“Great wildlife, wonderful atmosphere and great staff”
Reviewed 23 April 2009

We stayed here for 3 nights on our first ever safari and we were extremely happy with our choice. Magic to be in the wild like this and see animals up close, we saw "everything" except Leopard. Great service and food. At the evening meals we ate outside at a fireplace inside a pallisad which was very nice. Giraffes and wilderbeest walking by just outside the lodges and lions roaring throughout the night. The rangers were very good and the tracking of a rhino with a calf was very exciting! We cant wait for our next safari.

This is small, intimate lodge. Its comfortable. The food was good. We saw a lot of lions - plus elephants, water buffalo & rhino. Sadly no leopard, but never mind! The safari drives are in open land rovers. The rangers are very good a finding lions, which we found 3 days in a row.

  • Liked — Wildlife. Evening meals. Intimacy
  • Disliked — No leopards whenwe were there

All I can say is, after a few days at Mohlabetsi, you go home with memories that you will never forget.

All the Big 5, fantastic lion and leopard sightings, and a great buffalo kill... what more could I have wanted?

Great hospitality and great food. The information from the rangers and their trackers was fantastic.

Forget the over-priced lodges, where you will just be another customer, rather go to somewhere where you feel welcomed, and go away with lifetime memories for a fraction of the price...

Thanks and kind regards to all at Mohlabetsi...

Best part of a great holiday... This safari lodge has the rare combination of a wonderful spot on earth and people who give it a good soul and make every aspect of the stay memorable. And the tracking of the Cheetah was first class... Amazing moments!

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights this past April. This was our first time in South Africa and wanted to see the wildlife. We were not disappointed. All of the staff members are wonderful. We especially like Russ and Lucky (and their ability to find the animals and share their knowledge) . Danielle is also very nice and extremely helpful. Tony (the owner) is excellent and very friendly. He was also nice enough to give us an astronomy lesson on our last night. He also provided us directions to our next lodge (9 hours away). I agree with just about everything the last reviewer wrote. The food was excellent, the rooms were clean and comfortable (even the outdoor shower) and the property/gardens are beautiful. This was an unforgettable experience/vacation. I would highly recommend this Lodge to anyone who is interested in visiting South Africa.

  • Liked — Everything especially the game rides
  • Disliked — Lack of food choice for dinner may be a problem for some but not me.

We spent 4 nights at Mohlabetsi and loved every minute. It is a small private game park, with a very intimate atmosphere. The staff was terrific; the rooms in the separate "rondels" were very comfortable and charming; the food was simple but delicious.

We had two game drives each day. We went out in open top LandRovers, which take up to 10 people each. Most days, we had 6 or 7 people in the vehicle. These vehicles can go anywhere through the bush, so you can maneuver around where the animals are.

You never know what you will see; some drives there is a lot of game and on other drives, you see very little game. As a result, it is best to stay at least 3 nights, so you have the best chance to see lions, etc. The staff is excellent at tracking game, and gettintg you into position to see animals up close. We watched two lions feasting on a kill of a young giraffe. We also saw many giraffes, buffalo, wildebeest, wart hogs, impalas and crocodiles. The staff is great at getting you into the best position for photography.

Southern Kruger has a much greater concentration of game, but the private park experience lets you feel more of the "real Africa"--you are in the bush, experiencing the smells and sounds of the animals and birds, as well as seeing them. It is a much different experience than driving through Kruger Park in your car.

After the afternoon game drive, weather and time permitting, the guide takes you on a bush walk, pointing out interesting features of the plant, bird, animal and insect life. This was fascinating and we only wished we could do more of it.

Between the morning and afternoon game drives, it's lovely to relax in the hammock, or sit on a lawn chair and watch the warthogs in front of the resort.

Breakfast is a nice continental breakfast, and in addition, eggs cooked as you wish with bacon and tomatoes. Lunch was light--generally a salad or egg dish. Dinner was cooked outside over an open fire. There was always dessert, often fruit and ice cream. The food overall was excellent.

The only drawback, for some people, would be the lack of choices for dinner. Each night, we had either chicken or wild game. Dinner was delicious, but some people may be unhappy with the lack of options.

The entire staff was friendly, outgoing and helpful. They all seemed to enjoy what they were doing and to be pleased to share it with the guests.

I stayed here in September 2003. I was a solo traveller and spent two nights of luxury. The owners and staff were so friendly informative and made my stay very memorable.

The game drives and walk, food, rondavals were all very good, but to me it was the staff including Pippa the border collie. I was on my own in the whole place for one night of my stay and nothing was to much trouble. I have visited South Africa three times over a twenty year period and this will always be my most memorable experience. Would love to return.
