“Outstanding stay”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Our stay at Sausage Tree was outstanding. The small size of the camp was perfect, resulting in a very comfortable, relaxed, like-home feeling.
The warmth and hospitality of Sonja, James, Liam, and Themba made our stay more like visiting friends. Orlando’s gourmet meals were spectacular – our whole family gained weight!
The daily schedule was great – both active and relaxing: an early morning drive on the reserve to track and view animals (with a coffee stop in the bush), a group breakfast at 10am, free time (for watching animals and appreciating the beauty of the land from the lodge deck – or for napping!), lunch at 2pm, an evening drive for more animal watching (including a sunset stop for drinks in the bush), and a super dinner served outdoors by the fire.
Themba’s ability to spot and track animals was impressive, as was his fearlessness. Liam excelled in his passion for and knowledge of the animals and environment (not to mention his riveting stories about previous animal encounters).
Staying at a small lodge made us feel like we lived there. We hardly saw other game-watching vehicles.
This experience ranks as one of the best family vacation we’ve ever taken around the world over the years. We recommend Sausage Tree most enthusiastically and without reservation.

Our group of four was hoping this was a camp that boasted trees of pork that pleased both man and beast. While there was no free-flowing bacon, we were absolutely thrilled with this lodge. This was our first game stop on our trip to S. Africa. We were so glad...guests sleep in wonderfully appointed tents (a definite highlight). They have en suite bathrooms with tubs and an outside shower. They also have porches that are wonderful to begin or end the day. The tents have air con if you need it. The food is great--all meals are communal and served a set times. A light snack of rusk and coffee is served before you head out on safari (5:30am which is great because you get such a good, early start). You come back to a delicious breakfast spread and then have free time. Lunch is served before the next game drive. Again, great down time after the drive, then a beautiful dinner is served outside in a lovely eating area complete with candles and camp fire. We enjoyed traditional meals and plenty of good wine and spirits.

About the game drives, it is obvious the owners have a passion for the land, its animals, and its people. The lodge is small and only ever has enough guests to fill one jeep--which is great! Our drives were so informative, educational and quite personalized. James, the guide, answered all our questions whether they were silly or not! We were so pleased with this because our future game drives did not have this attention to detail. Sausage Tree has an exceptional guide in James and also has a tracker/spotter on the front of the truck. Because we had such a great introduction to safari by Sausage Tree, we were not lost on the other drives because we already learned so much. Sonjia, the co owner of the camp made sure all ran smoothly back at the camp. The camp has a lovely small pool and lounge area. You simply could not ask for more...James also speaks French which came in handy due to the wonderfully diverse group of travelers we met at the camp. We loved this camp and experience. Do not miss it!

My wife and I and our 3 children (ages 12 to 14) spent 3 days and nights with James, Sonja, and their wonderful team at Sausage Tree in June of 2014--it was really the best experience we've ever had on a family vacation!! It is one of the most beautiful places we've ever been--simply amazing. The 'tents' are very deluxe--with very nice beds and bathrooms. Honestly, though--we spent little time in the tents--there is the common area/lodge with beautiful views of the mountains in the distance and great chairs for reading and chatting. The food was fantastic--their on-site chef really makes very wonderful food--breakfasts and lunches were served in the beautiful 'common area/lodge' and suppers were served around an outdoor fire in a unique outdoor eating area--hard to explain but really really great! There are only 5 'tents' so it is a small/intimate place--not large at all. But what made it so great was that different couples/families were always arriving/departing and so we met many different people in our 3 days--a couple from Australia, another couple from America, a couple from Tanzania--and we got to talk with/get to know all of these people at the meals and on the safari rides. Which brings us to the REAL highlight of this amazing place. As if the great hosts, tents, food, common-area/lodge, and fellow travelers were not enough--every day we had a morning safari and an evening safari where we were driven-around the game/nature reserve with our fellow-guests and we saw AMAZING wild-life every time. We saw elephants and lions and giraffe and everything else--often as close as 20 feet away from our safari vehicle--and occasionally even closer--it was AWESOME. Our kids loved it! I could go on and on but basically this place is truly truly a great place and we can not say enough good things about it. Thank-you James and Sonja and everyone else at Sausage Tree Safari Camp! The Sylvester Family.

Room Tip: There are only 5 tents--all of them basically the same and all of them great--nice beds, nice bathro...

We stayed at The Sausage Tree for four nights at the end of May and it was the most amazing experience. Having never been on safari before we didn't know what to expect but were definitely not disappointed! Amanda was very helpful with the booking and was prompt with her replies as we headed to the camp with little preparation regarding directions.....so thank you for that! James and Sonja's hospitality was just right which gives the camp a comfortable, personal feel. The food was excellent and was presented with great pride by Orlando the chef, by the camp fire each evening. Having also ventured into the main part of Kruger we loved the quietness of Balule and you feel so much closer to the animals when there's no-one else around and you've done some fun 'off-roading' to find them! James, Liam and Temba are clearly passionate about (and unbelievably gifted at spotting) the wildlife, and it's not just the big stuff......we were just as interested to learn about the birds, plants and insects as we were the big 5. Speaking of 5's......5.30 am starts are not our 'thing' but having done it once, the prospect of watching the sun rise over the stunning scenery whilst sat in the open-toppped Land Cruiser could probably get us out of bed most days! So if you're considering a safari and more importantly considering The Sausage Tree, Clare & Nick say 'go for it!'

I just have to say, that while visiting South Africa on a Working Holiday, I was expecting to only be able to do a short visit up to Krugar, rush about and stay uncomfortably in hotels and get my safari on.

Sausage Tree Safari Camp, was like visiting a family friend and staying at their place with a personalised tour of the wild african lands. The Hotel was so clean, dressed amazingly, but had a family feel to it.

Liam, our Tour guide (eye candy alert) was absolutely awesome! He got us to see all of the big 5, and i honestly did not expect that in the 3 nights we were staying here. James and Sonya were more then helpful with everything.

All our meals were prepared at the highest of standards but were hearty and I loved how the chefs introduced the meals and got to chat with the guests. The Fire Pit and a glass of red under the winter stars was just the most amazing experience.

This is a place I will be visiting again, and suggesting to all my friends.

Room Tip: The Furthest room (#1) is right on the edge of the Hotel Land, so you could really feel like you wer...

We had a wonderful experience at Sausage Tree Safari Camp. Our tent was a wonderful mix of authentic and luxurious! The whole place has a family feel...Jame's woke us up each morning at 5:30 am by hollaring "good morning!" from the path outside our tent. The game drives were amazing and life changing. James is an expert and easily shares his knowledge in both english and french. The food was yummy! Sonya was attentive and kind and warm. I would recommend Sausage Tree to anyone wanting a safari experience.

Stayed for a couple of days prior to a riding safari, recommended by our travel company "In the Saddle". It proved to be a wonderful start to our adventure. Everyone was so welcoming, the food was excellent and the tented accommodation was spacious and comfortable.
Our guide, Liam was brilliant and we had plenty of exciting sightings of elephant, lion and much more.
This is a little gem of a place not to be overlooked.
