“impeccable service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2012

We just got back from our 10-day honeymoon in South Africa. We stayed in the Granite Suite for 2 nights and the Tree Camp for one night. Services at both camps were fantastic. Our room at the Granite was much newer and nicer. But both camps served pretty much the same food. Personally, I enjoyed the game drives at the Tree Camp more because the ranger (Tom) and tracker (Jerry) were very knowledgeable. We learned a lot from them.

We had a wonderful time there. However, with the high price tag, wine selections were very limited and food was just ok.

Dear uptown_girlNY,

Many thanks for your kind review, we are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed such fantastic service as well as game drives with Tom and Jerry in particular. We most certainly acknowledge your point on the food and wine and will work towards improving both in the year ahead. Thanks again for taking the time to review us,

Best regards,

My husband I just recently got back from Londolozi and all I can say is WOW! Truly a unique and unbelievable experience! Everything from the rooms to the food and especially the service was impeccable! I can't even begin to say how amazing it was to see ALL of the animals! We didn't miss a single one! To say it was a trip of a lifetime is an understatement! There is no question we will be back! Thank you again to the staff at the Londolozi.

My husband and I spent 4 nights at Londolozi Private Granite Suites at the end of October 2011. This was the beginning of the rainy season and the weather varied from warm to bundle up in a sweater and rain poncho. During our 4 night stay we saw the "big 5" and more. To experience all that Londolozi has to offer I would recommend 3 nights, our 4th night was just a bonus.

The suites are huge, luxurious, perfectly maintained and gorgeous. We stayed in room #2 which has it's private plunge pool right down by the river. While we were there and in our pool a herd of elephants strolled by. This was moments after our arrival and we thought this was an everyday occurrence, but we didn't see this so close to camp again during our stay.

The safari part of our stay at Londolozi was everything we wished for and more. I get the sense that whether you stay at Granite Suites or any of the other camps the experience is very similar except for your room. Granite does have the the nicest rooms. We strolled between camps at lunch and noticed that the same food we had at lunch was being served at the other camps as well.

Granite Suites is Londolozi's top end camp with rates just a few hundred dollars below Singita. Our experience at Londolozi was amazing but the part that didn't sit right with me was the food and beverage. Food was just okay and the wines we were allowed to choose from very very very limited. If you want to have a glass of scotch or a nice wine there is a surcharge. Friends of ours who have been to Singita raved about sitting in their wine cellar sampling endless wines by the glass and pouring glasses of Johnny Walker Blue Label. Londolozi's other camps are less expensive and they need to differentiate Granite Suites by including premium wine and liquor and providing a more 5 star dining experience to set this "premium" properly apart from the others.

Room Tip: Room 2, is supposed to be the best.

We came here just before Christmas 2010, and the memories that we have are amazing – I will never forget it. Its actually quite hard to put into words the memories and experiences that we had. We stayed at Exeter Leadwood Lodge 2 years ago, and I thought that was perfection. Londolozi Granite Suites though has blown them out of the water (sorry Leadwood – I still love you!)

The rooms in the granite suite...well, you walk in and you are just blown away. The setting is just divine. Room 2 (i think) is the room they show on the adverts – AMAZING! Simple lines, amazing set up. Cold water in the fridge, beds were so comfortable, views exquisite.

Food – bring trousers that are too big for you, as you will fit into them when you go home. Noomsa, who was the chef when we were there is wonderful. She cooks beef that melts in your mouth as an appetizer!!! There is a red pepper tapenade for lunch which we would have quite happily just eaten with bread and butter. Everyday. Forever. In fact, I still dream of it now.....sigh.....
Okay, onto more food. We ate at the candle lit Boma, in the room and also in the main area –all were wonderful. Means though that you can have a rest from the other guests if thats what you want. I don’t think there was a meal that was bad....or even slightly less than perfect!

Safari Guides – Tom (ranger) and Jerry (tracker). Well, what a double act! They are like an old married couple! Its hilarious! But, they are invincible trackers....full of the history of the area, the differing prides, the current Lion wars that are going on at the moment. No question was ever unanswered.
Jerry our tracker, spotted 3 separate leopards that must be been 100m off the dirt tracks in the space of half an hour – they were all sleeping up trees.(For those of you who think this is a lot in a short space and why didn’t you stick with them, we were on our way back for tea....more food!!) . On sun downer stops, we learnt about Jerry who is local, and his back ground. A very warm, loyal, interesting man, with a previous job as a shepherd. Tom, well, he is just the most lovliest person in the history of the world. Just wonderful!

Staff – If you had to write a book on how to do it right, you would write the book about the staff here. Attentive without being over bearing; professional, and through and through lovely, lovely people. And Cry....we were always served by Cry...daaaaaarling he is Maaaaaaarvellous (his favourite saying, and he is!).

You are lucky to be able to go to the village where the staff live, and see what they do for the other local communities in a sort of “pay it back” way, and you can go to see the children in the playgroup. We were lucky to get a song from the kids; just wonderful! You also get to learn about the history of the Shangaan people, and see how the goings on of a Kruger Safari Lodge work. A real eye opener. You can also buy goods that the staff make in their spare time as a bit of extra income. No pressure at all, but I bought a few bracelets – really pretty.

We went down to the other camps at Londolozi, and they were lovely, but I’m glad that we were at Granite. If you think “Is the extra expense worth it...?”, my answer would be,”it definitely is”

The genuine affection that people feel for one another here is infectious and you feel like you have come to stay at a friend’s house.

I was truly sorry to have to leave...I could have cried.....

We stayed at the Granite Suites for 2 nights whilst we were in South Africa on a family holiday. There were 6 of us so we had the whole camp to ourselves. The rooms are auperb each with an individual yet different pool. There is plenty of space and they are clean and cool.

The food is freshly prepared and you have someone to look after all your needs day and night. Our guide was excellent and we did some stunning game drives.

I can't recommend this place highly enough.

My wife and I stayed four days an Londolozi which is part of the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve which shares a fenceless border with Kruger National Park. We stayed in the Private Granite Suites which is the newest lodging at Londolozi; it has only three suites, and therefore only accommodates three couples. The suites are standalone villas, a few minutes walk fron the dinning pavallion which has a lounge, kitchen and dinning arera with three tables. It has its own staff and manager,Trisha, who were very friendly and truely professional. The food and wine including champange on arrival were excellent and included in the room price which was very expensive but worth it. The Pavillion and the three villas sit directly on the bank of the Sand River on top of a large natural grouping of granite rocks with an unobstructed view of the river. We stayed in Suite 3, and from our sitting room and deck saw many animals including elephants and lions! The suites are spectacular: they are permanent structures, not tents and are huge with multiple rooms and high wood ceilings, and are elegantly furnished, and each has a private deck with heated private plunge pool.
The game drives were fantastic. We travelled in an open Land Rover with one other couple. We were driven by an experienced ranger, James Hobson, who was also an excellent driver, travelling off the road through the bush to get up close to the animals. James was also extremely knowledgeable about the native animals, birds and plants. We also had a very experienced tracker, Lodolozi uses both a ranger and tracker on each vechile, and this proved very valueable as we successfully tracked several leopards and lions, which when located ignored our vehicle and sometimes walked by the side of the stopped vecthe only an arms length away. We saw the big five multiple times and many other animals including girafes, hippos, zebras, wildebeast, impalas
to mention a few.
We visited the Varty Camp at Londolozi which is a short walk. It had eight Chalets and and a beautiful large dinning area, lounge, swimming pool and yoga deck. There are three other camps at Londolozi offering different types of accommodations and different price levels including some for families. All guest have morning and afternoon game drives and access to the same animals.
We also had a private tour of the staff village and school and were warmly greeted and sung to by the children. The Varty family has owned Landolozi for over 80 years, and the members of the family can be seen actively managing it, and their values of respect for the enviorment and people are evident. Nelson Mandela wrote, " During my long walk to freedom, I had the rare privilege to visit Londolozi. There I saw people of all races living in harmony amidst the beauty that Mother Nature offers. Londolozi represents a model of the dream I cherish for the future of natue preservation in our country."
Our vacation to South Africa was wonderful, and Londolozi was the key part of it.

Granite feels like you are staying in the guest house of someone's home and the lodge (for your meals) is their den. Very nice accommodations, very friendly staff, great food - and the animal viewing is tops.
