near the preserve and I was surprised to find that she was classically trained for Sweedish, hot stone and deep tissue techniques... truly a professional.
We also visited &Beyond’s Homestead Lodge in Phinda which was beautiful. The group agreed if we had to choose one lodge it would probably be Leadwood. Homestead is also a luxury venue with an excellent staff. We preferred the imaginative cuisine at Leadwood and were really given the red carpet treatment accompanied by hospitality. My suggestions to future travelers would be to travel light, let the staff pick the food, go on every game drive, give back to the local community, lock your room doors if you don't want a baboon visit and leave the ties and dresses at home.
