“Fantastic Experience”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We stayed here for two nights in May 2014, and it was a fabulous experience. The staff were great and attentive to your every need. The meals were great and the food plentiful. We did four game drives (you do two each day-if you want). During the day you can chill out by the pool, go to the spa, do a walking safari or visit the animal rehab center.
Our guide John and tracker Magnus were just delightful. My wife had surgery on her spine and we were leery of the off road tracking. John drove with the utmost care, even in the bush, and we found out this was the normal way they track. We've had bumpier rides on our hometown streets.

If comfort and luxury are what you are looking for, then look no further. You will want for nothing and can relax as much as you need to recharge your batteries. It is impossible to get hungry here and if you do then you might have a tapeworm. If you eat every time a meal or snack is served you will be waddling to and from each of your game drives. The food is delicious and served buffet style. Your room will be serviced 2-3 times per day. The spa is reasonably priced and a must if you have the time. There are also several other activities offered during the day such as an elephant interaction, bush walk, and hot air balloon rides. We really enjoyed the bush walk because you get to see many things that you don’t notice while you are in the vehicle during a game drive. You can be as involved as you wish to be.

Still, it is not the amenities that made Kapama stand out. The personal touches are what made our trip special. Rangers pick you up from the airport and will also coordinate a ride for you on the day that you depart. Our Ranger John and tracker Magnum went out of their way to find animals that everyone in our group wanted to see. They were positive and optimistic and never gave up. They’d track them for hours until we finally found them. Game drives never get old—you see something new each time you go out. In the winter it gets chilly at night so be sure to bring a jacket. There are also blankets available in the evhicles. My husband and I were lucky because for our last game drive many people were too tired and didn’t wake up. We got our own private drive. I am not really an animal person but I loved every minute of the game drives. Something about seeing the animals outside of the zoo roaming freely was exciting. This was our first safari so we decided not to rent a car and drive to Kruger on our own. This was a great decision. Had we driven on our own we wouldn’t have really known how to track animals and if we got lucky and found one we might have 15 other cars around too. John and Magnum track animals for a living and showed us way more than we could have found on our own. I know that we will be back sometime in the future. We loved everything and everyone at Kapama. Because of our Ranger, waiter Joel, our housekeeper Florence (who discovered we loved nougat candy and would leave us a couple extra) we were able to have an unforgettable first safari!

Our first trip to South Africa, first safari and the staff at Kapama made it the trip of a lifetime full of memories. The staff was friendly, helpful at every turn and attentive to the smallest of details.

Game drives were the highlight and the experienced trackers were able to locate all of the 'big five' as well as many other animals, birds and plant life. Tons of information made the rides interesting all along the way. They think of everything including blankets because it does cool down at night and early in the morning. A nice kit full of drinks and snacks for the perfect sundowner experience.

The wellness center was very nice as well. Our massage therapist and the peaceful setting made it easy to get lost in bliss. Goodness and Naomi were fantastic!

Get here! You will absolutely call it one of the best trips you could ever take.

Room Tip: We stayed in a regular suite and loved it.

I had a wonderful time here at kapama river lodge, the venue is awesome. There is a stunning Spa facility, and the massages are amazing. We had evening dinners in the bush a distance away from the main venue, and what makes it even more impressive was the "no fence" aspect. - that means, if a lion wants to come visit, but don't worry the rangers and guides look well after you. A little bit of advice, if you guys want a amazing guide during the game drives, ask for john and his spotter "magnum", he really knows the bush. We ended up seeing everything to see except for hyenas. Given the chance again, I would definately do it all over again!! Oh yes, and the staff are really helpful.

An excellent larger lodge with very friendly professional staff. Great and plentiful food. Very high quality accommodation.
The game drives were well organised and (of course) it is the luck of the draw in the ranger and tracker you get, but we got an excellent and friendly team in Jakes and Michael, who made every effort to get us close to the animals in a safe and respectful manner and were very knowledgable..
I can highly recommend Kapama and River Lodge in particular.

This was our third lodge during our trip to Sabi Sand. (First was Dulini, second was Kapama Karula). While this was a lovely, clean and active lodge, it lacks the intimacy if the other two. However, for the price, it was an excellent value.
The staff was friendly and helpful - Peter was our ranger and he was very nice, effective and approachable. Vusi was our waiter and again, very attentive and helpful.
The game drives were very good - we saw 2 prides of lions and 2 adult male lions.
Wifi service leaves a LOT to be desired. I couldn't get wifi in my room and would have to go to the bar / restaurant area to upload, organize, post and send pictures as well as take care of other travel needs.
We did take advantage of the spa. The sports massage was just what we needed after days of bouncing around in the Land Cruisers -
It appears to draw a younger, hipper clientele (and families) which was an interesting change from the other two lodges that were a bit more older in age.
Food was very good - served buffet style but customization was available to fit dietary needs, preferences, etc. All in all, an excellent value for the services and experience.

I cannot speak highly enough of the skilled trekkers and the pleasant and informative drivers. We saw all the animals. I would recommend 4 days minimum, where you go on a total of 8 game drives. Not every drive is successful and as you have seen most of the "big fives" you are obviously most interested in the one you have yet to find. You stay with the same group of people and have your evening meal together with your group and your driver. Meals were excellent. The drivers are in radio contact with each other, so when an animal is spotted they relay the location so everyone can get a chance. They have excellent rules so no one vehicle is monopolizing the location. The vehicles carry blankets and ponchoes in cvase of bad weather. I am a doctor specialising in travel medicine and it would appear to me that the malaria risk is very low in April. We saw no mosquitos and receivced no bites. Insect repellent and sunscreen should be used though. There is a pleasant swimming pool and a wonderful spa
The only thing that I was a little annoyed about was buying a bottle of sunscreen at the spa at a cost of 580 Rand.... that seems a little over the top folks.
My wife and I agreed it was a first class place and an experience of a life time. Thank you to an excellent driver (Chane) and Trekker (Stephen).
