“Absolutely Magic”
Reviewed 17 September 2013

This place is a gem,

Near Kruger National Park and right in the heart of game viewing country.
The place is run perfectly and nothing is too much of a problem.
The accommodation is in tents with full facilities. They are also constructing some new villas that are more modern but don't have in our opinion the same ambience as the tents.
The guides are top with a huge knowledge of the area and all the animals and flora.
We have stayed 4 days and only wish we had added another couple of days.
Must mention Isaac the guide and Adrian and Kim the Managers, they have made our stay very special.

The accommodation is full board and the food was excellent, They try and accommodate all tastes.

We are sad to be leaving tomorrow .

After being destroyed by flooding, Drifters has been rebuilt into a stunning and modern lodge offering luxurious accommodation, outstanding food and a warm welcome. The main lodge is metal and glass with views over the pool, deck and river (dried up during our visit), and accommodation is either in luxury tents or new glass cabins in the same style as the lodge. We stayed in the tents which were extremely warm and comfortable (fans for when it's warm, electric blankets for when it's not) and which had a novel outdoor shower. We visited in winter and having an outdoor shower overlooking the river really was something special (and not cold at all, with plenty of hot water available). Unfortunately we were only at Drifters for one night (which was a shame as it would have been great to spent a day on the deck watching the wildlife pass by) but we had two outstanding game drives with Isaac (where, amongst other things we saw cheetah and had a number of close up lion sightings) and an extremely interesting bush walk. The food was delicious and El and her team provided a warm, friendly and professional welcome. Drifters is well worth a visit, and I'd recommend staying at least two nights. I'm sorry that we didn't.

We arrived with great anticipation. The main building/reception area is being rebuilt, with no substitute area to replace this
Lots of building noise through the day
We were taken on 4 game drives with a guide who had only just arrived there, No tracker, and saw minimal game during all those game drives. ( one rabbit , a few impala and a giraffe) The guide had a poor command of the English language
There is a main train line running close by and the noise of the train which is constant day and night is only going to get worse over time

Room Tip: If you have to go here get a room overhanging the river

We returned to Drifters after only six months being there previously. We once again had a beautiful time apart from one day. There were some new meals on the menu which we thoroughly enjoyed – my favourite being the Peppermint Stack. As always Drifters was maintained beautifully by housekeeping – thank you to the staff for a lovely clean tent. We spent 6 nights at Drifters and the time spent was wonderful thanks to Fraser, our Guide. There are not enough words to explain how fantastic he is; he always made the game drives fun, enjoyable and informative. Fraser at the beginning asked what was on our wish list for sightings and I know he cannot control what animals you will see but when he knew you saw something on your list he was just as excited as we were. His enthusiasm is contagious. We really enjoyed our day with him in Kruger (even though the weather wasn’t the greatest). We also had the opportunity to go on the Panorama Tour. We would highly recommend this tour (provided you don’t start the day with a flat battery or end it with car trouble). Even with these issues Fraser still made the day memorable. As we were two women he understood the need for us to check out the shops and he would patiently wait for us and even laugh at the amount of “sweets” we would purchase. He never once ever showed annoyance at how long we were taking as some Guides do. Fraser is fun loving, jovial, charismatic, polite, and professional and a great joy to be around. He enjoys his job immensely and this is obvious in his bubbly manner with the guests. We will return to Drifters for Fraser. Fraser we would like to publicly thank you for keeping us safe and providing us with beautiful memories. We look forward to seeing you again.
I mentioned the car trouble and I am pleased to inform you that I feel comfort in knowing future guests will be safe. It was unfortunate the owner Andy Dott did not share our fear with the vehicle issue. His lack of understanding has left us with mixed feelings towards Drifters.
HINT: pack for all types of weather. We experienced rain, heat, humidity, cold, sunshine, wind.

We stayed one night at drifters on the first of a three day trip to the game reserve. This was a great introduction to a safari here in South Africa. The accommodations were tents on platforms above a river bed. The platforms have a roof above to protect against the rain. And at the back of the tent is a real bathroom (with real walls and a roof). The shower was actually open to the outside. Really cool!

The beds were very comfortable and the tents were clean. No insects or bugs. It was great to fall asleep at night so close to nature. Drifters is intimate. There were only about 6 tents. They had more but a freak flood had damaged some so they were being rebuilt. Try get a tent down near the river as you overlook the river bed and you can sometimes see animals there. When we were there, the people in those tents saw two adult and one baby elephant playing below in riverbed.

The couple managing Drifters could not have been nicer and would do whatever they could to make the stay a pleasant one. Dinners are eaten with other guests at a large communal table. Food was lovely and every attempt is made to meet any dietary requirements or preferences.

The two game drives were very enjoyable. Saw lots of animals. The best was a very close set of three white rhinos eating by the riverbed. We ended up within feet of them. Other highlights were giraffe, lots of buck, zebra, hyena, buffalo and elephant. The night before ours they saw leopard and lion.

There was a nice lodge and an area to sit and relax when not out on safari. While there is a small pool, it was not very inviting to me. It looked a bit tired and the dark bottom was not very appealing. But this was a minor issue and does not detract from the place.

I would come back as this is nice small lodge without tons of people. We also stayed at another lodge the next night. It was bigger with more amenities. We are pleased we had an opportunity to stay at both.

We had a wonderful time at Drifters Game Lodge in Oct 2012. The passion of the staff, especially Gavin & Isaac, for what they do, and their and knowledge of the bush and wildlife was inspiring. Also, their abilities to find the Big Five were excellent. We saw game from the first drive in to the Lodge to the last drive out. The setting was beautiful, the meals were delicious, and the wine cellar top class and reasonably priced. Our stay, which included day trips to Kruger and Blyde Canyon, exceeded my expectations and I will recommend Drifters Game Lodge to anyone thinking of doing a safari in your area. The Lodge is very remote, but the attention to detail of the staff made sure that you didn't miss anything essential. And it was good to be out of cellphone range for a few days!!

Room Tip: All the rooms got the morning sun and overlooked the river bed which was nice.

Drifters Lodge & especially the staff there completely exceeded my expectations. So much attention to detail, a great guide in Isaac who always found lots of animals on the game drives, very comfortable accommodation and amazing food, the more remarkable because it really is in the middle of nowhere, - no internet and rarely cell phone coverage.
I don't think there was a question about the birds or animals that Gavin the lodge manager couldn't answer. We went on both the Kruger & Blyde Canyon excursions, - very long days but sooo worth it. The people here work long hours but always seem happy.
Our package was all inclusive except for the drinks which are reasonably priced.
Would go back tomorrow if I could.
